It's supposed to drizzle here on Thurs and Fri. We need a good strong rain to clear the ashes away.

They're not. But they're better than nothing at all. It definitely is better to wet whatever you have over your face. The atmosphere is extremely surreal out here. If you're not directly involved with any fires it's really like watching hell go on from the orange/grey glow on the other side. And I'm not being facetious when I say that. I was using a wet bandana yesterday. Today it smells fine outside, but they said on the news that we should still cover our faces. I put my bandana up to my face and it smelled like smoke! I guess it worked yesterday! Now I gotta wash it. My boyfriend works at Borders and their air conditioning is so screwed up, it was bringing the smoke in. He said it's all hazy in there and they are letting people go home without penalty and closing early anyway. Here's that yellow/grey glow: Creepy.

That may come across a little selfish. I want all to be ok and safe. It just when you hear stuff like this the first thing you do is worry about friends and family. You are lucky. I'm really bummed right now that the fire is getting really close to Julian. It's a cute, historial mountain town. Places like Laguna and Palomar are being evacutaed. These are places we go when we want to go to the mountains and "get away from it all". Lake Cuyamaca is 95% gone. That's where I went for sixth grade camp. I know people have lost loved ones and more have lost everything they own...it's just heartbreaking to see every aspect of how this affects the whole county. So many animals and horses are in shelters right now. I cried when they cut the trees down in our courtyard. (I was home while they were cutting them down piece by piece, right outside my window. The chainsaws were so loud and the ground would shake as each piece fell to the ground.) I can just imagine the next time my boyfriend and I want to go take a drive out in the country and realize it's not there anymore. It will grow back in a few years I guess. I almost want to go next month and mourn.

Now take that yellow gray glow and imagine it is on the ground! When I walked out of my mom's in Central Orange County on Saturday it was like walking into a war zone. If you were to look outside, you might have thought it was foggy. It was the smoke and ash. I grew up in this area and have lived her my whole life and I've never seen anything this bad. I went to some beach cities and they were just as bad, I had to rent a hotel room near LAX cuz I couldn't breathe. How sad for all the people that died and lost their homes. Anybody who would intentionally light fires like this deserves to be burned alive themselves. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Girl, it's time for you to get out of there! This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I'm not in Julian, you silly butt! Thanks for caring. I just don't want that town to be destroyed. We already lost Cuyamaca. I love camping and going to the mountains.

I feel for everybody who lives out there. I just called my aunt who lives in Hemet, CA yesterday and she is like 85, so I was really worried about her. The air quality is the big thing out there right now for her. HORRIBLE.
My uncle had to evacuate (I don't remember where he lives) and it's just awful. His house was ok I think but MAN. I have some other family out there as well as a few friends.

My friend lives in San Bernadino and is packed and waiting evacuation orders. He said that this is the most devastating thing with all of the mountain forests burning and wildlife loss. He was talking about the ash covering everything and that they can't breathe and have intense burning of the eyes. Also, that it is difficult to get supplies and money because everything is closed much of the time. He spoke about some people dying in their cars because they became disoriented in the smoke and drove the wrong way. There are fires all around him but autorities are trying to evacuate in an orderly method due to the freeways being either closed or jammed. I am very concerned because I haven't heard from him in two days. Please be safe Vina, Supa, Chico and all our other org friends who live here, Many prayers for all of you.
