Ok, so after all these posts we still have only three non-american movies mentioned (La Femme Nikita, Pitch Black and Strictly Ballroom). Does that mean that nobody ever sees non-american movies or that you don´t like them?

Well, I thought Doberman was pretty cool. I recently saw Takishi Miike's Audition a few weeks ago which was really disturbing, quite an amazing piece of cinema. I would have also said Amores Perros but that was made in 2000 right? That was a great film.

Agree with most except StarShip Troopers but to each his own

I find myself watching these movies over and over

Almost Famous
Vanilla Sky

Starship Troopers was sooo bad it was funny! Doogie Howser dressed as a Nazi, doing a Vulcan mind-meld on a giant bug? Monstrous insects that shoot at asteroids...with their asses??? falloff

Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky were not from the 90s.

How come no one's listing Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace ?
I mean, come on - the pod race was very good and the light saber duel with Darth Maul was awesome! biggrin

I am no Sci Fi Buff ...but...what the...Phantom Menace realy sucked big time...and Clones was even worse...
As for Sci Fi ...I like Blade Runner , 2001 Space Odysee , Dune , Solarys (the original...) and Total Recall...

Well, I must disagree that Clones was worse than Phantom. Clones had some bad acting, but was otherwise pretty fun. Phantom Menace was majorly dissapointing, especially after waiting for so long, but I don't think its quite as bad as many people think. I think its just mediocre, which in some ways is even worse, because its not bad enough to mock.

I agree with all your choices for sci-fi, with the exception of Total Recall, which is bloody awful! Ah-nold butchering the plot of Phillip K Dick? No thank you.

OK...here is my ranking of my favorite Sci Fi...
1 - Blade Runner (1982)
2 - 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
3 - Alien (1979)
4 - Solyaris (1972)
5 - Dune (1984)

Total Recall was OK...i am not saying it was genius ...

Naah, it just means that european movies never has as high a budget as its american counterparts. That makes it harder for a director to do truly spectacular stuff, and so european movies are mostly dramas.
But Hardware - which is British, by the way - turned out rather spectacular despite a visibly low budget.
Nikita is fairly low-budget. You gotta give props to the directors in question for turning out a product that looks a LOT more expensive than it was.

So dramas are by definition not as good? In my book, there are thousands of "spectacular" dramas. I definitely prefer dramas over SFX spectacles. If you prefer sci-fi, that´s fine, but it´s kind of amusing the way you seem to take for granted that drama = bad.

Pitch Black is American. Isn't it?

No. There were some Americans working on it, but it´s an Australian movie.

No, I did not say dramas are bad, only that they are what european directors can afford to make.
Personally, I have many a favorite dramatic movie, but they're mostly from the 80'ies. Like My Beautiful Laundrette and Apartment Zero.
And there are dramas on my 90'ies list too, if you look real close. biggrin
