I have a question for you Pusherman:

if you are a serious cinephile (and that is impression that I got from your posts anyway), Why do you care so much about the Oscars?

Let´s face it, they are fun to watch but good cinema is very rarely recognized at this awards ceremony.

I dont realy care about the Oscars...But i feel intrigued to know what are the movie tastes of Prince fans...and actually how they feel about the 11 nominations of LOTR : ROTK (but now i am starting to figure out that there arent many prince fans here...but a few orgers that have multiple accounts that talk to themselves...)

I sure hope not. Lost In Translation is an excellent movie, but anybody that knows anything about filmmaking can see that in this movie it is all about the directing, the acting and the cinematography. The script really isn´t that impressive. I found this fact interesting when I saw LIT, since it is usually the screenwriting that is underappreciated and not the other way around.

Good choice. It´s awfully talky and Arcand´s narcissism shines through on more than one occasion, but it´s still one of the best movies of the year (any category).

Well...i do understand your point...but i read the Script way before i saw the film .....and i must say it is brilliant the way Sophia executed this film.....but the acadamy will not give her the trophy for directing just yet but i do think the academy will go for the fact she is the daughter of....and give her the honors.....And as for giving her the oscar for Film of the Year...that just wont happen....everyone knows that the film of the year will go to LOTR....and i dont thinbk it is for ROTK but for the whole trilogy.....what can you do ....POLITICS.... wink

no gonna go into all the noms but here are my ideas for the biggies:

Best Picture: Lord Of The Ring (Given)

Best Director: Peter Jackson (Given)

Best Actor: Sean Penn (Although it actually just might go to Bill Murray..But im sticking with my Bill Murray is the most hated man in Hollywood speech)..

Best Actress: Charlize Theron (Although Diane Keaton might win..And I might come back and change my guess before the big night...Why? Not because Diane is loved or is old and deserves the attention..Why? Simply because she is the only american in the running...This rule helped Morissa Tomie and a few other actresses win..Patriotism is patriotism)..

Supporting Actress: Shohreh Aghdashloo (The academy always has one shock winner..Think Tomie again, Adrian Brody, Halle Berry)..This is the only performance that seemed to get universal aclaim.....And how politically correct of the academy to give it to her....Sorry Renee Harvey cant buy you an Oscar this year....

Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins...Boring category

Adapted Screenplay: City of God (This thing didnt get all them nominations out of know where if it doesnt have the support of the academy)..

Original Screenplay: Lost In Translation

Song: Annie Lennox and the ten other people listed with her...How cool that this award is going to go to a non-disney nightmare of a song created by a old washed up pop star....its been either that or "lets honor a rock legend w/ an oscar even though the song was crap"...hopefully eminem's win last year was a sign of actually recognizing good songs that were effectively used within the film....hopefully...

Very Obvious choice...but i stick with Clint

Best Actor: Sean Penn (Although it actually just might go to Bill Murray..But im sticking with my Bill Murray is the most hated man in Hollywood speech)..
I do hope Bill Murray would win but the academy never gave a comedic perfomance an Oscar yet.....but the academy isfull of surprises andthis year it might jusy be Bill

I have seen the movie "Something's gotta give"....but sorry Diane was not prizeworthy in her performance....

On the contrary i think Harvey will buy her one this year.....

Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins...Boring category AGREE

Adapted Screenplay: City of God (This thing didnt get all them nominations out of know where if it doesnt have the support of the academy)..
But here again i have to give shouts out to Mystic River.....a Unique Script....I hope they dont give it to LOTR

Original Screenplay: Lost In Translation BRILLIANT

Song: Annie Lennox and the ten other people listed with her...How cool that this award is going to go to a non-disney nightmare of a song created by a old washed up pop star....its been either that or "lets honor a rock legend w/ an oscar even though the song was crap"...hopefully eminem's win last year was a sign of actually recognizing good songs that were effectively used within the film....hopefully...

no comment on my favorite screwed up category? best song lol

for me, it all started when Bagdade Cafe was slighted. How could "I Am Calling You" loose to Working Girls "Let the River Run"?

If you ask me.....I Am Calling You is by far the best use of a song in a movie..it created a mood...it created the perfect emotional thread.....it wasnt just a good song (which sadly is the case with the usual winners)..it was *part* of the film....

and while I havent seen Diane Keatons performance yet I gotta say her not acting well in the movie doesnt really matter..See poor Marisa Tomie.. lol

thank god she was soo good in "In The Bedroom"...Complety validated the fact that she is an Oscar Winner..Doesnt excuse the one note performance...

and speaking of "In The Bedroom"..remember when everbody thought Sissy Spacek was the clear winner two years ago? Something tells me that Charlize doesnt have it as sowed up as we think...I guess the SAG awards will give us a clue..Thats when Halle came out of know where and beat Sissy for her first win of the year..And who won the Oscar that year? Let me remind you: bawl

lol

I am sticking with Sean Penn.....
Sorry, Johnny, we know you made "Pirates" great all by yourself with that campy Keith Richards-turned-pirate performance that somehow also managed to be human. And sorry, Ben, nice job with the Iranian accent and cold, steely glare in "House of Sand and Fog." And, Jude, well, you gave the best performance in "Cold Mountain," and even had the most authentic Southern accent, even though Renee is from Texas. Yeah, sorry boys, but this is a two-man race. And, sadly, the wrong man will win. Penn screamed and cried and emoted his way through "Mystic River." He was really, really acting, so much in fact that he was the film's biggest distraction. When he came on screen, you knew you were watching a performance and it yanked you right out of the film. This, however, is what defines great acting by Academy standards, plus Penn hasn't won before and, heck, even Jude Law said he should win, so he will.

www.sagawards.com

Who Should Win: Bill Murray
On the flip side of Penn's style, there's Murray. Watch "Lost in Translation" and he makes it look effortless. You can't imagine it without him; the film simply wouldn't exist. His mixture of sadness, self-deprecating wit and exhaustion gives the movie not only its soul, but also its tone. Murray has been working toward this kind of mature performance in films like "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums" and, to a lesser extent, "Groundhog Day"; here, he's given room to explore emotions we haven't seen from him on screen. His final scene with Scarlett Johansson, one that is completely silent, is all done with facial expressions and body motions. Who knew Bill had it in him?

well, I finally got to see Lost in Translation this past weekend and I have fallen in love with this wonderful little movie. It is so subtle, ironic, funny, tender...I wish they made more movies like this, about human feelings, about love and feeling lost in life and not so many about elves and giants and rings and boring things like that wink

Bill Murray has to win Best Actor this year, period. He is GENIUS in it

And it is a shame that Scarlett Johansson is not nominated for LIT. When she and Murray are together , it is movie magic, I tell you

BEST PICTURE

  • THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
  • LOST IN TRANSLATION
  • MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
  • MYSTIC RIVER
  • SEABISCUIT

What Will Win: "THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING"

You almost felt when "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers" lost the past two years that the Academy was waiting to honor the entire "Lord of the Ring" saga. So, while in the history books, it will say "The Return of the King" won Best Picture in 2003, really, this trophy belongs to the whole series. Will it be stopped? Doubtful. It's already picked up several critics' awards, the Golden Globe for best drama and, recently, the British Academy Award for best film. That said, should it win? Well...

What Should Win: "LOST IN TRANSLATION"
I am putting on my chainmail and raising my shields to deflect the rocks that you're about to throw my way. Is "Lord of the Rings" the best series of all-time? No . It is a great Trilogy but there are better..... Is "Return of the King," as a stand-alone film, the strongest movie in this category? Sorry, but no. In fact, while still great, "King," wiith its emphasis on battles over personal relationships and, what, nine different endings is the most flawed film in the series. So, my pick for What should win Best Picture goes to Coppola's perfect, heart-wrenching jewel "Lost in Translation." Coppola's small dream film sustains a melancholy mood and atmosphere that lingers for weeks after seeing it. It's a staggering work of subtlety... and it only has one ending! But that ending -- ambiguous and poignant -- is the most lovely in recent memory.
