Ancestry.com, My Heritage DNA or 23 and Me - Did you get the kit for yourself/family? My aunt sent me the Ancestry.com kit a few years ago for my birthday.
My mother and her parent's/family were born in Poland, my father's side is from Lithuania. I knew about some of my parent's family origin. I did not know everything however! Some of the info: 79% eastern European/Russian, and 21% is other European countries. Romania, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia. The 23 and me is another ancestry info kit. They can also test for genetic health risks. One of my co workers got the ancestry kit from 23 and me. He was happy to find out about his Afican ancestry and other info. [Edited 10/10/21 16:48pm] | |

AlphaStreet, I have to do some more research. My mother told me that on her mother's side, royalty. My mother's side of the family originates from Poland and my father from Lithuania. | |

Trivial, I'm surprised that you didn't know you had no black in you. With those genes, you must be borderline transparent, no offense. |

My sister did. She went all out in investigating our family history. I didn't really have much interest in it because I really don't care about anything from my father's side. I never met him so why would I care about anything about him, you know? So I don't know the percentages and stuff but it's like three quarters Irish with the rest being a mixture of Scottish, Scandinavian and Welsh. I was just happy that there was no English | |

I did both Ancestry and 23 & Me years ago. They don't match exactly there's some shifting in the larger percentages. I've listed my percentages already not doing it again. I'm very much West African, a bit of every country involved. A bit European, heavy on the British and Irish with splatters of various other countries. And a bit NA and Asian, disappointed it wasn't more but that's how dna works, you don't get everything. I've found a "twin" cousin, we look exactly alike I'm just a couple of shades darker. And a mountain of other cousins ranging the entire spectrum. 23 did identify my eye issues but they're getting annoying with the health and physical surveys, they pinging me every week with something new. Ancestry dropped me because I won't pay the monthly fee so I could have more twins out there somewhere I'll never meet. I don't think I'll try any others, I even got my mitochondrial dna number with 23 which was cool if I ever want to drill down into it and follow the path of migration. But I know enough for now. Time keeps on slipping into the future...

Just an opinion hope not offensive! Do you know where in Scandinavia? So interesting to be 3/4 these isles and then there too. | |

Which is probably less impressive than it sounds because Ireland has had so many kings in the past that I'd say most people alive today probably have some sort of link to the old kings. My father left after failing to convince my mother to have an abortion when she was pregnant on me. This was just before my sister's 2nd birthday. He left my mother alone with two babies and never looked back and he, nor any of his family, have ever tried to contact me or my sister. Even when our mother died he never showed his face. So I'd rather not know anything about him. For example, I don't even know his full name. My sister knows, obviously, but I don't. And I'd rather keep it that way. | |

She's a 2nd cousin working on the family tree, she got pinged about me when I did my test and reached out. Got connected to people I knew existed but had zero info on. I liked that. Choosing a test depends on what you want to know. Some go back to 10,000s of years, some breakdown the Neanderthal info, some look deeper into genetic health. I'm happy with the 2 I chose. Both concentrated on the last few hundred years. Ancestry has probably the largest resources for connecting to current family, it's going to cost you. 23 has the general genetic health screening and tendency screening, like if you're prone to be athletic, like sweets or have celiac disease, stuff like that. My half brother and sister were born in Brazil in the early 1960s, their father and his family were born in Brazil as well. So they are half Brazilian and
Polish. They also probably have some African genes from their grandfather/ father's side(my mother was told). I have to review my sister's dna info. My brother died a few years back, and so did my mother and her parents. They all would have enjoyed reading/ learning more about their ancestry. [Edited 10/10/21 17:39pm] | |

That’s amazing  it’s on my bucket list for sure.Being Arab in a historically charged region, my racial background is mostly a mystery to me, I’m sure though when I shake my DNA family tree, a lot of different people will fall due to the inter-marriages throughout the generations. The only thing I’m aware of, is that I have eastern African in me (from my father’s side). My grandmother who passed away 70 years ago was from Zanzibar. | |
