And here are some interesting facts:
THE SUNDANCE CONNECTION - Nine of the nominees premiered or played at the Sundance Film Festival in 2003. (American Splendor, Balseros, Capturing the Friedmans, The Cooler, In America, Pieces of April, Thirteen, The Weather Underground, Whale Rider) ONLY GOD KNEW -City of God surprised with 4 nominations. Very surprising considering it was eligible for Best Foreign Film LAST year and was not submitted. Good for director Fernando Meirelles, but STILL – 4 nods and nothing for Best Picture or Best Foreign Film. WHO SAYS YOU NEED THE MOST? -Cold Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, City of God and The Last Samurai either outperformed or tied Lost In Translation’s 4 nominations, yet none were nominated for Best Picture. WHO NEEDS ACTORS? -3 of the 5 Best Picture nominees did not receive a single acting nomination. BEGINNER’S LUCK? - 11 of the 20 acting nominees are first-timers. Believe it or not, Alec Baldwin, Patricia Clarkson, Johnny Depp, Bill Murray, Tim Robbins and Naomi Watts. Other newcomers include Shohreh Aghdashloo, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Djimon Hounsou, Charlize Theron and Ken Watanabe BEGINNER’S LUCK – PART TWO? - 7 of the 20 acting nominees were led to their nods by first-time directors. FORMER NOMINEES WITHOUT A TROPHY - Sean Penn grabbed his fourth nomination. Renee Zellweger grabbed her third in three straight years. Jude Law and Samantha Morton received their second. FRANKLY, THE ACADEMY DOESN'T GIVE A DAMN! - As expected, a woman was screwed in the nominations for Lost In Translation. But no it wasn’t Sofia Coppola who garnered nods for both writing and direction. Scarlett Johansson was shut out of both the lead and supporting categories for her work. NOMINATION TALLY: 11 – The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 10 - Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World 7 – Cold Mountain, Seabiscuit 6 - Mystic River 5 - Pirates of the Caribbean 4 – City of God, The Last Samurai, Lost In Translation Here I am, you lucky people!

I hope Sean Penn tows home the Oscar for Mystic River...
anyone who grew up around Boston knows that role all too well.. the movie itself was seriously flawed from over-editing. I wish they had left the original script alone.

LOTR doesn't have a shot in hell of sweeping, as it doesn't have two of the nominations it needs to sweep. a sweep is when a film wins in the following 4 categories: BEST PICTURE BEST DIRECTOR BEST ACTOR BEST ACTRESS only 3 films have ever swept: Silence of the Lambs, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and i forget the third, but it is an older movie. so there is no possible way LOTR will sweep as it doesn't have an actress or actor even nominated to be able to sweep. I am not so sure about the film being a year old and getting 4 noms. It is an incredible movie, I do not doubt that tho I have not seen it. But it could set a bad precedent down the line. Suppose an undeserving, otherwise-ineligible flick gets the nod next time? Or studios establish 2-year marketing plans for movies that miss the cut in their year of release? Maybe there is precedent for "City," and I will applaud it if it wins, but if this is the 1st time this has happened, the Academy's decision could open the floodgates. Great points, though, PusherMan. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Ok, ok but LOTR WILL win the most awards for one simple reason: the previous 2 parts were snubbed by the academy so this one, even if widely regarded as the weakest of the three, will be the big winner on oscarnight... Expect Peter Jackson to win best director... they can't NOT give it to him (I'm not a LOTR fan btw)

My picks are made out of partial ignorance, as I have not yet seen some of these flix.
BEST PICTURE THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING Too much mo to overcome. If Gladiator can win it, this movie can. ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE SEAN PENN - MYSTIC RIVER It's his time and his oppo to the Iraq war will help him with the Academy crowd. ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE TIM ROBBINS - MYSTIC RIVER Ditto for Tim. ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE [*]Charlize Theron - MONSTER I am pulling for Keisha, who was amazing, but the buzz on Charlize is too great to ignore and the short timeframe helps stave off a backlash. ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE [list] [*]Renée Zellweger - COLD MOUNTAIN She's been the bridesmaid too many times and this will be her reward. ANIMATED FEATURE FILM [*]THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE Haven't seen it, but why not pick an upset (tho "Nemo" was very good)? ART DIRECTION [*]THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING CINEMATOGRAPHY [*]MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD COSTUME DESIGN [*]THE LAST SAMURAI DIRECTING [*]THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING An overall "achievement award" for Peter Jackson in making an engrossing, consistent, and human blockbuster trilogy. DOCUMENTARY FEATURE [*]CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT [*]CHERNOBYL HEART FILM EDITING [list] [*]SEABISCUIT FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM [list] [*]THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS MAKEUP [list] [*]THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING MUSIC (SCORE)[list] [*]THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING MUSIC (SONG) [list] [*]"Into the West" - THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING SHORT FILM (ANIMATED)[list] [*]HARVIE KRUMPET SHORT FILM (LIVE ACTION)[list] [*]TWO SOLDIERS SOUND [*]THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING SOUND EDITING [*]MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD VISUAL EFFECTS [*]THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY) [*]AMERICAN SPLENDOR They'll give this movie some due credit. WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)[list] [*]LOST IN TRANSLATION Sofia's accomplishment almost makes up for messing up an otherwise good movie. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I have a question for you Pusherman:
if you are a serious cinephile (and that is impression that I got from your posts anyway), Why do you care so much about the Oscars? Let´s face it, they are fun to watch but good cinema is very rarely recognized at this awards ceremony.
