man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

This Farrakhan-bashing thing is tired. Yes, Farrakhan criticized P on his representation of masculinity back in the day... but that was some time in the 80s... people grow and evolve. Both Farrakhan and Prince have. Prince himself has abandoned some of his earlier work due to his own changes... In the late 90s Prince is quoted as saying he admired some of what Farrakhan had to say, and even had Farrakhan's men provide security at events... in 1995, there's a backstory that suggests that "We March" was inspired by the mobilization for the Million Man March led by Farrakhan... in 2000 Prince contributed to the Million Family March, for which Farrakhan thanked him... then Prince's website the NPG Online LTD quoted some of Farrakhan's speech (about a open book being like wings that fly) and that same idea reappears in "The Rainbow Children" ("fly upon the wings of the New Translation").

So please stop with the tired Prince vs. Farrakhan thing, because most of you apparently have not really really paid attention to what either party in this have had to say recently.

Finally, don't get your panties in a bunch about Prince and Farrakhan breathing the same air Saturday night... Farrakhan is speaking in Chicago at his national conference Sunday. While that doesn't preclude him from joining Tavis Smiley as he as often done (to overwhelming applause and support from Smiley's audience), it is unlikely that he'll be staying for a concert if he does attend the SOBU.

clapping Thank you NuPwrSoul! The Realms of this board kill me with the way they so freely spread misinformation and misunderstanding. It is rooted in fear and ignorance. I have also noticed that some folks on this board get really nervous when they are reminded that Prince is a black man. So his association with groups and events that focus on the state of the black community in this country and the world really makes them uncomfortable so that start talking stupid! Let him start telling the truth about our history and he becomes a racist. rolleyes

I remember the italian kids in school would argue. No he is only half-black..umm he is italian!!! And some how exclude themselves from being white or black. Strange days!

The funniest thing is, my cousin was born in '84 he grew up and was into Michael Jackson music. He only known about the early 90's MJ music and we were talking about music and I was telling him Prince music was awesome!!! He mentioned liking Michael Jackson saying how he liked "her" music. Well, on that day I schooled him on Michael Jackson being not only black!! but also about MJ being a MAN!!!

I had to go to the Conga Room today (and last week) for unrelated business...it's small, so any seat wi;; be a good seat. most of the place is a dance floor with bars on the side and back. not too many places to sit.

I would bet he was there on Tuesday watching Esperanza Spalding's show...

Prince just got a shout out on Tavis Smiley's SOBU... According to Smiley, Prince watches the symposium every year and calls Smiley right after for "hours" of conversation.

I am watching CSPan with Tavis Smiley at the SOBU and he just gave props to Prince, and announced that Prince will be performing later in the evening, after the symposium. Tavis also mentioned how Prince is a very good friend of his, and how he and Prince stay in touch all the time. and how Prince has always showed concern for the SOBU symposiums.

lol I guess you beat me to it, as I am watching the program as well, and yes, the audience gave out a big yell and applause when Tavis mentioned Prince. I'm taking a lists of the books that Tavis is mentioning throughout the program.
[Edited 2/28/09 8:31am]

Prince was the very first person Tavis acknowleged and I don't doubt for a moment that Prince watches each symposium because I've always heard that he has a keen interest in news and current affairs. Him performing the benefit show allows him to participate and support his friend on a level that he's comfortable with.

I"m cool with that and I'm sure Tavis is thrilled. cool
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Yes, Tavis was very proud when he announced Prince as his friend, as well as,
someone who has shown concern for the SOBU in the past.

You can watch the SOBU conference online or live on the CSPAN cable channel.

What part of "benefit" do some of you not understand? Let me help:

The purpose of a benefit is to raise as much money for a cause as possible. That's why ticket prices are higher. Hell, that's the whole goal, and as long as the benefitted cause is a worthy one, that's the way it should be.

For those "interested": The SOBU is now breaking for intermission. They will return for the "Second Session" this afternoon.. They return at 1:30pm Pacific time, and 4:30pm EST time on CSPAN.

Panel number two will included Dr. Cornell West, (can't wait to hear what he has to say), Dr. Akhbar, Danny Bakewell, LA Sentinel, Lonnie Guinere(sp?), Karen Bass, and...Michael Steele (cough), Erica Williams, Dr. Emily Towns, Van Jones, Dr. Julianne Malveaux, Randall Robinson, and more.

Tavis just announced they found some extra seats (VIP), for the benefit concert this evening. Looks like it will be a packed house tonight. I can imagine how packed it will be tonight at the benefit concert. Prince is going to shake the roof off the Conga room tonight.
