Did Prince play at the afterparty last night? I was listening to Mancow this morning and he said he was at a secret Prince show last night at Excalibur. Mancow, who dissed Prince on air not even a week ago. Anywho, what happened last night?

I'm about to sound selfish, but pleeaassee tell me Prince did NOT play at Excalibur. I couldn't make it and will be very sad if Prince played. At the end of the concert they repeated several times that it was an afterparty.

I thought P was done with Chicago and ended it with the HOB fiasco. Excalibur ...again?
Mancow can suck it. Christian Zombie Vampires

Apparently he did not. It was just a party.
He also played Elephants and FLowers??? and 17 days at last nights show. I hope he keeps changing it up through out the tour. Christian Zombie Vampires

I know, sigh. When I heard the news last night I thought for a second about going to the afterparty...but then I remembered the monumental waves of ennui I felt at Excalibur a couple of weeks ago, and thought twice about subjecting myself to another helping of existential misery and overpriced drinks.

I was going to say...After your phenomenal review last time...I can only imagine the enjoyment Mancow musta had. I don't think I'd ever go to an afterparty...especially if it's put on by something as generic/overpriced as Excalibur. Seems like he's really catering to the mainstream crowd these days. yeah, excalibur is kind of a pedestrian choice for something as potentially exciting as an afterparty. chicago ain't exactly hurting for decent club spaces, ya know....

overpriced drinks? Tell me about it! I was really fiending for something sweet last night when we got to the club, so I ordered a Coke (not a big fan of alcoholic beverages anymore). $2.75 for a friggin Coke!!! I stuck to ice water the rest of the night. At least they actually give you ice water there though, unlike some of the other clubs that only sell you bottled water for about $3 a bottle! Maybe the only REALLY GOOD aftershows from here on out will be the ones that cost nothing or only a few bucks and the'll be happening because Prince seriously feels like he wants to JAM!!! (And if the wife will let him.)

I can't believe I never answered the original question.
There was no performance that night, but the club was relatively empty. It was about the same size crowd you'd see on a regular Tuesday or Wednesday night. This worked out well for the small group of us on the dance floor. We had plenty of room to move around. Prince kinda walked around the whole place with one of his bodyguards and finally stopped on this little balcony thing right above the dance floor. He just stood there playing air guitar and watching us dance for quite a while. After a while, he went downstairs and hung out in the corner for the rest of the night, just watching people dance. It was so weird to see him looking so approachable. How is it that someone as legendary as he is can go into a club and just hang out in the crowd, without a big entourage, and not get mobbed? It's cool that most of the people there seemed to have too much respect for him to annoy the crap out of him. I saw him there up until right before the club closed. A few of us were secretly hoping he'd get on the dance floor with us, but no such luck. The dj played lots of Prince stuff and a lot of 90s top 40 pop/dance music. It was a little weird; for a while there, I felt like I was back in the 9th grade. Even though there was no show, I still feel that it was totally worth it. I had so much fun, and I just can't put a price on my own run-in with Prince that night, no matter how brief it was or how embarrassingly shy and awkward I was. Sorry for not giving a full report sooner! "We're all members of the animal kingdom

Thank you for this! I get the feeling most of the partygoers were folks who were probably the usual suspects, who like you said, have too much respect for the man. There was no performance that night, but the club was relatively empty. Yeah, I'm sure things might've been different if there were a bunch of star-struck casual fans there. As I mentioned in another thread, his bodyguard pretty much prevented anyone from approaching him, but he was more than happy to chat with people whom he just kinda ran into. It was amusing to watch him playing the air guitar to his own songs that the dj was playing. And of course, I'm still enjoying the thought that the man I've been admiring and inspired by for so many years, spent so much time observing me and a few other people. Okay, I'm sounding star-struck myself now, so I'll stop right there. "We're all members of the animal kingdom
