favorite comic book?

past or present.

mine.

past:

the unprecedented 16 year Chris Claremont run on the "Uncanny X-Men"

present:

not coincidentally, Chris Claremont's "X-treme X-Men" (though it has a horrible, horrible title). yes, i'm an old-fashioned kind of guy, that thinks there should be some actual "reading" involved in reading a comic book.

Well...

*past*

I used to love Ghost Rider, in fact the first (non-kiddie) comic I ever bought was The Original Ghost Rider #3 (it was a reprint series Marvel put out in the 90's). I started reading X-Men with issue #33, and Wolverine at issue #66.

*present*

Since moving to Illinois almost 2 years ago, I haven't really read many comics (I only recently found the local comic shop boxed )

I have to say tho, that I really liked the 'Origin' comic (the real origin of Wolverine). I got it when they released it as a trade. I'm looking forward to the sequal nod

are they doing a sequel?

you should check out the "Wolverine: The End" mini-series in a few months. according to Marvel, Origin and The End are going to be bookends to his whole life.

My all time favorite is the Claremont/Byrne era for Uncanny
X-Men. It's just great storytelling. I also quite enjoyed Paul Smith's run.

I always liked Neil Gaiman as a writer, so I liked the Sandman series and his graphic novels, although I can't remember the name of the artist that I liked the most that illustrated many of them.

There was a comic called "Gregory" about a nearly mute 6 or 7 year old who lived in an insane asylum in a padded room with a rat and a cockroach for a friend that I really liked too.

Milk and Cheese is a classis, as is Tank Girl.

And I liked Love and Rockets for a while too.

I haven't looked at a comic book in quite a while though. I'll have to head to my local comic store. biggrin

Aside from Uncanny X-Men, I like graphic novels like The Dark Knight Returns, Arkham Asylum (Dave McKean's art is awesome), Elektra: Assassin and Cages (McKean). And Dave Sim's early Cerebrus is just plain funny. There's a lot of good books with great art and stories among all the junk that passes for comics these days.
BTW, has anyone ever read Stray Toasters by Bill Sienckewicz (sp)? I've been trying to hunt down those issues for years but have never found them.

Oh yeah! How could I leave out The Sandman. Good choice. "Brief Lives" is among my favorites as well.

YES! Dave McKean is the Man!!! His covers for Sandman are the best. Have you read Cages? It's all done by him. It's pen and ink mostly but it's incredible stuff. Pick it up if you get the chance. Violent Cases is also on par with his Arkham Asylum art. It's about a boy who meets Al Capone's osteopath and his recollection about that meeting. It's pretty disturbing but still cool.

omg Claremont's responsible for Extreme X-Men?! disbelief I stayed away from the other X-titles (there's too many) aside from Uncanny. How is it? Other than Uncanny, I don't know what the hell's going on in the other books.

I haven't. I'll have to pick that up soon. Wow! I forgot how much I loved comics.

My very first roommate in my very first apartment introduced me to all that stuff around 9 years ago or so. I just read all of his. I picked up a few Neil Gaiman graphic novels over the years, but I haven't really been in a comic book store since. I think I'm stopping on my way home tonight.

Thanks for the suggestion!

No problem. Have fun! smile

I think I'm gonna do the same and head down to the comic book shop. I'll resume my search for Bill Sienkewicz's "Stray Toasters" sigh pray or other comics/graphic novels.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to new comics I should get into? I'm a bit out of the loop with the new stuff.

of the 4 mainstream Marvel Universe titles with the word "X-Men" in them (wich includes Uncanny, New, X-Treme, and Unlimited, but not Ultimate), Uncanny is one of THE TWO that you should NOT read. Unlimited being the other...

X-treme is Claremont doing what Claremont does, which is to the liking of some, and not to the liking of others.

Uncanny is written by Chuck Austen, and has the vibe of the commercial/ultra-angsty/soap-oper-y/boring/cliched/nauseating 90's X-books

New X-Men is Grant Morrison's book, and has become the flagship title of the X-books. it's also very good, and weird, and neat, and cool. i like it a lot. but i like Claremont's X-treme X-Men better.
