And Just Like That (Sex and the City reboot thread)

This thread will contain spoilers!

And Just Like That has new episodes on HBOMax every Thursday. As of this posting, the first two are on HBOMax.

Can us fans of Sex and the City talk about the reboot, And Just Like That???

First, I'm glad the rhythm and cadence of the original show is there. The humor, the sarcasm, the jokes. THE FASHION! I love the new characters: the professor, the cool chick, the grown children (or almost grown). It does feel like it picks up in the timeline. It feels natural.

They addressed Samantha a few times in the first episode. Right, right off the bat, then a bit later (almost seemed shady, taking virtual pieces of conversation that SJP & Kim Catrall had about their non-friendship). She's also mentioned, on paper, in the second episode. They were kind to her, and didn't have to be. But then again, why feed into the cat fight anymore?

The ending of episode one - total shocker. Some may have seen it in the press (or not?), but I stay away from anything about a show like this before it premiers. Same with a movie. I wanna go in fresh. So I sorta skip interviews and gossip for that reason.

So, what do you think about the first two episodes?

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I liked it but I did find a few things awkward (like Miranda's eulogy... it was... oddly worded and oddly... spaced... I guess for... dramatic... affect?) but all in all it was cute to see the ladies again even if my favorite one (Samantha) isn't there.

.

They did a good job with everyone's kids, it wasn't jarring to re-situate with Charlotte and Miranda as parents. I hope the kids have a strong presence during the series as I did enjoy the banter, the woke girlfriend, the weirdo and the piano prodigy.

.

I never thought Stanford and Anthony were a "good couple" just tossed together randomly, that also translates here. Just weird. Going on apps at a kids piano recital but still a couple.

.

I wasn't really feeling the podast subplot or the Miranda as student subplot but it'll be interesting to see where both go.

I agree with much of what you said.

It does seem awkward with Standord and Anthony. However, we have to think that for season two, there'll be another funeral since Willie has passed away. And gay people have open relationships. The app thing wasn't unusual, but at the recital it seemed like "why?"

The podcast thing feels like a natural extension for someone who used to write articles. Who's reading newspapers anymore? But they still read books, listen to audio books and podcasts. It's modern day, as the show has always been. I feel like if Miranda was doing it, it would've been more in line with her having a self-journey is race theory and social justice issues. But we'll see where that goes.

Miranda did say the eulogy was written by Carrie, didn't she? Maybe that's why. I thought about even the funeral being super modern and a fashion show. All white room, white chairs, everyone in black. Very stark.

I plan to rewatch both episodes this weekend.

I do like seeing folks grown up, in their lives, doing new things, getting to know the kids, etc.

The "She's not with us" felt normal, but the conversation later about her felt more personal from SJP. But it was a good rounded moment when it showed Samantha bought the flowers, but still didn't answer a text. I don't think she ever will, because it shady-adjacent reflects Kim's attitude toward SJP in real life. I think maybe they'll talk about the missing connection there another time or two, then let it go for good. Grief, on every level, is a journey, which is what episode 2 was all about.

Well, it's only 44 minutes, and it came out yesterday.

I'm actually rewatching both again, right now.

And just like that, with the fuss with Peloton, their stock temporarily dropping, they've bounced back with something even more clever.

No reason you shouldn't be able to watch it. They premiered both episodes. On mine, they're still there.

My biggest take from Episode 3 is that there were extended periods of silence in this episode which should have been occupied by Carrie's thoughts and instead were just left silent.

.

I wonder if it was intentional to kind of go with her current state of mind. I kept waiting for her inner monologue to chime in with some more insight but just got silence instead.

I think you answered your own question. I believe her inner monologue would've just been too much. It was the pain on her face, the awkward situations (finding Natasha in the bathroom, then the ensuing moment in the coffee shop), that's what told her story. The running around the apartment, sorta finding out about the husband by going through his things. There's punctuation of humor to lighten that up (the phone number calling home, seeing Natasha through a window and having no where to hide).

But her just walking, and walking, and figuring things out, trying to work off her grief physically rather than just be in bed for days on end (like in the movie) with an endless monotone monologue was much more effective, for me. On the other end, her calling Miranda and just sorta venting, and Miranda trying to balance her home life w/ being there for her friend - we've all been there. That was a good scene.

"She just blocked me on Instagram."
"What? Well then she's a fucking bitch."

When she was sitting in the coffee shop, and Natasha was wrestling with whether to talk to her at all or not, yelling at her, embarrassing her in the midst of Carrie's grieving and searching, then having a bit of mercy on her (and her burn), her realizing Big and her hadn't talked in years... the questions and pain on her face told that story. The silence was deafening.

The inner monologue sometimes has a quirky or sarcastic tone to it, and this wasn't that show.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the series.

I liked it, all in all. Miss the inner monologues though.

.

I hope they do a second season, they seem pretty lined up to do so.
