Can someone please put me out of my misery and post what the show was like last nightat KOKOS (please not the NME Version its boring)! I want the real deal!

i read a few short reports plus setlist on here this morning
but i can't remember where it was, what with the gazillion++
threads on here now

i think it was in the original KOKO thread...

or perhaps in the original prince in the uk for 21 night one

It was fabulous, by the way - hope you can make one of the O2 shows. There were still tickets on Ticketmaster an hour or so ago - just search for 'Best available' under each date.

Here's a pretty good but short report from The Times Online :

As a taster for his 21 dates at the O2 arena in August, Prince played a two-hour, late-night secret show at the 1,500-capacity Koko in London last night.

Superbly backed by a new line-up for the New Power Generation, which included two Beyoncés-lookalike dancing twins, singer Shelby Johnson and a horn section featuring Maceo Parker, it was a performance few of the people lucky enough to squeeze into the Camden venue will forget.

Coming on stage at midnight, he teased us with "So many hits, so little time". Punctuated by solo turns by Parker and Johnson, the 20-number set included Kiss, Nothing Compares to U, Girls and Boys, Musicology, and ripped-up versions of U Got the Look and the Hendrix-inspired Let's Go Crazy. As well as a broad sweep of his back catalogue, including tracks from last year's 3121 album, there were covers of Play that Funky Music, Amy Winehouse's Love is a Losin' Game and Gnarls Barkley's Crazy.

During one extended jam, Prince disappeared from view and emerged in the middle of the audience on the first floor balcony, grabbing a handful of fans to join him on stage. It all proved too much for one girl, who leapt on the singer and attempted to straddle him as he lay on the stage before being hauled away by security.

Doubtless she was carried away by the sheer hedonistic euphoria, generated not only by the man himself, who even at the age of 48 did nothing to belie his status as music's supreme performer, but also by an ecstatic audience.

"You give me the energy to do this", he told us. "At the O2 we're gonna turn that thang out. They're gonna be the best shows you've ever seen." You better believe it.

tbh, what kind of set list is that!
If he plays that list when i go to see him i'll be most dissapointed. One or two covers is all well and good, but when you have soo many songs, and yet nearly half your set is covers theres something wrong.

its the 3121 club setlist...!

so Koko won't count as one of the 21..!!

I was there and although the covers were great (especially Crazy which was out of this world) I'd still rather here Prince songs than Aretha or Sly - I love those guys but I wanna hear Prince sing Prince. I'd have to agree with the original poster that a couple would more than suffice. It was a fantastic night though

I suppose it depends on the cover he chooses to do. I wasn't so keen on the Aretha cover as it was his support doing the singing. I think we can all agree that we like to see Prince doing the singing.

The Sly cover i thought was funky as hell - and you could tell he was really loving it - so it's all good with me. But yes, i would have preferred him to do something of his own over this.

But sometimes he'll cover something and it'll really excite me - usually more modern songs. - 'the best of u' at the superbowl is a good example.

The Crazy cover at Koko was my favourite moment of the concert. It was just magical. It's a great song, and Prince took it to another level. The lyrics seemed so appropriate - and everyone singing along... well damn, it was like the new Purple Rain.. if you kinda sorta see wha ti mean..

man I wonder how much of that setlist he'll play at The Orpheum on Saturday. That'll be my first Prince concert, and while covers are nice and all, I really hope he doesn't lay into them too heavily like he seems to be doing lately. Covers aside, there's some great stuff on that setlist, but more from your repertoire please, Prince.

about the band: Was there a backup guitar player or not? In fact, can someone confirm the band that played at Kokos? thanks!

it was the Vegas line up.. Mr Hayes and Mr Neto on keys/organ..Maceo n Mike brass , Cora drums Selby and the twinz...John D was on bass..
