Can anyone recommend any good graphic novels?

I'm currently in full swing in my comic renaissance and I'm pleased to find that there is a lot of good quality writing in comics again. I tend to go for the trade paperbacks nowadays as I don't have time to hunt down past issues in a store sigh (ah the good ol' days)

Can any of you recommend your favorites? I was thinking about getting "Mr. Punch" and "Signal to Noise" by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean worship . Also "WatchMen" and "Crisis on Infinite Earths" are definitely on my list as I've never read them *ducks head* boxed May my fellow fanboys forgive me pray mr.green

Other favourites include V for Vendetta, and all the great Batman ones like Arkham Asylum and Year One.

If you like 2000AD you could do worse than dig up stuff like Sláine the Horned God, Ballad of Halo Jones, Song of the Surfer, all the old Dredd stuff like Necropolis etc.

Thanks for the recommendations Ian. I'd read Arkham Asylum and that's just one of the best Batman stories ever written. A classic. I'll also check out the others on your list as well. I'm a sucker for well written and well drawn graphic novels.

Slighty off-topic, but years ago I read a magazine article about a forthcoming comic based on a whole load of super-heroes when they were old. It looked quite interesting.

Unfortunately I was reading this in my local Indian takeaway, and they're very fast so I never finished the article. And I can't remember the name of the comic (or anything else! boxed)

Can anyone shed any light on this? Was it ever produced, or was I drunk?

The Crow by James O'Barr is still one of the most powerful things I've ever read. All props to the dearly-departed Brandon Lee but the movie didn't pack near the emotional wallop this graphic novel did.

"Batman--The Dark Knight Strikes Again"--Amazing. I didn't think Frank Miller could surpass himself, but he did. And you get to see Superman and Wonder Woman fuck.

"Preacher Vols 1-9"--possibly the best comic series ever written. Simply unbelievable.

Cool I didn't know they reproduced the Crow in a graphic novel format. I'd not read Preacher when it came out. Is it still being produced? Good picks. My list is getting bigger big grin

I did read Batman TDKSA. I liked it but The Dark Knight Returns is just so damn beautiful. It gets me everytime.

Uhm, ah.. Peter David's The Last Avengers Story (2-part book-shelf from '94 or '95, I forgot the actual title)? biggrin

Or perhaps DC's Kingdom Come which ripped it off? biggrin

I am aware that for some strange reason that continues to escape me, Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum is considered a classic, but I think it is overrated biggrin
Certainly, I read my copy and gave it away afterwards with no hesitation. I thought it was crap. No, really. I did. biggrin

Yes, Miller and Mazzucchelli's Batman: Year One is VERY good - and it doesn't hurt that Mazzucchelli draws some HOT looking men. See also their Daredevil: Born Again biggrin

"Born Again" was sooo great!!! Very inspiring, too. I haven't read Marvel comics since the early '90s, but is it true that Wilson Fisk (the Kingpin) is now dead?

You never go wrong with classics like X-Men Visionaries: Neal Adams, The Avengers: The Kree-Skrull War by selfsame Adams, The Life And Death Of Captain Marvel by Jim Starlin, Captain Britain (1988 trade) by Alan Davis, or anything written by Chris Claremont. biggrin

How in the hell could I forget Jim Starlin?! He was amazing. I love all his Adam Warlock/Thanos stories. He's definitely going on my list. Thanks Scifi.

Indeed, that was a great one. I was a fan of the artwork, and the way the brought characters from the past in.
