The only time I was at karaoke was on my honeymoon in Tokyo a couple of years ago. My husband and I got talking to a couple of Japanese girls and one thing led to another and before you knew it we were all at some karaoke place. The selection of English language songs was quite small so when I was done with Billie Jean, Material Girl and some Robert Palmer song (I think) I turned to some Japanese songs. For the record, I don't speak much Japanese and at that time, I spoke precisely zero Japanese. So it was a complete disaster. But our new friends gave me massive props for the attempt.

That same night we all went to some karaoke bar in Kabukicho where they have a live band to accompany the karaoke singers. I avoided the Japanese songs there because I'd learned my lesson by then but I had the band play Cherry Pie, by Warrant, and much to my surprise, not only did they know the song but the guy who was playing guitar was amazing. That whole band was great. I wish I could remember their name. My husband refused to sing but they let him play bass for a few songs. My big regret is that I didn't sing on any of those songs where he was playing bass. Next time though... Next time.

Can't remember the name of the song now, but it was at this holiday camp. Multi-ethnic crowd. Feminists present too. There was a live band playing, with a down's syndrome person on mic. The drink was flowing and the night was late. Maybe the song was "I Will Survive"? On a night like this, with everyone drunk and a greasy floor, it's hard to recall all the facts. Halfway through the song, the bass player had turned his bass into an upright bass and started spinning it round - like those jazz players used to do to old swing standards. Meanwhile the drummer was failing spectacularly at twirling his drum sticks, and also failing to catch them. At the same time, the guitarist had managed to start off his own pyrotechnic display, courtesy of smashing his guitar into an amp. To cap it all off, before the song finished the guy on mic managed to fall onto the floor face down, in a puddle of his own beer. All in all, it was a good night though, very entertaining.

The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

If you can add value to someone's life then why not. Especially if it colors their days...
