Ok, yesterday about noon, it felt like an eyelash got under my eyelid. If that's not the most uncomphortable feeling as it is, I couldn't get it out. So I spent the next 6 hours at work with one eye shut.

I get home, and try everything from eye drops to saline solution to standing under the shower with the water hitting me in the face. No luck.

I go to bed hoping that it would work itself out sometime. Nope. I wake up this morning and now my eye is swollen almost shut! I call my doctor and guess what? He has his own doctor's appointment this morning and MAYBE could fit me in around 2 pm later today. It's 10: 30 am now.

IT FEELS LIKE I HAVE GLASS FRAGMENTS UP IN THERE! I WANT TO PULL MY WHOLE EYE OUT RIGHT NOW IT'S SO IRRITATING...

Any advice?
It's like my tear duct isn't working anymore, it's gotten that dry. My eyes have always been super sensitive. This is driving me crazy.

I can tell I'm not going to get anything done today at work until this is fixed.

Every mom knows and fears it. It stalks playgrounds, day care, schools and can be found in every household sometime during childhood. The dreaded Pink Eye. What is it and how do we stop it? Read on.

Pink eye is known as conjunctivitis in medical terminology. This inflammatory condition affects the conjunctiva - As we learned last month this is a thin membrane that covers the white of the eye (sclera). It normally produces moisture to coat and lubricate the eye and has tiny blood vessels. When this membrane becomes irritated or inflamed the blood vessels enlarge, thus making the eye red.

Causes of conjunctivitis vary but most commonly arise from:
1) infection
2) allergy
3) environmental irritants.

Infectious causes include bacteria and viruses which are very common when children are together. The distinguishing mark of an infection is a discharge of fluid - pus, that can crust around the lids and eyelashes. Your doctor will most likely prescribe a regimen of ophthalmic antibiotic drops or ointments to be used in cases of bacterial infection.

Viral infections produce red eyes, sore throat and runny nose - symptoms found with the common cold. There is usually a watery discharge and can last from one to two weeks, or until the virus has run its course.

Infectious conjunctivitis is highly contagious, whether its viral or bacterial. Contact of common objects must be avoided - towels, clothing, etc. Anything that person touches can be contaminated. Because of this frequent handwashing is advised.

Allergies can also produce conjunctivitis. Some allergies produce itchy, watery eyes while others will give a chronic redness. Antihistamines, drugs that suppress the body's immune response, may be effective in relieving symptoms. As with any other medication, check with your family doctor to make sure it is right for you or your child.

Environmental irritants such as smoke, or fumes may cause conjunctivitis. In these cases eradication of the offending irritant is the best remedy.

Uncommon Causes
Several diseases can produce red eyes and are of a more serious nature than conjunctivitis. Symptoms to watch for are pain, blurred vision, and severe light sensitivity. A medical evaluation of a red eye is necessary to determine what is the cause to avoid possible damage.

The key is prevention. Handwashing is very effective and can prevent many cases - especially spreading the condition from one eye to the other. Careful supervision and quick action can help lessen the severity of a common childhood illness from infiltrating your family and home.

So according to that, maybe what-ever got under there caused an infection?

I hate this feeling.

madartista, I hope it's not too late. I already gave my son a hug and a kiss before I came to work. Reading up on pink eye today, there are 3 kinds. Viral, Bacterial and Allergic. Judging from yesterday to today, it seems that I got something stuck in my eye and it may have turned into pink eye. This would have made it the bacterial kind which is not AS contagious, but still. Reading more, this time of year brings on the allergic kind, so... could be that too. As far as the viral kind, I haven't really been in any situation that would put me in contact with someone that I recall. At my job, I have my own office and pretty much stick to myself most of the day. I'm usually pretty careful using the facilities by using the paper towel that I dry my hands off with to open the door when leaving. I also keep a bottle of hand sanitizer at my desk and use it religiously because of the way colds and flu's spread like wild-fire around the office. I was never this anal until I started working here.

Go the Emergency Room. But how the hell did you manage to type this thread with one eye open.... Take care, hopefully your eye is okay.

Ok, It's official.

1.) I may have got something stuck up in there yesterday, but there is nothing that he could find there now.

2.) I may have scratched my cornea a little, thus having the painful sensation that I'm hitting something everytime I blink. If it gets worse tomorrow, I have to go see an optometrist. I've never had anything wrong with my eyes in my life, so that would be a first.

3.) I was the third person he has seen today with, you guessed it... Conjunctivitis! (that's long hand for "pink eye")



Anyway, the swelling has gone down a lot and looks more like this now


I have to take some antibiotic drops.
ABSOLUTELY NO over the counter drops like I did last night.
Oh, and stay away from the computer screen.

DUDE, I did just what my doctor told me to do. I called him first thing this morning and he said to come in at two. Not sure if that's what really happened. I just explained the pain and that was his conclusion. I've went strait to the emergency room before and had to wait just as long to see the doctor.

So, it boiled down to the 15 dollar co-pay vs. the 50 dollar co-pay.

damn HMO sucks.

That happens to me quite a bit cause my lashes are kinda long. It's soundz gross, but try lookin in da mirror to see where the lash is lodged! U might have to turn ur lid inside out for dat one!!! But trust me, it doenst hurt and it's worth it when u take dat prickly thing out!!

I had it last summer. It's highly contagious, so you need the drops in both eyes. I couldn't work for one day or two, since all I do is read and scribble.

A few moths ago I was bitten by a spider underneath my left eye, my left arm and my lower back. Very painful. They all got infected. The bite under my eye never healed properly. It left a scar, and it has flared up twice sense i was bitten. I went to the doc last thurs to find out why it never healed properly. Venom was still in the wound. They opened the wound up, injected a needle, and well lets just say, Im venom free (painful!!)
Under my eye is still a little red and irritated, but nothing compared to what the bite was.

You should not be here it is contagious. Now we are all going to catch it. There is some eye drops you can get at the pharmacy to treat it - no prescription needed, just ask for it. Don't scratch your eyes. When you wake up in the a.m. you may find your eyes glued together with dried puss. Use warm water with salt to wipe eyes. Soothing.

Anyway, yeah. I look hidious. I have my own office at work, so today I decided to make it an organization day and just close my door and listen to music. Just pick up all the projects around my office and file the ones that are done, organize my shelves and desk. Spray everything with Lysol. I might get back on the computer at the end of the day to fill out an invoice or two but that will be it. I got my i-tunes stocked with pleanty of tunes to last me the next few days.

Buuuut... your first post reminded me of a friend of mine. Years ago we all went to a strip-joint and he was up by the stage salivating over this one dancer. Throughout the evening we kept mentioning how his eye was getting all puffy. By the end of the night it looked like someone had popped him in the eye... he didn't care though, this dancer was giving him all kinds of attention. Anyway... the next morning his eye was the same... puffy, red around it, bloodshot. He said it felt like something was in there, and the first thing he thought of was an eyelash. It ended up he went to the doctor because it wasn't getting any better and was becoming itchy.

He had a crab in his eye. Yep... more than likely from that dancer.
