why is violence more acceptable then sex? In the mid 70's & 80's it seemed as if America was going through some kind of sexual revolution. It was all about Making' Love and not war all while accommodating the very promiscuous, provocative letting it all hang out in any which way you can attitude. Women more then ever where in control of the sexual inhabitations, they no longer had 2 deal with the "waiting til marriage" status, because they had more birth control options other then just the average condom, more available to them, so there was no fear in getting laid .
It seems as if we where getting ahead of this whole sexuality landmark , it was in the music, style of clothes and even in movies, however. Somewhere in the early Aids has always been around, but in the past it was known as a gay disease, people where still going about even though it was around. Yeah we all knew of the kid who (was a Michael Jackson fan) and was diagnosed with aids at early, but it wasn't until the early 90's until it finally registered in our minds, we all could get infected no matter, what race, creed or color. It stroke a fear during that time, most people became aids awareness with either talking about it openly or wearing a red ribbon (that wasn't just a fashion statement) ... however. The backlash of that epidemic was people became less sexual and violence seemed to take the place where the sexual revolution left off. You would think, in a time where we have more educational options about sex and more birth control methods/protection, we would be more sexually opened, then we where sometime back in the 70's or 80's. Even without aid mentioned or any std's in the topic, it seems as if violence is more socially acceptable, then sex. Now I do believe to a certain degree sex can be overrated, however. I don't think there's nothing wrong with sex per say it’s the most natural thing shared between 2 people, yet we still are ashamed 2 talk about it with family members or in some cases our children. There's everything wrong with violence, there can be no justification for it, yet we allow ourselves to be entertained by it and we tend to be more opened minded about it, then about sex(Isn't that ironic?). Even if you mentioned the word people will start to give you a dirty look like, you slut... where on the other hand if we talk about what we saw on jackass last night, people give you respect... mmmh isn't that ironic ? What about violent sex?

As for violence being not so 'hot' in the 70-ies and 80-ies two important things: US was kicked their arse in the war in Vietnam and the world was living in a freezing hell called the Cold War.
The idea of a worldwide destructive war with atomic weapons was much more real than today. Since this destruction was so real (Prince took much inspiration from this - 1999 and Crystal Ball) people didn't want to see much violence in movies and tv. Sex - as in make love not war (anti-Vietnam war theme) - was regarded as the best alternative. Increase in HIV infections in the late 80-ies and 90-ies (in other words sex is not a safe option) and the fact that the US was no longer threadened by any other country switched the coin. Violence was harmless - only far away - so could be portrayed in movies again. Only the future can tell how terrorism will play a role in this...

I tend to blame organized religions, most of which condone violence to initially gain power and then to compel submission by their followers. Sex, on the other hand, is liberating. It's no wonder to me that, broadly speaking, European societies are less religious and more open about sexuality than America. *****************************************

less religious or more catholic? May sound like a strange question but I think the catholics in the street (not the Pope, he is weird) are quite loose in their moral stands... much more than the reformed and protestant organizations. And in the US you see much more of those fundamentalistic Christian groups... I tend to agree though with your view on the effect of organized religions on the matter of sex vs. violence

I don't think Europe is less religious at all. True. Southern Europe generally is very religious - the further south you go, the more religious the people (usually Catholic). But Northern Europe - not very religious, really. No. FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!

I think we accept violence more, such as on tv and all, because when we watch it, we can say to our kids, "see, this is happening because" ..or "this is the bad guy, this is the good guy" or even " see, these choices led to this". With sex, once again on tv, we don't have lines as clearly drawn. if a kid sees two people having sex, the discussion is much more difficult about whether someone should wait to have sex, etc.
I think parents are just afraid that talking about it may be taken as "go do it", or they are afraid their kid will go to school and talk about their dad's bits and pieces...
