I posted on another thread about the concert last night, but just wanted to share in the pure joy here! Prince was awesome!!! The entire show was incredible, but he took it to another level on "Guitar" and "Purple Rain". My sister said she almost cried while he was playing "Purple Rain". One down and thankfully one more to go for me!! |

I think it’s pretty rare that I sound like a fam around here. I think I’ve earned the right to do it now.
Prince was on fire tonight. I know there are some complaints about the setlist being old. All I can say is…you had to be there. Tonight’s concert is one of the best concerts of his I’ve ever seen, and I honestly do not say that lightly. Below are some random highlights and recollections from me. I hope they do the show justice.
________________________
- I got to hear Prince sing “When We’re Dancing Close and Slow.” This old gem is one of my favorites, and I never thought I’d hear him do it live. As a duet with the incomparable Cassandra Wilson, it was a wonderful treat.
- Prince also came out to perform during Maceo Parker’s set. He ran through some blistering guitar work during “We Gon Make It Funky,” and it was some of the best sounding guitar work I’ve ever heard from him. Prince kept that high standard going the entire evening. There were several times where I found myself thinking that he is indeed a better guitar player now than he ever was before.
- I fell in love with “Little Red Corvette” all over again tonight. I don’t need to be reminded how many times I’ve heard the song before. I honestly have never heard it performed better than tonight. Ever.
- Shelby waved a giant white flag with a blue angel on it during “Purple Rain.” Maybe it was a tribute to her father? I hope so, and if so, I hope the crowd’s singing brought her some comfort and peace.
- I don’t completely understand the Welcome 2 America theme yet, but I love that there is one. Before the show began, such ‘80s songs as “Mutiny” and “Shockadelica” played over the speakers while the 1959 movie Black Orpheus was broadcast (with subtitles) on the big screens. When Prince and his band came out, his backup singers were dressed in flapper style (a very nice touch). I don’t know what it means, or even if it’s supposed to mean anything, but I love it.
- When Prince did “Guitar,” he made me realize just how much fun that song can be. And once again, his guitar playing here was phenomenal. It was also fun to see him do a new trick (at least new to me) with his playing: The gold guitar was hanging from a strap that went over his shoulder, of course, and at one point, he was strutting around the stage while effortlessly playing the guitar, which was positioned behind him (he was walking kind of sideways, with the guitar pushed out behind his back). I don’t know if I’m describing it well, but it was a cool-looking move.
- As the second encore began, the hydraulic lift began to rise and instead of Prince, it was Sheila E. and her timbales coming through the stage. People often say Sheila is looking “better than ever” or something equally clichéd, but there’s almost no other way to describe how incredibly gorgeous she looked. First, she’s incredibly svelte with toned arms. Second, she was dressed in a sexy black-and-white tank top and painted-on black leather pants. Third, and the total piece de resistance, were her super—and I mean SUPER—hot stiletto heels. She looked badass and fierce as she pounded the hell out of the timbales during “The Glamorous Life” and “A Love Bizarre” and her encore solo. (She was wearing a big black wig that was kind of too big for her slight frame, but so what.)
- Prince asked Sheila to stay after her set, and he asked if she’d like the backup singers to fetch her some men to dance for her. Sheila said yes, she’d like that, and the girls obliged by gathering some very fine young men to dance. One in particular was the standout. A guy in a white shirt kept doing the coffee-grinder splits, which the crowd loved.
- Prince’s voice was spot-on throughout the entire show. Even better, his screams were spot-on (meaning they were beautifully pitched and perfectly in key, even when singing “Adore” and “Scandalous” and “Kiss”).
- Prince’s moves were also incredible. He was bursting with energy. It was infectious.
________________________
Okay, that’s my take. I maybe could have done without “Love Thy Will Be Done” and “Eye Love U But Eye Don’t Trust U Anymore,” but then again, those songs have never been favorites of mine. Aside from that, I loved it far more than I was even expecting. And I had high hopes for tonight going in. He just managed to surpass them in every way possible.
Thus ends my fam session.
.

This pains me to say this and I will probaly be labeled "a hater" too but this was the worst Prince show I have seen. I have been to the following shows (Purple Rain 85, Lovesexy 89, Musicology 04, W2A 11).
I'm sorry to be critical as Prince is one of my absolutely favorite artists. I fully expect to be lambasted for my comments but tonights show for me was pretty disappointing. I also took a friend who I having been raving about Prince shows to for years. He appreciates good music and musicianship and was also unimpressed leaving him to continue to wonder what I have seen in Prince for all these years. I couldn't defend against his arguements. I had been hoping he could finally see some of what I loved about Prince but there was little evidence of it for me tonight. It was ok mind you. Maybe even decent but nowhere near great and because it's Prince and because I have both seen/heard great shows both live and on video/bootleg... I expected great. I have seen what felt like great Prince shows in the past and this was not at the level of any of them. The Musicolgy show I saw at the meadowlands in 04 tour was very good. The Lovesexy I saw was also very good.
I still had fun. Prince is still astonishing to watch on the guitar and I still love hearing his voice on the ballads. However so many other things were just plain bad.
In this day and age and with the resources at his disposal there is no way for the sound to have been mixed so poorly and sound so muddy. I saw U2 at Giants stadium last year and the sound was much better in an outdoor stadium about four times the size of the meadowlands arena. There is no way a PRINCE show should sound as bad as this one did. It was extremely muddy and flat.
Also, where the musicians were allowed to shine on the Musicology tour they were were not allowed the same freedom here. John Blackwell is an absolutely amazing drummer but I never would never have known that watching him tonight. He seemed tentayive and unenthused. He was on fire during the Musicology tour. His drumming during SHHHH is one the most incredible live music experiences I have witnessed. He seemed tame tonight and the poor mix drowned out any power he might have otherwise been displaying.
Sheila's drum sound however was great. Her performance was the amazing and her drums were mixed great. She also got the greatest roar of the night from the crowd. Far greater than at any other moment during the show. I think those going to the garden show with Sheila on the bill could possibly get the best show of the bunch.
Finally, Prince just didn't seem to be having as much fun as he seemed to be having at other shows I have seen him at. Maybe it's age (although as we all know: he looks amazing and seems to have more energy and stamina than most people in their 20s) so I don't think that's it. Somehow in the past when he would toy playfully with the audience it seemed cheesy but also genuine. Tonight it was just seemed cheesy. He resorted to what seemed like vegas show perfomance techniques.
I could go on but I don't even know if people are even reading at this point as I realize this is a very negative review. I am hoping I can go to an aftershow during this run of shows see more of what I still love about this man's music. I am very curious what other people's experiences were of this compared to other shows.
Are you reviewing the sound or P's performance? I am sorry you feel the sound was poor but what does that have to do with P's actual performance? |

why do i need 2 attend every show when i just get it on bootleg b4 u even blink? i was there at the garden last night and besides a few good points it wasn't the same prince i grew up hearing and seeing man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81 |

not 2 mention going 2 paisley park in 2000 and 2002 for 7 nights ..yet i'm a hater LOL wow!!
You may have gone to a lot of shows, but the majority of the people at these concerts havent'.
Just because you're bored after going to shows for 25, plus listening to every bootleg in between.
You're just too familiar, and you don't have the excitment anymore. That's not Prince's fault.
If you married Halle Berry and had slept with her every night for 20 years, you'd probably be bored too.
i have gone 2 my fair share of shows yes but not like what i read from other people who post on this site..just read where someone has seen him 76 times ..wow!!
i just belive in music always propelling forward and prince is one of those artists that pushed the ball moving now it seems like he's stuck in some nostalgia act that has nothing left 2 say but it's hard 2 fathom that from someone of his musical legacy.
and as 4 the halle berry comment ..i guess david justice got tired too with any relationship u gotta keep spicing it up 2 sustain man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81 |

I've been to many shows myself, and I guess after awhile you're going to have your share of the best and not so best. For me, life is too short and I'm just coasting along and happy that the man is still alive, still got it and still doing shows (MJ fans will never have that opportunity. I know that sounds morbid but just to put things in perspective...) I'm just saying, I choose to enjoy the moment of one of the very few legends left that can put on a show. That doesn't mean you can't have your preferences, but after Friday's wonderful experience, I'm not going to be too picky on the setlist. It's about a having a great time while it last...... I have been to right around 80 shows from 84 to 09, private to arena. I don't understand the argument that "Prince has to do the hits". I know he's been doing these hit shows since 97, but prior to that we got new songs with a mix of hits. Now we are lucky to get ANY new songs! I'd still go and see a show again, but knowing that it's going to be hits, hits, hits. I guess he just doesn't have the confidence in the new material as he did in the long ago past. TRUE BLUE |

Maybe the answer is to do a series of arena shows like he is playing his hits and, between them to do a couple of shows in smaller venues and advertise that these will be no hits, just new music and less-known music from his back catalogue. (and, of course, somehow make those tickets available to all of us on the org first!!!!)

i'm so down 4 that type of show with no hits and no covers just his music and the classics that his fans adore that weren't in the top 20 of billboard. the smaller venue concept would be nice but a arena show would be fine as well. man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81 |

For a non-hits/no covers show he would have to do it in a smaller venue because most likely he would not sell-out an arena. The idea would be a good one, but I have a scary feeling that this is it, so enjoy it while you can. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!

This show was cool too! Alot more people were there, so it was harder to dance. The folks in my section were super boring and sat down almost the entire. Didn't bother me though, cause I stood up and danced the entire show!! Making folks super mad, but oh well, that's what you do at a Prince concert, jam!! I thought the setlist wasn't as much fun as the 15th show, but still very fun. I REALLY enjoyed the guitar solos Prince did. I was totally in awe at this show with Prince just popping up on stage with Cassandra and Maceo! WOW, he looked gorgeous though..these outfits were really great, especially that first one.
Again, my $20.10 seats got upgraded to $179 seats for free!!! It really pays off to dance your butt off and really represent Prince. I know everyone working there remembers me! Really pays off, and worked well in my favor this time around!! Sheila popping up was super cool, and Maceo rocked the house. Prince was amazing, especially when he came out for the encores and kept the lights on. That was really, really fun!! And he was super hot in those sunglasses and gold outfit. I kept trying to pump the people up in my section to get up and scream so he comes back!! Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol |
