Q Magazine: New album this Fall??! As reported a few days ago, the August edition of 'Q' magazine has hit the shelves featuring a 5 page article on our lil' buddy.
There's not that much we don't know already about Prince - it's mainly an overview of his career and what he's been up to in the last few years - but it's still a great article with some good pics. As usual, Q are pretty gushing about P. However - right at the end of the article - "We're going to bring real music back", he says of his most recent tour. "If you got some little musicians in the family, bring them so they can see what it's all about, so we don't have a bunch of computers in the future". Strange words from someone whose best work was a winning fusion of musicianship and technology. Except that the defining moment of his US tour thus far has been an emotive acoustic version of Little Red Corvette, and an album featuring acoustic versions of his hits is due for release this autumn". News to me!!!! One of my favourite parts is linked to a quote by Ricky P, talking about Prince and a pregnant Mayte's new-found domesticity, circa Emancipation: '...Ricky P remembers visiting the studio and Prince "coming down the stairs in these big bunny slippers. He said, Come on in. He was so happy. I've never seen him happier than when she was pregnant". The article also chooses Prince 6 albums which 'everyone should own' - Dirty Mind - happy Dansa? 1999 Purple Rain Around The World In A Day Parade Sign O' The Times and looks at 10 Prince 'myths' - 1. Did Prince ever play ping pong with Michael Jackson? 2. Does Prince take himself too seriously? 3. Does Prince like pets? 4. Did Prince once play a gig for Prince Albert of Monaco? 5. Did Prince meet Mani via the Internet? 6. Is Prince any good at bowling? 7. What was Prince's first band called? 8. Did he change his name to 'Victor'? 9. Did Prince see Miles Davis naked? (TRUE, apparently!) 10. Is Prince telepathic? Anyway, as much as I love Musicology, I'm already gagging for a new album. I'm sure everyone would love new material but... acoustic versions of the hits? Can't wait! 4. Did Prince once play a gig for Prince Albert of Monaco?
Q interviewed him in Monaco at this gig. The photos were fantastic. I think it was in 1995 maybe (possibly earlier). The gig was for Prince Albert's birthday.

Hi Comon,
If you read ANY of my previous posts ever since I joined the Org you'll find I've NEVER posted misleading information. I'll leave that to the haters. Maybe if you buy the magazine, turn to page 72 and read the second-last paragraph you'll see what I referred to. I'M not saying there'll be an acoustic album in the Autumn - I'm just posting what I've read. (Hence the question mark in the title of this thread). In what was an already interesting article, that line stood out a mile. Are you not interested? I presume that's why you read this thread. I'm just trying to do what most people do on this site - spread the info and keep others (particularly those who haven't had chance to buy the mag yet) informed. Which I thought was quite a nice thing to do. So I'll sleep easy tonight, don't worry The only thing I will say is that it remains to be seen... we all know what happened to 'Crystal Ball', 'Dream Factory', the 'High' album, 'Roadhouse Garden', et al. I'll wait until somebody else reads the article to confirm what I've read. Unless I picked up the Ltd. Edition, one-off copy which contains that line, that is. bernie10 - nope, I'm afraid. No Lovesexy
Well, I wasn't going to answer the 'Hit or Myth?' questions (I thought I'd give people a chance to read the magazine - plus, I'm sure most of us know the answers anyway , but here they are, according to Q: 1. True! While Prince was working in a studio in Los Angeles in 1986, Michael Jackson dtopped by to ay hello. Spotting a ping-pong table nearby, Prince asked Jackson if he wanted to play. When Prince threatened to slam the ball, Jackson dropped his bat and put his hands in front of his face. Game over. "Did you see that?" crowed Prince afterwards. "He played like (deaf-blind campaigner) Helen Keller!". 2. Apparently Prince does take himself seriously. Acc to Q: "I do take myself seriously. I consider 'taking myself too seriously' to be a compliment". 3. True! (apparently). Q: There's a Paisley Park cat called Mia. "She understands me", he says. 4. True! While visiting the Mediterranean playboy's retreat for the 1994 World Music Awards, Prince decided to play a secret gig at a club called Stars & Bars. Among the guests were ursula Andress, claudia Schiffer - and the heir to the principality's throne, whom Prince introduced from the stage as "the funkiest man in Monaco". 5. False! Q: Althoughas a student in Toronto she did 'lurk' in Prince discussion groups. "She was obsessed with him", says a fellow student. "It's all she ever talked about". 6. True! According to ex-Sly & The Family Stone bassist, long-time friend and sometime bowling partner Larry Graham, "He's an excellent bowler. He gets almost all strikes". 7. Grand Central Corporation Q: At Minneapolis' Central High School, Prince - then the proud owner of an afro - played guitar in the band, though wasn't sure how far he'd take music as a career. "Eventually", he told the school newspaper, "I would like to go to college". 8.False! "I read that somewhere," he says. Before adding, "I was never called Victor". The confusion arose from the line 'I will be called Victor' in The Sacrifice Of Victor, from his 'symbol' album. 9. True! Q: Prince would visit Miles Davis at home and Davis would answer the door stark naked. "All of human history was on that body", says Prince. "See that and you wouldn't want to eat for a week". 10False! Prince: "No, I just practise a lot". I'm in work but, if I get time, I'll type out the article...

I think the Acoustic Hits album might be poppycock.

Finally, what Q has to say about the 5 'essential' Prince albums:
DIRTY MIND - 4/5 The album which raised sex talk to new levels of artistry - and funk. A half-hour shot of longing (When You Were Mine) and lust (Head) from a man in a G-String who looked like Rick James crossed with Britney Spears. Purplest moment: The title? The cover? The lyrics to Head? Take your pick! 1999 - 4/5 Synth-funk's crowning glory. The title track is the ultimate party anthem, but Prince isn't finished there, breaking into kaleidoscopic pop (Little Red Corvette) and teaching computers how to dance (Let's Pretend We're Married). Purplest moment: D.M.S.R. equals Prince in four words: "dance, music, sex, romance". PURPLE RAIN - 5/5 The moment at which Prince ascended to superstardom, a sexed-up concept album (with Prince as both subject and mastermind), carried aloft on his magical fusion of exuberant funk, histrionic rock and tingling power ballads. Purplest moment: The squealing guitar finale to Let's Go Crazy. AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY - 4/5 Criminally underrated mix of perky pop (Raspberry Beret, Paisley Park) and extravagant balladry (Condition Of The Heart, The Ladder). The latter, a quasi-spiritual chat about the divine ("Everybody needs salvation of the soul"), may well be his greatest ever slow jam. Purplest moment: Raspberry Beret, obviously. PARADE - 4/5 Ostensibly the soundtrack to Prince's cinematic folly Under The Cherry Moon, a sparkling experiment encompassing falsetto electro-pop (Kiss) and the impassioned Sometimes It Snows In April. Purplest moment: Rhyming "the steps of Versailles" with "birds do fly" on Girls & Boys. SIGN O' THE TIMES - 5/5 A key album of the 80's and Prince at his most deliriously epic - reaching out into social comment (the title track's haunting reflections on AIDS), turning introspective (If I Was Your Girlfriend), but still not afraid to party hard (U Got The Look). Purplest moment: The strutting beat to U Got The Look - like Jagger on funk.

Don't know... "Musicology" was once an album (or double album) with new songs and hits played differently (i.e. other arrangements...) Maybe those other arrangemnts were acoustic versions and he just split the album into 2 seperate albums... We'll see... He'll probably change his mind anyway and not release it... Neversin. for a while now, so it wouldn't surprise me if it does get released before Christmas.

Okay, my friend. I think we've gotten enough mileage out of this whole acoustic album bit. It'll be nice, but it probably won't sell much, but you never know. People said the same thing about Musicology. I'd buy it, just cuz I'm a loyal supporter.

The lyrics to Head? Take your pick! I'd say the purplest moment on this album is the 1-2 punch of Sister/Partyup. They are both seperate animals, but together they make an interesting statement. Here, I think the purplest moment is the middle guitar solo (the one where in the movie, Prince is before Wendy and Wendy's on her knees., and the outro section. If you have ever heard any of the extended versions of this song, you know that the edited out section is where the song really kills! Got 2 get fonkey! Seriously disagree here. The purplest moment is the song She's Always In My Hair, but if on the album itself, Paisley Park. Purplest moment: the drum breakdown on Life Can Be So Nice. This has to be one Prince's most under-rated songs ever. Huh? There are at least a half dozen purple moments on here. The playground feel of Play In the Sunshine, the beat of Housequake, the guitar solo on ICNTTPOYM, the demo feel of Forever In My Life and The Cross, the strut-funk of Strange Relationship, and the concertesque It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night. Remember what Purple moments really are - if you agree that the color purple represents spiritualtiy and sexuality, then each of the moment that EYE described combine both concepts and merge beatufiully.

I LOVE ACOUSTIC GUITAR...
ESPECIALLY 12 STRING.... I tell ya the 12 string really has a beautiful way of waking up your senses... becuz it activates octaves that are higher than the original notes. TRULY BEAUTIFUL. SO if this is the case of an acoustic CD... I hope he throws in a 12 string for GOOD MEASURE and RAW HARMONIES. GODBLISS SINGMIA

About those questions...I remember hearing through AP that P did in fact play for Prince Albert and that he is a huge fan of P's. Also, my mutual friend with Mani says they did not meet online, though it seems she was pretty obsessed with our little P. We all love P, I think we know these answers... Smooches;)
