Hollywood 4/20: The Roof Wuz on Fire! Still in recovery mode after three Prince shows in one day. I'll cut to the quick: The concerns about the setlist that I had previously voiced on this message board were, in the end, completely unfounded.
Prince and his band play with such vibe and conviction, it doesn't matter that the back catalog isn't mined more deeply. Three19 posted the details of the main show (the soundcheck also included Can't Stop This Feeling I Got), so I'll offer some highlights: many humorous moments, including a massive 300-pound plus guy pulled on stage to dance; the warm glow of friendship when Sheila E guested in the encores; the piano medley (enough cannot be said) and just generally the positivity. The Kodak Theatre is truly gorgeous and extremely intimate. Prince's stage lighting, and velvet curtains matched the theatre decour perfectly. The video screens were used with great effect--tastefully and with restraint. As for the aftershow: The lines getting in to the House of Blues were nightmarish--the members line seemed just as bad as the will call line. Prince hit the stage at about 1:30 a.m. and played for nearly two hours, with Sheila E out front on a stand-up drum kit and Larry Graham still getting lots of air time. If the main show was mostly jazz, the after-show was all about funk. We also got a soaring version of Paisley Park. I do have to say that my energy level was really flagging as the after show went on. It ain't easy keepin' up with that skinny dude with the high voice!

Sorry, but I have to add that the highlight of the aftershow for me wasn't the great version of Paisley Park, but the haunting version of Beautiful Strange. Or maybe it was the FONKAY version of Calhoun Square!!
I've seen him more than 30 times, and I have to say I don't remember his guitar playing to be so raw and angry. It was unbeleivable... the solo's were just sick. He had that cocky swagger back with his gum-chewing and "how bout that?!?" stares into the crowd. My chin is sore from hitting the floor repeatedly! Thanks Prince for kicking my ass!!!

Damn I wish I could have went to the aftershow but it was damn near impossible to park or get in etc. How is the set-up of the HOB? Is it GA with everyone all packed like sardines? Can everyone see no matter where you are at? On the way home I was thinking..right now he's probably wreckin shit. "Climb in my fur."

It was a GREAT SHOW!!!! Prince was at his best. My heart melted numerous times at the Kodak Theatre. His solo towards the end of the concert was simply breath taking. ADORE was my favorite last night. The HOB was packed!!!!
He was FUNKY!!!!! He has a kick ass band!!!!(I found his gum chewing a turn on!!!!!

The HOB is general admission--just a big open floor. There are some balcony level tables for people having dinner, but yes, you're generally just packed in like sardines. I usually stand right near the bar, which is elevated. This allows me to get a good view of the stage as well as quaff ales.

I heard he wore red (my favorite color) at the aftershow. he doesnt usually wear red as much as he used to. i think he thinks it's evil as i've heard. NONSENSE. RED is a power color. passionate. outgoing. vibrant. sexy. prince KNOWS THIS!!! i think the swagger, the gum, and his arrogant looks/smiles to the audience is sexy, cool and cute! he REALLY let LA have it! keep gettin down prince! we're with u. May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love.

MINOR CELEBRITY SIGHTING: FROM CLUELESS! The redhead that played Amber and the black guy who's now in the show Scrubs were sitting in front of me...she knew every song...he just danced a lot...don't know either of their names though... Having gone to both shows on 4/19 and 4/20. I have to say that the concert was EXCELLENT!!!!!. WE didn't sit down all night thru either concert, However when Prince started talking about slavery, racism and God. Alot of people sat down and had stunned looks on their faces. I wish more people would realize that these are subjects near and dear to Prince. He's all for reparations for black people and it would be nice if his white fans would support his mission. Like he said on Saturday Night, soon, we will all meet in agreement!!!! I must say that he treated his fans with much love at both concerts, and he is a vanguard in that respect. I love u Prince!!!!!
And I'm willin ready, and able to do the Work!!! Eos!!!!

Absolutely agree...Beautiful Strange was my favorite part of the aftershow, and as fierce as the whole show was, that's saying alot. It was seriously hypnotic...talk about a natural high! And I haven't come down since! All 7 and we'll watch them fall.

Chris, how do you think I feel!!! I’ve been to only 3 concerts and I was blown away at the fierce way Prince wielded that guitar. I saw him on Jam of The Year and the Hit & Run tours. This concert makes those concerts seem as if a Prince look alike performed instead of Prince. The difference between those shows and this one is unbelievable. Musically this concert just kicked my ass over and over and over.
This was the funnest weekend!!! Hey Blue 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740
