I GOT A RECORD CONTRACT!

...well, not really, it's a Management Contract...and it's my cousin's. anyhoo, she asked me to read it through before she signs it...hell knows why, i havent got a fucking clue about the music bis. anyway, this is my concern:

MANAGEMENT COMMISION

- 20% of Gross Income due under the musical activities of the contract
- Gross Income shall be less tour costs

is 20% the going rate for managers? last thing i want is my cousin being ripped off by a dirty slimey sleezy schmuck that makes an israeli diamond broker look clean.

anyway...soon i'll be able 2 sponge of my cuz's fame and fortune! yay! giggle

that would be great.

1st off, her recording contract is forthcoming, but i have the management contract in front of me, it's all pretty clear, 3 year contract...i'm just not sure if the 20% is the going rate for managers?

When it comes to manager commisions do you have a choice in getting ripped off? Have you guys talked to a lawyer? That may be the best course of action....

Hmm that is tough.... hmmm Even if the commision is high do you really have a choice in the matter? I mean are there other options if it is high? Did the manager come to you? or did you go to the manager?

hmm. 10-20% is not unusual - at least literary agents can command that much and if they're good they earn it.

but, the part i'd ask about is the 'gross = less tour costs" part. sounds like cousin will be responsible for paying her own promotional costs, and AFTER that the manager's cut comes off the top?

would that mean cousin could end up broke and still owing manager money?

gether to go see musicians union. they give you a lawyer free for one session..and then a reduced cost after that.

mangers in the UK always take 20%.

def get the contract checked out.

most disputes in the music industry are manager/artist related.
