What the heck is the Grinch?

I mean is that his name or his species? He's not a Who, as in Cindy Lou. That danged family owns the whole town? What's his origin story?

He was raised by the Whos (two sisters) after having been abandoned as an infant. But I don't think he was a Who or even Who-adjacent.

In school, he was bullied, and got in trouble a lot. He was grumpy because many other Whos alienated him from Christmas events, so he grew weary and quarrelsome about the holiday. While trying to impress a girl named Martha (from school) that he liked, he also suffered humiliation when cooking a meal then botching the carving of the roast beast. More grudgework.

And in another show, he was shown to have been a good soul whose mother was doting and kind. She died earlier in his life. So he was trying to handle grief which greatly lent to his ill-tempered demeanor. Once healed from that with the love of the Whos, he became a nicer being.

I don't know if the other abandoned him so young, and he never knew her, or she died and left him alone and angry (the latter being a possible alternate timeline).

I also got to believe that his small heart was a metaphor for lacking emotional and spiritual growth, due to grief or other trauma (like the death of a parent, and constant humiliation and bullying). So when his great grew, he just matured and let down his walls. I don't think this is that big of a secret.

As far as his "race" or kind, I think it's the same as trying to figure out the Whos, or whatever. Also, makes you wonder since Horton heard a Who through a small fuzzy flower, and a whole village lived in there. So - does the Grinch live in that smaller universe as well?

^ Seems like a plausible story.

Oh wow, the Who plot thickens.

I think the Grinch needs a memoir.

We need possible titles.

1. Who am I?

2. Who I am

3. I'm green but not mean

4. I was only borrowing it

Any more?

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" was first published in 1957, but in a summer 1955 issue of Redbook magazine, according to the Smithsonian, the author published and illustrated a poem called "The Hoobub and the Grinch." In this instance, the Grinch is a huckster who sells a piece of string for the exorbitant price of 98 cents to a furry, yellow, sunbathing boor.

The Grinch himself is black and white; not green at all.
The Grinch acquired his definitive green when Chuck Jones adapted the Dr. Seuss book into the 1966 holiday TV special of the same name.

The Grinch's literal heart, when he lets Christmas into his metaphorical heart, is said to grow "three sizes." This isn't unheard of in nature. "He's really a snake. I mean not just any snake, he's a python," Dr. Kass explained. A Burmese python's heart, specifically, rapidly and significantly grows right after eating. The cardiologist points to two textual clues that suggest The Grinch is this kind of snake — the heart growth occurs around the time of a large meal of "roast beast," and when he meets Cindy Lou Who, the character "slithered" around, all serpent-like.

That story is a short one, and when adapted into the feature-length, live action "Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas" in 2000, filmmakers suggested a link between the Grinch's tough childhood and his hatred of Christmas — he was abandoned and bullied in holiday-obsessed Whoville. In the 1982 TV special, "The Grinch Catches the Cat in the Hat," it's explained that the character's resentment of Christmas stems from tragedy and trauma — his mother died when he was young, which left him permanently sad and mean.

My understanding is, he’s somebody who was different and wanted to be left the hell alone away from people & their bullshit, and he was demonized because of it. I understand completely.

I honestly didn't realize he had that much history. It was kind of funny finding out.

There's a cut away of him jumping on the bed. He jumps too high, hits his head on the ceiling and comes back down with the football head.

It doesn't make sense in the canon of Family Guy, because we've seen Stewie's birth and he comes out with it like that.

In all my life I had never given much thought to the Who world until I got caught up in another person's question. He is a Grinch, whatever that is, and is named Grinch, first or last name, who knows, much like the Whos, except we do have it established it's a last name, which means Whoville had a founder. And they all live on a speck of dust which at the end of it so do we. At which point survived due to the actions of an elephant. Dr. Suess was really ahead of his time.
