LONDON (Reuters) - Some Londoners do not want showman David Blaine to succeed in his bid to spend 44 days without food in a glass box suspended from a crane in the centre of the capital.

Since the American began his stunt on Friday he has been pelted with eggs, taunted with the smell of fish and chips and woken up by a man banging a drum.


Police said on Tuesday officers had been called in to deal with one man who was throwing eggs at Blaine's transparent box late on Monday evening.

"The man was given a stern talking to. But he was not arrested," a police spokesman said.


The 30-year-old New Yorker is used to drawing admiring crowds for his other feats in the United States, including being buried alive and encased in a block of ice.


But newspapers said some Londoners were devising ways of breaking the American's spirit, saying they were already bored with his latest challenge.


"We were watching him at home on TV and it was really dull so we thought we would come down and liven things up. I wanted to wake him up," impromptu drummer Shiraz Azam, 21, told London's Evening Standard on Monday.


The stunt is also causing traffic problems with motorists driving across the city's Tower Bridge slowing down to take a look.

A megaphone-toting protester gave illusionist David Blaine a full blast as the celebrity entered the fifth day of his stunt.

Student Daniel Bidewell, 24, from Blackheath, London, told Blaine: "There are people starving in the world because they cannot afford food and you are being applauded for going without it. Has the world gone mad?"

Laid-back Blaine heard him, smiled and raised two fingers in the "peace" gesture.

The shoeless student told Blaine: "People in the West spend more money trying to lose weight than those in the Third World spend on food. You are doing this purely to promote your own ego."

Blaine waved back and was applauded by the 150 onlookers.

The magician's 44-day endurance feat is being met with bemusement and annoyance, as well as support from passers-by.

East German student Maike Lehmann from Halle, told TV Plus: "It is stupid because he wants to get attention and earn money."

Bill Holden from Los Angeles said: "He makes his living as an illusionist so there has to be a trick. There are several tubes and bags in the box with him and they are there for a reason."

The majority of visitors to Blaine's glass box regard it as a legitimate piece of performance art.

Retired Stan Loring from Sidcup, London, told TV Plus: "The reasons he is doing this don't matter to me. It is something to come and see. Why not just spend an hour down here?"

aaww poor baby. who cares if ppl eat in front of him, it was his stupid idea to do that boring trick. did he think everyone was going to sit there in awe while the 'oh so great' David Bland sat up there on purpose. they're not being thoughtless, they're just having fun
