I have goosebumps reading all these.

When we walked out of the aftershow, high on the music and life and so forth, I was not prepared for the mounted police and the standing police! There was nary a person on the street, just the police!

I concur with Carrie, his little speech seemed heartfelt, he said it in his 'normal' voice, not deep and sexy, he appeared bummed.

I've started calling Larry Graham, The Larry. We hear and see The Larry quite a bit. It all takes away from the glorious spectacle of Prince. Yes he invented slap bass, where would the entire world including the Amazonians who make clicking noises to speak be without The Larry?

People lost it when Wendy came out. She fits Prince so well, I am grateful they are reconnecting, she adds so much to the experience, its almost as if she has his back and he can relax a bit, I dunno.

Also, this is for the stinky people at the Aftershow, couldn't you of splashed some 3121 on yourself? We saw a grandma at Macy's say she LOVED 3121. Hahaha.

I went back to the hotel after the Target show and took a shower!

Standing in 101 temperatures for 5 hours (or longer) then being in a capacity crowd?

Were we at a Grateful Dead show or a Prince show??

I was just telling my driving companions that Prince fans are like Grateful Deads fans, following P. around, but with soap and style.

Here's what Prince was supposed to play before the Police stopped the First Ave. Show:

“We’re at First Avenue,” Prince said as he strummed the beginning of “Controversy’ “We gotta do it.”

Shortly after he sang “wish there were no rules,” Prince caved into the rules. “The authorities say we gotta go,” he said 70 minutes into his late, late set that started at 2:45 a.m. Sunday.”We always listen to the authorities. I promise I’ll be back.”

He was 15 songs into a planned 24-tune set. Here’s what he played — and didn’t get to play.

1. 3121 2. Girls & Boys 3. Feel 4 U 4. Controversy 5. blues song about a cockeyed woman who asks for pepper but looks at the salt 6. Satisfied 7. Down by the Riverside (instrumental featuring horn section) 8. Broken Heart Again 9. Love Is a Losing Game (Amy Winehouse tune sung by Shelby J) 10. Love Changes (Mother’s Finest tune, by Shelby again) 11. Thank You (the Sly Stone classic w/ Larry Graham on bass) 12. Hair (a Chaka Khan/Larry Graham oldie) 13. Sing a Simple Song (more Sly) 14. Everyday People (you know it’s Sly) 15. Alphabet Street

At this point, Prince and the band exited, and everyone expected an encore — except all we got was Prince’s speech about the authorities.

Here’s what was still left on the set list:

16. Baby Love 17. The Dance 18. Let’s Go 19. Anotherloverholeinyourhead 20. The Question of U 21. Peach 22. Lolita 23. Black Sweat 24. Kiss

What did you think of the late, late show? Please post your opinion here:

who says Prince does not have a sense of humor????
where does he come up with songs like that?...at the Musicology show in Madison Square Garden, he played a blues song about a girl eating potato chips, saying she ate the spicy ones, and he had the other kind...or something like that..

I know bro, my head is still in the clouds. I've never heard him rip Controversy like that before and his voice on Gotta Broken Heart was so flawless and beautiful it gave me chills. Loved the extended 3121 just as much.

He did so many wonderful things at that aftershow that I'm not gonna worry too much about what he didn't do.

his voice was ON FIYAH at the aftershow, and what he was wearing...oh my GOD...he looked every bit the badass rock star again. drool

It was one intense and overwhleming day. But dizamn. Controversy, Broken Heart and Girls and Boys at the Ave. FINALLY seeing Prince on the stage in the club I've grown up at. Watching Wendy and Sheila hammmm it up while Larry was rocking out. DAMN, I'm tearing up just TRYING to find words to express how hard it all hit me. AMAZING. LG, Shiela, Wendy, Reneto,Mike, Greg & entire band Rocked! My review is on HQ-Sorry! Too tired to re-write & don't know how to transfer it?? The shut-down at 1st Ave was as painful for Prince as us-as I could see it in his face! but he promised to be back! God-willing many of us will too!

Peace & Love!

That's mean and untrue. I felt a lot of love going out to LG both when he passed us in the Macy's line and onstage in First Avenue.

haha, that's not what i heard. what i heard was that the people on Larry's side when he came out were kinda like "oh boy. neutral" and the people that were on the side with Wendy and saw her first were going crazy. lol

Raze, I agree. As someone who was actually there on the Larry side, I can state unequivocally that that is untrue. I was surrounded by many people who showed nothing but love for Larry. We were singing along to all the songs they sang - Hair, Everyday People, and Thank You...

As a bass player, I was especially in heaven seeing the man who inspired me to play my instrument jamming the bass line to Hair. Also, at Macy's the crowd cheered when he walked by, so I don't know what these people are talking about. Don't project the feelings of some on everyone. If you don't dig Larry's music that's cool. However, I am so tired of these lame attacks on the man. He is a living legend, an innovator on the bass guitar! As I walked out a guy started talking to me about how incredible it was to see Larry playing. On the plane home two guys who missed the First Ave showed were most upset about missing Larry Graham when I told them that he was there. People who appreciate his contributions to music, respect the man and his talent.

Also, Larry (whether credited or not) was responsible for a LOT of Sly's music. Don't get it twisted. Sly is amazing, but he didn't do it alone. Much of the music and lyrics of Sly came from Larry as well. So, please give the man his due.

I must agree.... he was so sexy and sooo sweet with the apology! i could barely see him, but was very fortunate to get in. I was about 15 people back when they ran out of tickets for the afterparty. Luckily... there is a God and about 25 or so of us were able to get in after everyone else was in and the fire marshall or whoever said there was room for us who had waited. The screwup came at Macy's when they said..."U can't leave or your red wristband doesn't mean anything and u will have to go to the back of the line if not here at 3pm." And the fact they said there would be plenty of tickets....NOT. Having seen 3 Prince concerts in one day in MN is going to be one of those things I smile about when I am 99 yrs old sitting in my rocker reflecting on my life. TY Prince for an awesome 07/07/07!!!!! Not to happen again for 100 yrs! Hope 2 c u there!!!

Too bad they just didn't let this slide and let prince finish his show.
There was no harm done. Noone got hurt.

The police should have been spending their time on more important issues like drunk drivers or saving someone from domestic violence. No, they had to shut Prince's show down.Too bad I know there are rules, but that's the thanks Prince gets after this event brought a lot of revenue into the city?

Thank you...

And while it's a lost cause attempting to explain anything to anyone who uses the term "naysayer," no, there's nothing mean or untrue about it. It's now 10 years since Larry Graham first started joining Prince onstage in his silly white suit and most people were as sick of it then as they are now. No new songs (except for the blip on the radar known as the drivel of GCS2000). He's not even performing his own songs - playing "Everyday People" and other Sly tracks makes him little more than a glorified cover band. It's little different than if the sax player from Huey Lewis & the News toured without Huey Lewis and played "The Power of Love." Nobody wants to see that either. If I want to hear the message of "Everyday People," I'll pop in a greatest hits CD...at least until Sly hits the road again.

Graham was a talented bass player. But he's been playing the same notes for far too long and it's tiresome.

Sly & The Family Stone
Lovebox are delighted to reveal its Saturday night headliner as Sly & The Family Stone. London's ground-breaking music festival welcomes one of music's true innovators: the band that championed black and white integration and fused soul and rock music with psychedelia, releasing seminal albums 'Fresh' and 'Stand!' and timeless songs such as 'Everyday People', 'Dance To The Music' and 'Family Affair'. This will be the first time Sly has played with the band in the UK since 1987 and what's more the line-up includes many of the original roster such as Lisa Stone and Cynthia Robinson.

Lovebox Music Programming Director Rob Wood says "Lovebox is all about collating exhilarating new talent with the original musical legends who have inspired and influenced both us and the acts we are showcasing. We're doing this across all the music scenes that excite us. Sly & The Family Stone always stood for racial and musical integration and is therefore the perfect addition for a festival which is all about bringing together creative talent from around the world to the heart of multicutural London."

I don't get why there are so many posts portraying the police as oppressors. I was there, there were many PPL that had been drinking ALL day long. Im sorry, I WANT the police there, to protect me. The FIRST AVENUE staff was excellent, they controlled the cut off time for drinking, and even bounced this beligerent, stumbling, elbow throwing big guy that was directly in front of me. This guy squared shoulders with me for NO reason and told me he was going to leave and come back to "HIS" spot, and warned me to "don't get it twisted big fella". Now I am just over 6 foot, and 330 lbs, mostly muscle, so Im not exactly scared, but I DO just want to enjoy the show, I am not there to knuckle up on anyone. But he got into it it with a nice lady minding her own on his way back to "HIS" spot cursing her up and down, and he got BOUNCED the hell out QUICK! Several people near me were remarking how thankful they were for them bouncing him. that was RIGHT before Prince took the stage. I saw others of this type all over the bar (not the majority BY FAR, but enough to roll my eyes at)I know that MANY of us are clean cut straight and narrow, high on the MUSIC types, but there IN FACT were people there with the potential to cause problems. The police let the show go a full hour later than what is legal, and needed to keep public order. I left the building, headed straight for my car parked in the garage kinda between 1st Ave. and Target Center, and I saw very little police presence, so portraying this as a Rodney King like display of police force is just dead wrong. we would have gotten a full set if Prince and his people had their act together. there are several things that were not handled well.

I WALKED my wife back to the Hyatt Regency after the Target show, about a half hour walk (due to excess foot traffic), changed clothes, got in my car drove around a bit, got back to the area and headed for the parking garage, while I was pulling around the target center, I was stopped for the Hertz rent a truck that was backing out with the equipment for 1st ave FROM TC. then as I was walking in I saw them start to unload it. You coulda ROLLED it across the street faster tan this. This begs several questions.

1) I have seen the instrument room at Paisley, brutha got a cupla xtra of about everything. why you totin the same stuff from show to show? stagger it.

2) WHY set up after the Target center show? especially if you start at 10, have access to 1st ave at LEAST at 11 (when the doors where scheduled to open) send a few guys over to start setting it up...with the equipment mentioned in 1.

This would allow you to start around 1, play your whole set and be out by the allotted time. you wanna keep playing after 3? tell ppl to come to paisley, you had time to set that up too, you knew you were doing this for at least a week. get your ducks in a row ppl! Hell, you are playing 1st Avenue on 07-07-07 for the 1st time in 20 years! OF COURSE you want Wendy there, ask her a week in advance.

...most of all respect your fan(m)s, it was HOT out, let us into the AC, we had been standing ALL day in the heat, it made my wife ill. I was having breathing problems. It was scheduled for 8:30, we should have been seated at 8:00 - 8:15. the doors should have been opened before 9:30!!! Regardless of where you all are in your set up process.

Lastly, an apology for the delay would have been nice, and at least acknowledged our suffering. The show was good... no doubt, but man you'd have won our hearts collectively wuth an explanation and an apology. ...Just a simple sentence.

You need to hire me to organise your events. smile

I would like to respond about the soap and water. I was one of the people that lined up at 7:00 PM FRIDAY in front of the Ave. untill I got my ticket for the after show. I am from out of town and had a hotel but did not get to use it untill after the Macy's show Sat. Many people sleeping on the street did not have time to go home and return. We all did the best we could with the buddy system, but some locals rode a bus etc. from other areas. We slept on the street because of the Macy show we knew unless we were early in the line we would have to choose and we wanted it all. After we got our Ave. ticket we ran 2 blocks for the Macy show and because it started late many people way behind me got to see their show. We showered for the Target show but we had a hotel in town. Macy's was late and not knowing Target would be so late I am sure many did not chance going home. I am sure I did not offend anyone... but at the Macy show I am sure I could not have been real pleasant after sleeping on the street for 20 hours. If you had a smelly fan next to you, that was a fan that had sacrifed a lot to be standing there and like me, saw all three amazing shows, wishing they were refreshed. I was more offended by the clean smelling girl that was so drunk and foul mouthed, humping her boyfriend on me that I would have loved to have those smelly street fans next to me instead. Just do not say they smelled bad because they did not care. Glad you were clean and got to see all 3 shows...

I agree with all you said about the late set ups. One of the people in line with me all night said there was another show earlier at the Ave. Sat. night they were suppose to go to before Prince made his announcement. They said they go often and the time for the previous show was oddly early so they thought something was up. that is probably why they could not set up earlier anyway so just use the same equipment. It would have saved the tear down time after the Target Center and Prince would have to freshen up in between so there would be time for the set up. In theory it sounds right but reality was different. they might have learned something, it isn't often he does 3 shows, different locations with in 6 hours. I know I learned to be prepared for any and all things when it comes to Prince. I dressed very elegant for Vegas, and usually very top drawer for other concerts, but resonable SHOES. When we left Texas, there was just an announcement of the Ave. show. When we arrived in Minneapolis at 5:30 Friday and saw a line started, we checked in our Hotel, Got cleaned up fast, went to Target an bought smaller cooler, fold out chairs, sunscreen, CD players, etc. and joined the line about 7:00 pm. Friday. I am almost 60 and did not know if I would be successful but knew I did not want to miss a thing and did not want to drive back home saying, " I should have tried" I learned alot about my self thanks to Prince. He brings out the amazingness in ourselves. Glad we all survived and got a wonderful ending to this journey called LIFE. Thank You PRINCE

Did I say I saw all 3 shows? I don't recall saying that. Did I mention that I am a local? I am not. I drove 12 hours from Michigan to see the shows. Target and the Aftershow. Oh and I stood in line for 5 hours.

We didn't get to the Target show till 9 something because we knew if it took us that long to get together, shower, dress, apply makeup, it would take Prince twice as long.

Thats humour too, see you need a sense of humour to be a Prince fan I think.

Love wins. (Seen on bumpersticker)

Just wanted to clarify, I know that there was a show at 1st Ave B4 Prince's aftershow, my point was, the doors to the aftershow were set to open at 11. therefore, THAT show HAD to have been cleared out at 11. This gives the Prince camp free reign at 1st Ave NO later than 11. The question is: "Why start setting up @ 1:30 am, when you could have started at 11pm?"

My point is, he has several stages worth of equipment. Be efficient with them if you wanna do 3 shows in 12 hours within blocks of each other. These issues are predictable, if the right people are in decision making positions.

well I love Larry and appreciate Shelby if the show was going to be short whether it was due to the police or due to Prince ending early I really would have liked to hear more Prince and not Larry or a solo by Shelby!

if anything The Time should have been in the house even if it was for one song !

and no it's not rehashing purple rain ... it would be getting back to that mpls aftershow jam that would be talked about for years to come this was history made..yet since 2001 the shows are a mixture of Larry/musicology /hits

prince did songs at the macys show that could have been performed at first ave while doing his 3121 at first ave which might have been more appropriate for the macys show since it was the launch of the perfume

guess he wanted it that way smile
