I wonder what the judge would've done if he had refused to read the letter out loud in the court room?

This reminds me of a judge we had in my city, supposedly before sentencing (black men) he would ask them to look out the window and for them to count the number of cars they seen parked on the street, whatever number that person came to that's how many years they got in prison.
