Prince should be on one of the panels. He can sit next to Farrakhan...lol

As soon as Prince mentions he doesn't vote, he will be booed like a bitch..lol

Now that would be classic if Farrakhan and Prince were on the panel and Farrakhan(dressed like Steve Urkel) broke into his "How Real Men Dress! Prince and Rick James dress like homos rant!" bawhawhawawwwww biggrin

it's interesting how some posters keep mentioning Farrakhan, when it has not been confirmed that he will be there.

so, the question is raised...what is the intention of these people, seeing that this mentioning is not posed as seriousness at all...rather, the posting of and reference to Farrakhan's name, by linking it to Prince in an immature fashion, demonstrates immaturity to say the least, as all of us are left hanging.

then again, i ask these people, because this event is linked to African-Americans, does it prick your conscience slightly, or does it disturb you in the slightest way? only U know...lololol.

rather than judge, let me add my voice and say good for Prince for being involved in this event...no matter what any one says.

These were the details I last heard:

PRINCE CONCERT
The FORUM
3900 W. Manchester Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90305
TIME: 8:00 P.M. to 10:00 P. M.
Tickets: $TBD

Not surprising that Prince will support his friend Tavis... but interesting since the State of the Black Union events usually focus on politics and public policy, neither of which line up with Prince's recent apolitical stances.
[Edited 2/24/09 19:32pm]

How is this going 2 b @ the forum this Saturday and tickets not on sale yet?
The Forum is huge...They expect 2 sale tickets that fast?

I don't know what the plan is for the general public... the info on the concert that I posted was sent out to prospective attendees of the State of the Black Union events.

The SOBU day-time affair is usually very well attended, and this is the 10th year anniversary so one can expect high(er) attendance.... If those same numbers go to the concert then filling the venue would probably not be an issue.

i've gone to these events. always very inspirational on a personal level. i give props to Tavis for using his platform to pull together some of Black America's best thinkers for ongoing critical dialogue. despite his JW beliefs i do think Prince is intelligent and well intentioned. He'll probably observe quietly in the back somewhere. What songs do yall think he'll play at the benefit? Some sober and political choices like....

Money Don't Matter 2Night
Dear Mr. Man (revamp some lyrics perhaps to not sound so pessimistic?)
Live 4 Love
Resolution
Planet Earth
Cinnamon Girl
Free
Family Name
Colonized Mind

That's a nice little set list actually.

How about America?

Well, people don't realize that ones politics need not begin and end at the ballot box. Everything about our lives, what we chose to do and not do, consume and not consume, feed into and not feed into are political decisions. Just because someone doesn't engage in the politics the politicians want you to participate in doesn't mean one isn't political.
Change it one more time..

Before u call someone a hypocrite, take a good long look in the mirror first.
What in the frick r u talking about??...Get the facts before u go and post something hateful about someone y don't u!
Don't automatically ASSume he's getting PAID for this BENEFIT concert, He is Friends with tavis maybe hes doing it as a favor to him!??!
As far as his God..incase u have'nt heard His name is Jehovah, get it right.
And stop being so angry, You'll live longer.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Here's a link to the very informative New Yorker article about Smiley from August 2008. That was the first mention of Prince performing at the event but knowing how unpredictable he can be, I didn't mention it at the time I read about it. The Prince mention is about halfway down.

I attended in 2004. It was interesting for what it's worth and I would recommend that people attend at least one of his symposiums, but Tavis' events tend to be a lot of preaching to the choir and mostly target those who are already aware and upwardly mobile. There's not much outreach by him personally toward people in the inner city or at risk youth, for example, athough he does sometimes encourage attendees to get involved on that level.

I fell out with him last year when he went "diva" on Obama. neutral

The symposium usually goes from 9-5 and is televised on Cspan every year. I was told that the benefit show will be at 8pm the same night, Feb. 28th. It won't be on TV so I hope you get to go.

Last year I missed it on CSPAN. I believe I caught the very end of it. But I intend to watch the seminar on CSPAN this Saturday. Dr. Cornell West and Eric Dyson are two of my favorite speakers.

ME TOO. I love Cornell West, especially. I could listen to him talk for days, and I'm sure he could do it too. I've just been studying Dyson recently for an essay I'm writing for school. He's pretty tight, but I'm just getting familiar with him.

I Have to agree with you. Dyson has a tendency to speak very fast and throws in a little rhyme every now and then, to get his point across. Kind of like what Jesse used to do when he was younger.

True, electoral politics aren't the only kind of politics. However, Prince's brand of politics--of late--are really advocate complete separation and disengagement from the politics of the secular/state while dressed in dissent and dissatisfaction. He "sounds" political by offering sharp criticisms of the failures of the state in providing social justice, but his solutions are not to engage or transform the state, but to completely separate from it into "God's Kingdom." In that way, he actually would have a lot more in common with a Farrakhan than the surface seems to suggest.

But this is off topic lol
