Some vegetarian/vegan products taste barf I'd rather just not eat the rice krispies if they do. I learnt my lesson with the vegan american cheese slices and with tofu. Icky.
I'll check it out though; thank you smile

I totally agree!!! We once tried the "smartfood" brand of hotdogs and deli meat Can we just talk about how the "deli meat" was GREEN!!! since when is fake turkey and chicken and bologna GREEN!!! and the hotdogs were all rubbery and slimey!! SOOO GROSSS

eww There are meat products from animals that are engineered without a central nervous system, so they don't feel pain. I've thought about that, but another of my own reasons is the health factor..maybe if I get married to a non-vegetarian I would use that in recipes though, to make them happy.

how do they "make" an animal without a nervous system??? YUCKY! I am a vegetarian also because of health reasons. But the more I hear about things like animals with no nervous systems the more it is turning into because of the animals. The smartfood brand is all tofu products, but so is morning star brand hotdogs (they don't make "deli meat" though) and they are GREAT!! the only deal is they have to stay frozen until you are ready to cook them. We follow the directions on the initial cooking but then to make the skin crispy, we fry them in a pan. Tastes almost like they were grilled.

They can do amazing things these days in terms of genetic modification, etc. I don't think it's awful...The animal doesn't feel anything. It's great because it might cause more people to consider it who like "real" meat this more animal-friendly option.
I never really liked hot dogs but I've tried morning star I think it was the burgers..they're good smile

I guess I really didn't think of it like that. That is a good way of looking at it. do you generally just eat vegetables or do you eat "fake meat" products as well? We eat both at my house, but I know tons of people that won't eat the "fake meat" because it is too much like the "real" thing to them.

Basically my diet is this:
in the morning I have an egg white omelet (6 eggs worth) with vegetables inside (usually potatoes, onions, mushrooms, cooked in olive oil) from hens that are free-roaming, no hormones, etc etc. that gives me about 60 percent of my daily protein right there. add a glass of skim milk and some whole wheat bread with a little butter on (great recipe right here: http://www.cooks.com/rec/...98,00.html )
lunch is usually a sandwich on that same whole wheat bread, different vegetables inside (romaine lettuce, tomato, always smoked gouda cheese- yummy!, and an herbed olive oil dressing for moisture) and a half of a fruit smoothie (the whole one is one cup milk, one container of strawberry-banana yogurt [all animal-friendly ingredients], a banana, a little vanilla extract, and some flax seed oil [has omega-3 fatty acids you normally get from fish])
then i have the rest of that smoothie later (the whole one is big and filling)
for dinner it's whatever i happen to like, but i make sure to include a good amount of vegetables (i love yams/sweet potatoes and they're pretty close to the perfect vegetable nutritionally)
throughout the day i have small snacks, like peanut butter on sliced apple, or dark chocolate (which actually has a lot of healthy antioxidants)
if you get your daily amount of calcium from milk, you're also getting about 40 percent of your protein at the same time. that with the omelet (60 percent) and i'm set in that respect.

so you can see that i have a pretty balanced and healthy diet (as if you bothered to read that whole thing! smile

I would imagine they do have to kill it...I mean it's bone, right? I always read labels but I dunno why I went ahead this time. I dunno what you mean that gelatin is in almost everything, I have no trouble keeping clear of it..it tends to be in some desserts and junk foods (jelly beans, marshmallows, mousse, jell-o) but I pretty much avoid those anyway.. I prefer dark chocolate bars and Snickers (high protein as well smile

Oh well...I'll be okay. Thanks hug

Yeah, true enough - I'm conscious of products that obviously have gelatin in them, and they're really not difficult for me to stay away from...not big on marshmallows, jell-o and the like...but like IrresistableBitch said, sometimes something as innocent-seeming as a vitamin will have gelatin...in cases like that, when I realize it after the fact, I just pretty much cut my losses and learn for the next time, and try not to beat myself up over it.

Yeah I hadn't thought about the vitamin thing. eek

I've always found the definitions and origins of gelatin to be such a mysterious and non-specific thing. I guess common knowledge is that it comes from bone and cartilege, right?

I think so...apparently sometimes it's vegetable-derived, but that doesn't seem to be common.

I did read the whole thing actually. You have a better diet than I that is for sure! I eat alot of pasta and potatoes and salads. I don't know how to cook and have found that I start more fires than anything else so I avoid the stove if I can. Other than boiling water I mean. Thankfully for me I don't live alone. Plus my mother is helpful in the respect that she will try out vegetarian reipes for me and then send them home for me to taste. As you can tell I am not starving to death, but I don't have a very healthy diet. That is mostly why I am a vegetarian.

Yeah, I mean even Altoids have gelatin in them, so it's not difficult to accidentely eat something with animal products in it. In fact, I just read that they put ground up snails in a lot of things. bawl

It'd be cool if there was a vegetarian "consumer reports" that gives heads-up to products that we wouldn't think have animal products in them, but actually do. I've also always thought the idea of a vegetarian food critic who wrote reviews about local eateries (read: not just specialty veggie joints) would be a cool idea.
