Your First Childhood Memory What was it?
I think my first memory is from going to the dentist's office to have my teeth cleaned--must've been about 3 or 4 yrs old, I'd guess. When I got home, I in the driveway cause I'd swallowed some of the fluoride they'd given me. What's the first memory you have?

Mine's not good.
I remember this like it just happened. I couldn't have been older than 4 because my dad was still living with us and he left us when I was barely 4. My first memory was of my dad beating up my mom. I remember getting out of bed because I heard my mom crying and I walked into the hallway to see my dad slap my mom in the face and her glasses went flying into the bathtub. I screamed at my dad to stop hitting my mom and he looked at me and just shut the door in my face. Well my hand happened to be in the way of the door and he shut the door on my fingers. I screamed out crying and I will never forget this, the door swung open and both my parents were looking at me with concern. Of course my mother was concerned but being that my dad was kicking my mom's ass in front of me, you'd think he could care less. But in that fleeting moment he did. I asked him why he shut the door on my fingers and he said he didn't do it and that my mom did. I told him no and that I saw him do it. With that he shut the door and continued to beat up my mom... This memory still haunts me... 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I'm sorry, Supa...
It's amazing how parents try to pretend that because they're doing things in the other room that children don't know what's happening. The vicarious trauma inflicted can be personality/life altering.

I'm happy to say that my parents are friends today and that my dad is a different man. I have a great relationship with both and have pretty much forgiven my dad and realized that he reaped all the karma he could handle and then some. Believe me he paid. And because he did, I realized that it's pointless for me to make him pay some more. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Dental Memories! Another very early memory of mine involved the dentist too! When I was 5 my front teeth were knocked out in an accident at the park and one of my teeth was hanging and the dentist had to pull it and stitch my gums (all 4 teeth were knocked out at once). So I was sitting in the chair and looking up at the dentist and he had a poster of Superman directly above on the ceiling. He asked me if I liked superman and as I said yes he brought a needle from behind and stuck it in the roof of my mouth...without painkiller first!!! Try taking your fingernail or something sharp and poke the roof of your mouth as hard as you can stand it. Now just imagine a needle going all the way through!!! I've been freaked out and afraid of the dentist ever since... 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I'm not clear of the "first," but I have several from the age of three (based on the house we lived in for one year at that age.) Most vivid is being in the backyard, my Dad picking something up to find a tarantula underneath. Ick. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

My first vivd memory is of Ted Kennedy coming to my home town, a very small town in California, this was in 67 or 68. I know this because he made a joke saying "Hi I am Robert Kennedy" and that everyone laughed, I was being held up by my Godbrother who is about 6'5" 280. We were outside at a park standing under trees. Ted looked right at me and winked...
later I remember the night Martin Luther King Jr. died and then I remember when Robert Kennedy was killed because I asked my mom if his brother was with him...I was 3 and then 4. I also have the memory of the night we got our first dog, he was a German shepherd puppy my brother brought him home in a shoe box and begged and cried and pleaded with my parents to keep him. When I saw him crying I cried too and we stood there in the kitchen crying for this puppy. He was 12 I was about 2 and when my daddy saw how upset I was he said yes we'll keep the puppy. My brother named him Lucky because he was the only one my dad let him keep. This memory is cloudy but I heard the story so much it made me remember the shoe box was from sears for some work boots. We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Maya Angelou
