Great report Efan, thanks! You painted a nice picture of what it was like.

I really want to see the Beautiful Ones with the ballerina!

Saw the Black muse, thanks for the tip, whoever it was biggrin

Thanks! This show might be in my top three, right after Lovesexy and the Hotel Gansevoort show--it was that good.

I was surprised we didn't get "Pass the Peas" with Maceo being there and the fact that Maceo didn't do it in his set.

I also thought that we might hear "Get on the Boat" with both Shiela and Maceo with his horn section there. Maybe tonight. That song is great live, especially with all the horns .

Prince was on fire tonight. I know there are some complaints about the setlist being old. All I can say is…you had to be there. Tonight’s concert is one of the best concerts of his I’ve ever seen, and I honestly do not say that lightly. Below are some random highlights and recollections from me. I hope they do the show justice.

________________________

  • I got to hear Prince sing “When We’re Dancing Close and Slow.” This old gem is one of my favorites, and I never thought I’d hear him do it live. As a duet with the incomparable Cassandra Wilson, it was a wonderful treat.
  • Prince also came out to perform during Maceo Parker’s set. He ran through some blistering guitar work during “We Gon Make It Funky,” and it was some of the best sounding guitar work I’ve ever heard from him. Prince kept that high standard going the entire evening. There were several times where I found myself thinking that he is indeed a better guitar player now than he ever was before.
  • I fell in love with “Little Red Corvette” all over again tonight. I don’t need to be reminded how many times I’ve heard the song before. I honestly have never heard it performed better than tonight. Ever.
  • Shelby waved a giant white flag with a blue angel on it during “Purple Rain.” Maybe it was a tribute to her father? I hope so, and if so, I hope the crowd’s singing brought her some comfort and peace.
  • I don’t completely understand the Welcome 2 America theme yet, but I love that there is one. Before the show began, such ‘80s songs as “Mutiny” and “Shockadelica” played over the speakers while the 1959 movie Black Orpheus was broadcast (with subtitles) on the big screens. When Prince and his band came out, his backup singers were dressed in flapper style (a very nice touch). I don’t know what it means, or even if it’s supposed to mean anything, but I love it.
  • When Prince did “Guitar,” he made me realize just how much fun that song can be. And once again, his guitar playing here was phenomenal. It was also fun to see him do a new trick (at least new to me) with his playing: The gold guitar was hanging from a strap that went over his shoulder, of course, and at one point, he was strutting around the stage while effortlessly playing the guitar, which was positioned behind him (he was walking kind of sideways, with the guitar pushed out behind his back). I don’t know if I’m describing it well, but it was a cool-looking move.
  • As the second encore began, the hydraulic lift began to rise and instead of Prince, it was Sheila E. and her timbales coming through the stage. People often say Sheila is looking “better than ever” or something equally clichéd, but there’s almost no other way to describe how incredibly gorgeous she looked. First, she’s incredibly svelte with toned arms. Second, she was dressed in a sexy black-and-white tank top and painted-on black leather pants. Third, and the total piece de resistance, were her super—and I mean SUPER—hot stiletto heels. She looked badass and fierce as she pounded the hell out of the timbales during “The Glamorous Life” and “A Love Bizarre” and her encore solo. (She was wearing a big black wig that was kind of too big for her slight frame, but so what.)
  • Prince asked Sheila to stay after her set, and he asked if she’d like the backup singers to fetch her some men to dance for her. Sheila said yes, she’d like that, and the girls obliged by gathering some very fine young men to dance. One in particular was the standout. A guy in a white shirt kept doing the coffee-grinder splits, which the crowd loved.
  • Prince’s voice was spot-on throughout the entire show. Even better, his screams were spot-on (meaning they were beautifully pitched and perfectly in key, even when singing “Adore” and “Scandalous” and “Kiss”).
  • Prince’s moves were also incredible. He was bursting with energy. It was infectious.

________________________

Okay, that’s my take. I maybe could have done without “Love Thy Will Be Done” and “Eye Love U But Eye Don’t Trust U Anymore,” but then again, those songs have never been favorites of mine. Aside from that, I loved it far more than I was even expecting. And I had high hopes for tonight going in. He just managed to surpass them in every way possible.

Thus ends my fam session. biggrin

Agree with all this... except I love "Eye Love U..." and I'd rather hear the vocalists do a Prince song "Love Thy Will..." than "In the Arms of an Angel."

Other highlights for me continue to be this arrangement of Kiss and the dance break down.

Doing the last encore after the band had left the staging area completely and while the house lights were on, made it seem impromptu and a real treat for those of us who stuck around. It gave it a "this wasn't supposed to happen" kind of feel.

His voice, his guitar playing, and his moves are in tip top shape. This is a great show and I can't wait to see what happens tonight!

The energy last night was incredible! He had more time and stretched out some of the songs, esp Purple Rain bringing new notes into the solo... Wasn't Milan but just is inventive and fresh. Kiss continues to be a strong point--the arrangement is much more loyal to the studio version than other renditions in the past, and his dance breakdown is awesome. Time is clearly a trick cuz at 52 homeboy still can move!

Of course Sheila was a huge treat and surprise! The screams almost blew the roof off... they are true musical soulmates and have great chemistry on stage.

Doing the duets with the "opening acts" during their performances allowed greater time for him... there were no covers other than "Le Freak" during the Controversy mashup. (In stead of "Arms of an Angel" we got "Love Thy Will Be Done"--a great nod to his writing/production catalogue).

"Eye Love U..." with Maceo was exquisite... and once again his falsetto is in tip top shape.... and so are his screams as heard during "The Beautiful Ones."

The final encore... with the band returning after they had left the stage area completely and with the house lights on, gave it an impromptu and special feel. Great move! To those newbies, just remember "It Ain't Ovah!" Don't leave too early otherwise you may miss something.

He was in a great mood last night and it wasn't even sold out and still had sound problems... can only imagine the energy Saturday night at the sold out Madison Square Garden... All the Critics Love U in NY and you're gonna see why! #Welcome2America

Last night's show was incredible. I've been to all of Prince's concerts from DC to NY and this show was truly one of the greatests ever. It was like Prince was in my car listening to me program a set list in my head and he delivered.........and the bonus.........Sheila E.

Many people left when the lights came on and they are probably kicking themselves because an encore of Insatiable/Scandalous and Adore was truly one of the highlights of the show. I wish my videos were clearer. I spent too much time playing hide and seek after they made me put my camera away. I knew from the last few tours not to get floor seats but I got them anyway (section 7 rocked). When he announces Philly dates, I will get sets off of the floor so that I can see the entire stage

I don't care for 1 nite stands with trolley cars that juggle 17!

Last night's show was incredible!!!!!!!! worship Yes- the sound at the Izod generally sucks- but that is always the case-IMO Prince's sound people did a better job than most. And it really didn't matter as the show was that good. The version of Little Red Corvette was AMAZING! And Sheila!!!! I literally almost peed myself...she looked wonderful, played incredible and it was SO great to see them together.

I'm coming off a long rough patch in life and have to say I was happier last night than I have been in a really long, long time. (maybe since I last saw him in Vegas almost 4 years ago!) Thank you Prince!!!! touched Wish I was going to MSG tonight...hmm maybe a trip into NYC to track down an aftershow is in order....nod
