I just ate an animal !

I wanted a rice krispie treat and so I made them and ate one fully knowing that the marshmallows were made with gelatin (usually animal bone) and I'm really freaked out because I'm vegetarian and part of the reason is because I love animals and now I feel really guilty. sad
Have any of the other org vegetarians done something like this?

Well I'm starting to calm down...maybe it was a good experience for me to have that after being so strict with myself for a couple years..I was getting to a point that I was being a little..I don't know what word I want..just being puritanical about it almost.

Anxiety

I've been a veggie for 15 years, and yeah, it STILL happens to me - my concern is less the moral aspect (though there IS that, don't get me wrong) than just the simple fact that I don't wanna get sick from something I didn't know has beef or chicken stock in the ingredients.

I don't know a lot about how gelatin is prepared, or if it's a byproduct of a killed animal or that of a living animal (such as milk or honey) - I've always been fairly lax where this ingredient is concerned, because it is in almost EVERYTHING, and I haven't seen or heard much in the way of vegetarian & animal rights groups railing against the cruelty of the gelatin industry, so with those justifications I figure I'm in the clear...

In general though, I've gotten really good at reading labels before I buy stuff at the grocery. Sounds like a hassle, but once you get into the habit, it's no big inconvenience.

don't beat yourself up, conch - it happens, just like Anx said, sometimes you just don't know what's in something you ate.

now that you know about gelatin, it will be easy to avoid! oddly enough, many multi-vitamins are made with gelatin (no clue why it would be in there), so for years, i've been taking either vitamins specifically made for vegans, or Geritol.

you're doing great - don't let a little mishap throw you! hug

I would imagine they do have to kill it...I mean it's bone, right? I always read labels but I dunno why I went ahead this time. I dunno what you mean that gelatin is in almost everything, I have no trouble keeping clear of it..it tends to be in some desserts and junk foods (jelly beans, marshmallows, mousse, jell-o) but I pretty much avoid those anyway.. I prefer dark chocolate bars and Snickers (high protein as well smile

Oh well...I'll be okay. Thanks hug

I haven't tried them yet myself, but how bad could they be??? I found the site when we were going to make rice crispy treat as well, but they were sold out. You could try a "Whole foods" or whatever your local organic food store is also. They might carry a brand of these kinds of sweets in the store without having to go through mail order.

Fab Vegan Rice Krispie Treats

1 c. corn syrup
1 c. sugar
1 c. peanut butter
6-8 c. Rice Krispies
1 c. dark chocolate and/or peanut butter chips (optional)

Put the corn syrup, sugar, and peanut butter in a large saucepan. Heat until bubbly. Remove from heat and immediately stir in Rice Krispies (less if you like 'em gooey-er, more if you like them 'krispy'er). Smoosh into an oiled pan. Spread with chips while they are still hot, if you are so inclined. Let cool. Or, if you are impatient like me, don't, and burn your tongue.

These are even better than the traditional animal-based ones. I promise. smile

eww There are meat products from animals that are engineered without a central nervous system, so they don't feel pain. I've thought about that, but another of my own reasons is the health factor..maybe if I get married to a non-vegetarian I would use that in recipes though, to make them happy.

That looks like it would be good. I'm picky about what I like peanut butter in but I think I might try that...in fact I have almost all the ingredients...maybe later I'll run to the store and get the corn syrup. Thanks hug

how do they "make" an animal without a nervous system??? YUCKY! I am a vegetarian also because of health reasons. But the more I hear about things like animals with no nervous systems the more it is turning into because of the animals. The smartfood brand is all tofu products, but so is morning star brand hotdogs (they don't make "deli meat" though) and they are GREAT!! the only deal is they have to stay frozen until you are ready to cook them. We follow the directions on the initial cooking but then to make the skin crispy, we fry them in a pan. Tastes almost like they were grilled.

They can do amazing things these days in terms of genetic modification, etc. I don't think it's awful...The animal doesn't feel anything. It's great because it might cause more people to consider it who like "real" meat this more animal-friendly option.
I never really liked hot dogs but I've tried morning star I think it was the burgers..they're good smile

I guess I really didn't think of it like that. That is a good way of looking at it. do you generally just eat vegetables or do you eat "fake meat" products as well? We eat both at my house, but I know tons of people that won't eat the "fake meat" because it is too much like the "real" thing to them.

Yeah, true enough - I'm conscious of products that obviously have gelatin in them, and they're really not difficult for me to stay away from...not big on marshmallows, jell-o and the like...but like IrresistableBitch said, sometimes something as innocent-seeming as a vitamin will have gelatin...in cases like that, when I realize it after the fact, I just pretty much cut my losses and learn for the next time, and try not to beat myself up over it.

I've always found the definitions and origins of gelatin to be such a mysterious and non-specific thing. I guess common knowledge is that it comes from bone and cartilege, right?
