CLAUSTROPHOBIA ATTACK!!! So I really lived up to my username today, sheesh...
When I came into work today, I was asked by my boss to help out the new mailroom department which is terribly terribly understaffed and overburdened. So I went into the mailroom and found that it was a teensy weensy little room with about 20 stressed-out, spastic, chaotic bodies running around like chickens with their heads cut off. And they're falling over each other asking me to do any number of things I've never done before. And then my boss' boss asks me to make deliveries all around the building. And ironically, Anxiety had an anxiety attack. I went back to my desk and explained to my other supervisor that I couldn't go back into that mailroom, and they were cool with it. Then I started to explain to my boss, and she was like, "NO. YOU'RE GOING BACK DOWN THERE. NOW." Cue Anxiety's sub-anxiety attack. Then, my supervisor explained the situation to my boss, my boss showed some mercy, and I didn't have to go back down to the dungeon. But MAN, this was a new one. I know I have an issue with claustrophobia. I was separated by my parents and trampled by a mob of frenzied fundamentalist Christians when I was a little boy, and since then I've been really freaked out in big frenzied mobs of people. But it's never been an issue at the workplace, where I'm typically sitting around writing or editing or being a desk potato. It was weird and awkward and embarrassing to say that I couldn't do something at work because I'm ascurred. Phobias suck.

Ugh, there was a while when I could barely get on a plane, and I LOVE flying!
Stress is s funny thing. It does weird things to the body. Even good stress is stress.

it's just a weird feeling to know that something that you're physically able to do, and something that you're being told you HAVE to do, is something you're just not ABLE to do because your nerves are taking over and shutting you down. it's a freaky feeling. whoo.

See a lot of it is not the anxiety itself, but the anticipation of the anxiety!

sometimes i get little pangs of what it must feel like to have a fear of flying. sometimes when i'm on a flight, i'll wonder what it would be like if the plane just suddenly started going down and i'll freak a bit. but just for like a second. i guess i really like flying, even though my monkey brain sometimes asks why it makes sense to be inside something so heavy that's flying through the air. If a fear of flying is anything like claustrophobia, then dang, I hope they at least gave you some happy pills or a shot of whiskey, or maybe called up Deepak Chopra to talk you down or something....
