My own review from 3-30 in D.C. I know many people have posted reviews, and many of you are far bigger fans than I am, but a friend and I flew all the way from Madison, WI to see Prince in D.C., and the trip paid off on Saturday night. It was such a unique experience to sit in for the soundcheck and actually see him do his job. He played on stage for awhile, then came down and sit behind where all of us members were. At one point, he asked the audience if they had missed Kiss or Little Red Corvette from the night before, and Prince said "I didn't either." But enough about the soundcheck.
The show was absolutely amazing. I am used to the concerts where Prince plays several excerpts from songs as a medley, and only a few entire songs. This, to my content, was not the case. He started out with a full-length TRC, followed by a funkier version of Muse 2 the pharoah, Mellow, and 1 + 1 + 1=3. He played some old school favorites like Pass the Peas, Sing a Simple Song, Raspberry Beret, Take Me With U, I Wanna Be Ur Lover, Do Me Baby, When you Were Mine, Nothing Compares to U, How Come you Don't call me anymore, Strange Relationship, Adore, and Sometimes it snows in April. Most of the newer stuff, besides that on TRC I didn't know very well, but he did play La La La and I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore. He also did a few covers from Santana and Eryka Badu, in addition to doing a funky version of Rollercoaster. He brought some people up on stage, but he didn't seem pleased when Linda immediately went behind him and did something, maybe grabbing his butt (I don't know). But he handled it very well, so not to piss off the crowd, but I could tell that he was bothered by it. He also did a bit on Abe Lincoln and separatism, which was pretty moving. The last third or so of his two hour and fifty minute performance was a piano medley in which he did some of my favorites from above. During Do Me Baby, the entire crowd was singing along, and Prince jumped up from the piano and said something to the effect of "Damn, I can't take it!" The piano medley was a great time to see Prince in his element. While he was singing Adore, two girls next to me screamed through the whole thing, so I pretty much missed that one. But seeing him perform it was good enough!! After I bought tickets to this show, I kind of regretted spending so much, but after seeing the show and Prince reaffirming his passion and talent for pure music, I have no regrets and plan on attending at least three more shows, especially since he is not selling them for members through ticketmaster now. Seriously, see this tour. There is something so different and magical about him these days. He seems happier than he ever has been. And, as a side note, I heard Alicia Keys' new release of Prince's How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore, and I hate it. I liked her at firt, but her voice sounds awful on this one, and it cannot be compared to Prince's original! Peace. Luv | |
