I don't do cars either! But could it be related to the emision of lead from your exhaust pipe? It sounds vaguely familiar.

I never wanted to learn how to be a mechanic. I am an artist. I might dirty my nails if I get under the hood of the ride.

I dont have any family members that are mechanics but the guy who did the smog check recommended a place to me to take my car, a test has to be performed and it's gonna cost me $89, just for a freakin test.

I dunno a lot about cars but I would imagine the problem is that the air coming out of your exhaust is too dirty. Maybe they're testing to see if they need to put in a stronger filter (for environmental reasons).
There are books out there on this stuff with average estimates. There's probably even websites you can go to to ask good mechanics. Look around, google. You could even contact your local Better Business Bureau (however that's spelled) for an honest mechanic. It's in the phone book. If the problem is what I said I think it is, then you might even be breaking EPA federal laws on emissions standards! Couldn't hurt to get this worked on pretty fast. Good luck

I'm not sure whether it's the same in each country, but the emission test usually checks levels of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, smoke and excessive noise. In other words, it ensure cars comply to pollution control measures in your country.
