Clerks. (1994) #60 in YMDB
Mallrats (1995) #131 in YMDB
Chasing Amy (1997) #86 in YMDB
Dogma (1999) # 87 in YMDB
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) #294 in YMDB
Jersey Girl (2004) # 1590 in YMDB]

Good Will Hunting is not a Kevin Smith film it is by Gus Van Sant and in YMDB the film is in #97

His next project by the way is "The Green Hornet" (Jake Gyllenhaal is favorite to take the lead role in new movie The Green Hornet)....The Green Hornet was made into a TV series in the sixties, which famously starred kung-fu legend Bruce Lee.

I'm a HUGE Kevin Smith fan! Got on board with "Clerks" and haven't looked back... although, I have to say " regarding "Jersey Girl".... what happened?

I suppose you all have seen 'An Evening with Kevin Smith" where he tells that bizarre story about Prince... right?

i have to say i like all his movies pretty much equally - i don't know if i'd call myself a "fan", but i'd go so far as to say that i can sit through any given movie he's done and be entertained. i think he has a great gift for writing dialogue, and i have a great time just listening to his characters rant and ramble.

They're all good. The only one that's kinda iffy with me is Mallrats because it's like it was made for the teenage crowd. Not as intellectual as the others.

Didn't he help on rewrites? It's been a while since I've read about that movie. Gus was the director, and it was Ben and Matt's story.

The only Smith films I've seen are Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy. I've gotten a chuckle here or there, but his films have zero to do with the way life is actually lived; they're nice fantasies.

I remember seeing a Janeane Garofalo stand-up thing on TV where she was talking about Chasing Amy. She referred to the scene in the car where Ben Affleck spills his guts about his feelings for the female lead and - of course rolleyes - she falls for him then and there. "In real life", she said, "that doesn't work. You want me to fall for you? Don't call me." lol And, incidentally, a dyke friend of mine was much offended by CA and said he knows "shit about dykes".

The fact that Kevin Smith is a rich man while Neil Labute remains relatively obscure is indicative of what's wrong with our culture.

He does tell a good Prince story, though.

Yeah - I heard that on Howard too. Since Matt and Ben were relative unknowns back then, Kevin used his influence with Miramax to get the film made - and I believe it was a pretty low budget enterpriese inspite of Robin Williams appearance (which won him an Oscar, BTW)

He tells an excellent Prince story! In "An Evening with Kevin Smith" he does explain how and why he made "Chasing Amy." I think his character of Amy was supposed to be an evolved individual who falls in love with a person for who they are - and not necessarily preferring or excluding him because of his gender. I have personally known bi-sexual women who've dated and been in relationships with both sexes - so perhaps if you look at it like that, it won't seem like such a stretch to believe. Most of his movies seem to be "over-the-top" and would definitely enter that fanatsy arena. Not all movies need to depict life the way it is actually lived... if that were so, Walt Disney would've sank his ship long ago.... in a galaxy far far away....
smile

P.S. I think Neil LaBute's work is well known (although 'Possession' was not one of his best efforts) - and you really can't compare the two filmmakers. Neil's work is far darker and falls into an altogether different genre. But I guess you can say that Aaron Eckhart is to Neil what Jason Mewes is to Kevin. lol

Those numbers sound pretty accurate. After "Clerks", they all kind of went downhill alhtough "Chasing Amy" was better than "Mallrats" iMHO. I can't even take myself to see "Jersey Girl" but considering it ain't in theathers anymore, I won't have to!

"Vulgar" is a movie he producded (I think) and appears in but it ain't for the faint of heart. It is really fucking dark. Howard Stern was talking about it when it came out and was saying it was the most twisted movie he's ever seen, or something to that effect. I would avoid it. Just don't think about it!

Those are my faves as well. I really enjoyed Jersey Girl. It was more in the vein of Chasing Amy, but a tad bit more serious. Its getting slammed by a lot of his fans who can't stand the idea that the man has moved beyond making movies about slacker stoners.

I think you'd dig it though!
