Why is a one cent coin a penny?

In the UK, we have pounds and pence. The one pence coin abbreviated to PENNY, the two pence coin abbreviated to TUPENNY, and the old three pence coin to THRUPENNY.

In the US Dollars and Cents, Why then is a one cent coin a penny? Surely it should be a CENNY.

At last an answer, all day I waited after Chris had his little chuckle.

Thanks Vi, although I am sure there must be a real reason.

This is not an American bashing thread. It is a genuine confuse thread

For those in the UK I've also been wondering, What's the difference between a pound, and a quid? And is a farthing an outdated term? Forgive my ignorance here.

A quid is a pound like a buck is a dollar.

A farthing was a quarter of 1p outdated following decimilisation I think

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
