Well, i feel like I should say that I don't really "like" Salo (I guess it doesn't really mean anything to say you enjoy such a movie). I just feel like it deserves a mention on any list like this because it has to be the most revolting, repulsive movie ever made (if there's a more DISGUSTING movie than this one, I don't want to see it). Having said that, I do think that it's a serious movie worthy of discussion, and the director accomplished what he set out to do. Where did you find a copy of it? I have a bootlegged copy of the Criterion edition...

I definitely would recommend the rest of the movies on my list to anyone, though - I think they're all expertly made. I'm glad to see we share some similar tastes - that doesn't happen to me very often!

Mira Nair. http://www.mirabaifilms.com/films.html She also did Mississippi Masala and Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. I loved Monsoon Wedding.

I was going to buy 'Salo' on DVD the other week because I've heard its so outrageous. Its still banned in Australia, isn't it???

Anyway - you can get it from any HMV store in the U.K. for about £9.99 on DVD, so it can't be that bad - can it??? Why is it so notorious???

PLEASE DON'T READ THIS IF YOU'RE EATING OR ABOUT TO EAT.

The reason the movie is so notorious is mostly due to the fact that (deep breath, I'm getting a little nauseous just thinking about this...) there is an extended sequence in the movie that involves the consumption of shit. One of the antagonists defecates and the floor and makes a crying teenaged girl eat it with a spoon, screaming "mange, mange!!!" (eat, eat). That is followed by a banquet sequence where all the characters in the movie partake in a very graphic feast of shit.

There is also violence in the movie - rapes, disobedient boys being branded, scalpings, genitals and breasts being burned - but the "circle of shit" sequence is the main reason for this film's controversy and it is without question one of the single most difficult-to-watch scenes ever committed to film. I never want to meet a person who is sexually aroused by this movie.

What bothers me more than the shit eating itself is the fact that it sounds like the girl is physically forced to eat it. Hmm. Thanks for explaining, flip.

Yes, that was the affect Pasolini was going for judging by what I've read about this movie and the reasons it was made. Pasolini (the writer and director) was a marxist and the abuse that was aimed at this girl and the other young people in this film was apparently intended as an analogy for the abuse commoners were subjected to by their "capitalist/fascist overlords". That's not a world-view I personally subscribe to and watching this movie did not change my mind, needless to say...

I will say one thing though - Pasolini wanted to make a film that reflected his disgust with the world as he saw it, and I guess he achieved that. By this standard this film is a success in that it does what it set out to do.

I found the third story just slightly over-long, but otherwise I love every moment of this movie. Sometimes I just let it run on the DVD player even when I'm not seriously watching it because it's so wonderful to look at.

Sorry man (or girl?)! Were you asking me?

Yeah, I've seen 'Monsoon Wedding' and what a mint movie that was too. The director's called

Mira Nair, like VinaBlue mentioned earlier. She's also made another cracker called

'Salaam Bombay' which I think was only the second Indian film to ever be nominated for a

'Best Foreign Film' Oscar, at the time!

I seen quite a few Iranian films too coz I just think they're class.... the buried treasure of

world cinema if you ask me.

Take care fella!

saw a bizarre japanesse movie last nite on channel 4 called BATTLE ROYAL.
it was mad! very violent and sometimes sick but if you got to take it for what it is
i.e. just a movie, then it was fun to watch! Reality t.v. to the extreme was school kids slaughtering each other in a game of survival on an island. how did that crazy film maker get away with that!? confuse

glad i watched it though. entertaining indeed smile

I bought Salo from an HMV megastore 30miles from where i live, cuz I had heard so much about it.

Im intrigued by bizarre or digusting things (thas why I go on www.ogrish.com) and tend to gravitate towards them.
After reading many reviews about "Salo: 120 days of Sodom", explaining about the rape, the torture, the insanity, the shit eating, the murder...i thought it was worth a look. wink

I have to say that strangely I wasnt all that disburbed by it, but then U try looking at everything www.ogrish.com has to show (which is all real) and it pretty much kills off any reaction U would have to a movie as vile as Salo, which (for its Political controversy) the Director was murdered for.

My tastes are inclined towards the extreme as well - that's how Salo ended up in my collection.

The only scene that I found truly revolting in the movie was the circle of shit segment - I honestly found it impossible to stomach. Not only did I find it disgusting, but I found the humiliation of the girl to be truly disturbing. I really think it's the most sadistic scene I've ever seen in a non-XXX movie.

The violence in the rest of the movie didn't really affect me. I guess we're all just too acclimatized to graphic violence to be truly disturbed by it. However, I think the closing sequence of the movie is excellent - in the sense that it's very skillfully shot and presented. Pasolini may have been a twisted sick freak, but he possessed genuine talent. I'm not sure what the piece of music is that's playing while the butchery is being done in the courtyard, but I really think it suits the atmosphere perfectly.

I've heard varying explanations for Pasolini's murder. Most of the stories I've found on the net claim he was killed by a male prostitute - a trick gone wrong, so to speak. The consensus seems to be that there was no political motivation for his murder. Where did you hear otherwise?
