Ohh Abu Dhabi

"Ohh Abu Dhabi" was the chant everybody was yelling on the buses on route back to the cars.

I've been seeing Prince live since the 90s. My first concert was in London during the Naked tour; around the Graffiti Bridge era. I last saw him at the o2 arena during his 21 night stint in London.

Prince rocked Abu Dhabi. He came on at 9.30pm and, after two encores and three outfits, left the stage at 11.45pm. He started with a black suit with a red stripe. Changed into a purple number and then a balck and white outfit with some pretty cool trainer heels. Only he could pull them off!

He opened up with Let's Go Crazy which blended into controversy and little red corvette, which was sung extremely slowly with substantial involvement with the crowd. Then Mr Nelson came up with the ohh Abu Dhabi chant. He had 30,000 people chanting it. I wonder if he thought of it on the plane down to Abu Dhabi!

He had Lewis Hamilton and his famous pussy cat girlfriend, join him on stage, together with around 20 other people who were not hand picked, which if often not the case in previous concerts.

He also sang Raspberry Beret and Shhh. Other hits included "U got the look" and "Nothing compares 2 u". The covers included "Freak out". He did a particularly touching version of "Love thy will be done". Near the end he sang "Sometimes it snows in April" and "Peach". He also covered the hugely popular "love bazaar", which was originally written by Sheila e.

Prior to Prince being announced, I wasn't sure how the crowd would react to him. Not many people here know his music well. The UAE has a majority population of expats. Less than 20% are nationals.

The evening was great and be once again proved to everyone that there is nobody like him currently around, who has the ability to hold an audience for over 2 hours even though the majority of people didn't know his songs. That's special!

According to Princevault.com Nicole Scherzinger joined him on stage and sang.

Can any one confirm/report?

Have a look at 'The W2A: Euro Tour Song Survey' http://prince.org/msg/12/362417

Hiya, just got home from the Abu Dhabi gig. Official audience count was 30,000. Yes Nicole was there, and came on stage during P's second encore after he invited some of the audience on stage. She was there as her BF Lewis Hamilton was competing in the Grand Prix (and joined her briefly on stage). She joined P (I think it was adhoc rather than planned) during Love Bizarre and she didn't know the lyrics. We noticed an autocue appeared and she was fine after that. How about The Time's "The Bird" and "Jungle Love" for an encore? The final encore was "Sometime it snows" followed by a track I didn't recognise (a cover?), followed by "Baby I'm a Star" with foil confetti falling from the roof? The first song was "Let's Go Crazy" followed by "Delirious". After that it was a bit of a blur but "Purple Rain" and "Controversy" went down a storm. And there was "Delirious". And "Kiss" was the first encore. He was mad keen on playing guitar tonight.

One result for me was my wife of 11 years decided to join me, her first Prince gig ever. Classic comments were: to Kiss - "I recognise that song", and Nothing Compares - "I didn't know that was his song"! She has had no interest in P since I've known her and I've been a fan since the first album I bought which is 1999. She really enjoyed it and I am now going to ask her to join me in NY to see him at MSG.

That's all I can muster right now, I'm beat, it's 3am and time for bed!

Thanks very much for the report - good to hear how the show went. One little correction - Prince wrote a "A Love Bizarre" for Sheila E.

Impressive summary, I was just trying to put it together myself and I must admit I missed Jungle Love and Baby I'm a Star.

But there was one other song before Nothing Compares which only the background singers sang. Did not recognize that, any ideas??
