Early preview for Calgary (Calgaryplus.ca) The Joy Fantastic
One of the most influential artists of the 80's and most eccentric musical figures of the '90's, Prince entered the millennium set to "Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic." Featuring a slew of guests such as Gwen Stefani, Sheryl Crow and Ani Di Franco, "Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic," Prince's most recent album, showcases some of his most accessible material in recent years. The album was recorded with his band, The New Power Generation, with whom he has played with since 1990. Artistic Control Born in Minneapolis in 1958, Prince became the youngest producer in Warner Brothers history at age 19; the record company was so impressed by his talent that they gave him $100,000 dollars to record his debut album, "For You" (1978), as well as complete creative control over his recordings. The decision would prove to be a wise one as Prince would go on to record such multi-million selling albums as "1999" (1982) and his classic "Purple Rain" (1983). His songs have also been covered by major artists like Sinead O'Connor (Nothing Compares 2 U), Tom Jones (Kiss), and The Bangles (Manic Monday). Prince had a falling out with Warner over artistic freedom and ownership of his songs in the late '90s, which led to the whole "Formerly Known As" and "The Artist" period. However, he has resolved the conflict and returned to his former moniker (much to the relief of radio djs everywhere). The Show Last time he swept through Calgary, he put on an energetic show with lots of old favourites. After the show he attended a benefit at Cowboys, actually mingling with a few lucky fans. This time around look for lots of new funky material mixed with some oldies. Chris Leon

Well...not exactly. What members of the current NPG were in the band in 1990/1991? Oh yeah...Prince. This "preview" reads like a first-year intern got an assignment and really ran with it. Right into a brick wall. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/
