"Just because whites can't experience racism

"Just because whites can't experience racism"

on an econimical level (usually, not always), does that mean other forms of racism we may recieve is not important or should go unnoticed?
Yesterday I ran up the sidewalk to drop some Blockbuster videos into their return tray. There's a guy on a bike coming, I anticipated him swerving to my right, since the return tray was on my left. No, he keeps going, so I almost cause him to crash, but I step aside and he brakes, looking back at me with a big scowl. My heart is still beating from what was almost a collison so I say "I'm so sorry, I thought -" and I'm cut off with him saying "Silly fucking white fag." Then he rode off. (For note, he was black)

Is that supposed to not bother me??? Cuz it did.

Sorry to hear that. hug
And all people of all colours experience racism. Just shows how ignorant people can be. You apologized and no one was hurt. Obviously he had a chip on his shoulder and let it out on you. sad

Soapstone

Only encountered it once in a similar blatant verbal insult. It was shocking, but just made me smile; I didn't really think it was "racist". You have to feel a little sorry for someone who has to stoop so low to muster a pathetic insult (or should I say pathetically obvious statement). Were you more bothered about the "fag" or the inclusion of the word "white"?

What the fuck was he doing riding on the pavement (sidewalk) anyway?

pulls out his soapbox and climbs on it

There are many types of racism and discrimination. The problem is that when we (especially in America) discuss racism we are inclined to think of the systematic racism of a majority of white people towards every other race which, although undeniably still goes on, has been declared unacceptable by our society as a whole. People who want to openly purvey this kind of racism are seen as factional and ignorant. But simpler person to person group to group racism will probably never be absolved because skin color is an easy thing to see. If you're going to attack someone verbally it's one of the most obvious things you can go after, and on top of that every race has a nice array of slanderous terms that can be applied to it. The thing I think it interesting was that you were offended by being called "white" by a black man, but not so offended by being called "fag" by a straight man. The person who did this to you was obviously a jerk, whether or not he is a racist is up in the air because my guess is he just spat the first insult he could come up with at the quick glance he had. Anyone who is in the business of insulting other people on the street do similar things. Just remember karma, and think also how miserable he must be to be that negative all the time.

I used to experience alot of racist comments and I am white-ish, well I am white, but more swarthy...oh fuck! I havent a clue what I am err but fact of the matter is, some ignorant people can only judge by colour and include colour and race in their angry mouthing off at another...

pissed

btw, some of the racist comments I got were Re: white people, others were Re: Indian people, others were Re: Spanish/Italian/Turkish etc...em...I think you get me...but nobody has a fucking clue what I look like so they will just say any race or colour...

I've been called "honky" and "cracker" before, right here in NYC. So every race gets the bullshit.

Every race does get shit on...

BUT, the impact and meaning of "nigger" is not comparable to any other racial insult IMO.

To directly answer your question though...such comments should bother you and yes it is important.

Stop people. Especially my American friends.

Are we talking "Racism" or "Colourism"?

Its seems a great deal of American confuse the two. "Racism" is not based on colour, but race. Be it American, Iraqi, English, Irish, whatever.

"Colourism" is hating for the colour of skin.

Jews face "Racism", African Americans face "Colourism".

On a slightly different subject. Can I ask black friends in here whether you think black musicians using the term "nigger" between each other is a good or a bad thing.

Good? A term of bonding?

Bad? Sending a message to an increasing white audience that its an acceptible everyday term for someone black?
