don't festivals tend to bring out a more eclectic set list from Prince? don't recall Coachella but it seems it was a few rarities in there in addition to the surprise Creep cover

Hi Tremolina wink

Its by no means certain that he doesn't have the money. You, no doubt, know full well that large coporations or entities with vast sums of money to pay will often hold out until the very last before they actually settle. Why? Because they earn money by holding it back. If Prince owes a cumulative amount of, lets say for example $5million, then just holding on to that for a few months will accrue a serious amount of interest. Its a basic tactic used by everyone. Even people who owe small amounts (regular bills) might hold off payment until it suits them - not necessarily to make money in their case, but just because they might need to prioritise their cashflow.

Prince might be skint (highly unlikely - royalties alone will be rolling in regularly) but he might not be - none of us have any proof and just because he is holding off paying some bills is not proof of anything.

There is no way Prince would be able to offer discounted tickets to a festival - those ticket prices are beyond his control. His own gigs are a different matter, but with a festival your not just paying for one act.

How annoying! They know, but they want us to buy tickets for the entire festival rather than that one day. They're evil, I tell ya. EVIL! biggrin

Well, perhaps not. Most festivals would rather that people don't come just to see one act, but come because they want to enjoy the festival.

Its precisely why Glastonbury stopped releasing the lineup until all the tickets had sold out - they wanted people to come who genuinely wanted to come and enjoy the whole festival experience, not just come for one act. That was a brave move....but, people still bought tickets regardless and they still sold out quickly (2008 being an exception), because people just wanted to go to Glastonbury, no matter who was playing. Let's face it, if you can't find some music you like with over 1000 acts playing in a weekend, there must be something wrong!

So the reports in Norway are that he'll do a greatest hits set at Roskilde to cater to the not-hardcore people attending the festival... not sure if I'm going, not much for muddy festivals. But a aftershow in copenhagen would be great smile

I went to Werchter last year. It's very well organised and a piece of piss to get to (Eurostar to Brussels and then you catch a local train which is included in the ticket price).

I stayed in one of the furthest away campsites near the town, which was quite good coz you could buy food and booze in the local supermarket etc. Toilets and showers were pretty good, but all the beers are sold on a token basis, so you have to queue up to buy your tokens which you then exchange for beers in a different tent, which is a pain in the arse.

Only two main stages so it does get busy, but I found the crowd fairly subdued. Didn't see any fights or anyone kicking off which is always a good thing. Saw some pretty big bands (The Prodigy, Coldplay, The Killers, Black Eyed Peas, Oasis etc.) and it's not too hard to get to the front if you plan a bit ahead.

Attention here PEOPLE : Prince is NOT playing at the Werchter FESTIVAL. He's playing the same festival area on his own, the weekend AFTER the festival. Had to clarify this.

i've been to the rock werchter festival a few times and the grounds are
pretty ok.

don't know if the prince gig, which is, what, 6 days after the main RW
festival, will be at the exact same spot. if it had been raining that
week, during the festival, the grounds would basically be pretty much
a mudpit.

but since it's july, we've usually got good weather over there so it's
probably gonna be alright.

prince is probably gonna bring his own stuff along but as far as gigs
on the werchter festival go, i've never had any trouble watching or
hearing anything, wether i was halfway to the back of the field or at
a few yards from the stage.

sun never bothered me watching either. and i guess prince will be on
at night, just after sundown since mint condition and larry graham
will be there as supporting acts.

not completely convinced if i'll go or not. yet. it's about 2 hours
drive from where i live so the distance isn't too bad but i never
feel like driving all the way home after such a late night gig. so
i'll see if i can book a hotel.

my only real fear is for another setlist of only hits. if i knew he
would play 75% 'new' material compared to the average hits show, i'd
snatch up some tickets for sure.

Oh but I was just joking about 2.95 million being "pocket change".

There is further no need to make any excuses for the man. He is more than 2 years late with paying, told "the cat to chill we'll work something out" but had it come to a court case, then settled it when the ground became too hot to walk on and then, as usual, again didn't live up to his promises.

Very stylish.

I'm with IstenSzek. The initial euphoria of hearing of a new show has worn off, and I'm giving some serious thought to whether I'm willing to fork over $100 for "go go go, go go go". If there isn't some new material, I may pass.

the problem is tho, you can never know before if he's gonna do something
totally great.

but i can't see that happening. at least not something totally new and
unexpected. a few changes in the 'regular' setlist, is my guess. he's
been doing that a lot last few years.

so it could just as well be a great show.

but a part of me is screaming "this is just like the website. already
there are reports that he will play a 3.30 hour set at roskilde and it
just sound a bit too much like the lotusflower marketing"

prince has turned me from a fun loving person into a paranoid bastard lol

what to do, what to do. i have 1 more day to think about it. hmmm

Yeah, it's a real dilemma. Part of me thinks he'll rock it hard in Belgium because that festival will have just ended with some pretty damn good acts. But then again, Larry Graham is there.....is he part of the band; will there be more preaching and less funk, rock, soul jammin'? Nobody knows. I'm gonna try to make up my mind in the next 24 hours. I'd love to hear a bunch of B-Sides and unreleased material (been hoping for a "B-Sides & Bootlegs Tour" for quite some time).

We'll see, because the days of paying $100 for LRC and WDC are over.

I suppose it'll depend on what band he's got with him. He seems kind of stuck on a certain type of show/setlist when the Dunhams are his backing band.

exactly. but since these are pretty large gigs, at least i figure they
will be judging from the terrains, i'm thinking he can't pull off some
weird bsides concert. and he wouldn't even do that for just hardcores,
at any rate.

so it's gonna be the same ol' hits, spiced up with some hardcore fan
favorites and one or two surprises.

it seems like larry graham and mint condition are just support acts,
at least for now.

i went to see prince in the netherlands in august 1998 and larry was
there was well. but irrc correct, the concert ticket stated that it
was "prince and special guest larry graham". not support act, but a
'special guest'. in which capacity graham took up nearly a quarter
of the actual concert.

anyway, there just isn't any way of knowing. but i'm already leaning
toward $ 100,- in pocket, incl hotel and travelling amounting to $ 250.-
i think i'll just wait for the bootleg
