EmmaMcG's Shang Chi Review

Of all Marvel's upcoming movies, Shang Chi was one of my most anticipated. I had zero prior knowledge of the characters, plot or even most of the actors starring in it. So you might wonder why I was looking forward to it so much. Well, I am a massive fan of Hong Kong cinema. Have been for almost 20 years now, which is two thirds of my life. I've seen literally thousands of HK movies. So when Marvel announced a movie based on Shang Chi I couldn't have cared less. BUT, when they announced that it was to star Michelle Yeoh and, in his first ever Hollywood movie, Tony Leung, my interest shot through the roof. Then, I later find out that the action choreography (a massively important task in HK action movies) was to be done by Brad Allen, a former member of the famed Jackie Chan Stunt Team. Which gets me even more hyped. So it's fair to say that I was expecting big things.... And now that I've seen the movie, I'm slightly disappointed.

It's not a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination. It's actually quite good. It just.... could have been better. The fight scenes are all incredible (thank you Brad Allen, RIP) and Tony Leung gives one of the best pure acting performances of the entire MCU, But the lead actor just doesn't feel right to me. He's got zero charisma and his female sidekick is just plain annoying. The "humour", if you could call it that, constantly falls flat. Even the post credit cameos from a couple of Avengers feels tacked on. Tony Leung's "Mandarin" gets a lot more screentime than I thought he would and to be honest, I would have preferred if the movie just focused solely on him and his wife's relationship. It was far more interesting than the generic storyline they went with.

Again, it's not a bad movie despite the obvious flaws. One particular extended cameo from a returning MCU character was a nice surprise. Tony Leung was great. Michelle Yeoh did what she had to well enough. The inevitable sequel will probably be better now that they've gotten all the introductions and set-up out of the way. I can't help but think though that the whole movie was kind of inconsequential to the MCU. I guess I've become accustomed to every MCU movie having big knock-on effects to the wider MCU. There's none of that here. What is here is a decent superhero movie with some good action, one or two funny moments and Tony Leung's Hollywood debut. And I'd say it's worth seeing for that alone.

3/5

I'll also add that it was nice to see a special dedication in the credits for Brad Allen, who died at the age of 48 just a few weeks ago. After working his way up through Jackie Chan's stunt team, going from stunt man to action director, he was starting to make a name for himself in Hollywood. Some of his recent credits include stunt work for Wonder Woman as well as being stunt co-ordinator on Solo: A Star Wars Story and Rush Hour 3, teaming up with his former mentor, Jackie Chan.

The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. (TV Series 1993–1994) - IMDb

Check out Brisco County Jr. TV series from 1993-1994. Very underated TV series which really hasn't seen the light of day since it came out. I myself never watched it when it first came out. I'm currently watching it now for the first time and I'm enjoying it very much. It has everything Cowboys/action/adventure/Comedy/Mystery/Ninjas/Sci-Fi. I think you would like it

Came back from seeing Shang-Chi. I'm with everyone else with it's ok. Choreography is great, the ending battle felt like Marvel. I found Akwafina a odd choice as a love interest, she gives off old lady vibes to me. I wasn't sold on the storyline but I'm fine with how it ended up fitting into the overall universe. I think the actors need to marinate a bit more to bring out their personalities. I'd rather see more brother and sister dynamics

Spiderman no way home-is a big yes. Green Goblin, Dr. Ock, Sandman, (All alluded to in the trailer), and Electro, Mysterio ('cuz you know he isn't dead) and the last one?? Sinster 6 vs 3 spiderman.

Eternals looks boring.

SPOILER ALERT: I heard that Spiderman is in the Venom movie (or if not in venom 2 will be in the next venom movie) That was part of the sony deal with Disney to keep using peter parker for a fee and use of Tom's spiderman in a venom movie. I know a Miles spiderman movie is in the works at Sony too.

‘Shang-Chi’ Nabs Another Big Box Office Milestone
by Scott Mendelson | Forbes

With Venom: Let There Be Carnage burning up the domestic box office ($6 million on Monday for a $96 million four-day cume), No Time To Die kicking butt overseas and The Battle of Lake Bringjin passing $400 million in China alone, Marvel and Disney’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings cume is now $212,456,765 million, which means it has now passed the domestic cume of Thor: The Dark World ($206.3 million in 2013). More importantly, it has passed the$206.3 million gross of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys For Life, meaning the Simu Liu-starring MCU actioner is the biggest-grossing movie of 2021 and 2020.

While Shang-Chi obviously took a hit overseas from compromised overseas markets, it still sailed past $400 million worldwide this weekend, becoming the first pandemic-era Hollywood movie to do so without a big boost (all due respect to Godzilla Vs. Kong and F9) from China. James Bond’s No Time To Die will likely do so as well next weekend, but Marvel’s Shang-Chi was first.

Shang-Chi is likely going to end the year as the first or second-biggest domestic grosser. Moreover barring a happy surprise in the first third of 2022, it will likely remain the high water mark up over or under Spider-Man: No Way Home until at best The Batman and/or Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in March of next year. As for a mega-hit domestic release that isn’t a DC/Marvel superhero flick, well, at best John Wick: Chapter 4 or Top Gun: Maverick (whichever one sticks with the Memorial Day 2022 release) and at worst Jurassic World: Dominion in June. Yes, I will be amused if Keanu Reeves’ Matrix 4 and Keanu Reeves’ John Wick 4 both soar to infinity and beyond, but that’s for another day.

‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’: Will Poulter To Play Adam Warlock In Next Installment Of Marvel Franchise
by Justin Kroll • October 11, 2021 • Deadline

After teasing his appearance at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Adam Warlock looks ready to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the next installment of the hit franchise. Sources tell Deadline that Will Poulter has landed the role of Warlock in Marvel’s anticipated sequel. James Gunn is returning to direct, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige producing.

Like with any Marvel film, details behind the plot are being kept under lock and key. Production is expected to start in November.

The character was first teased in a post-credit scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, when Ayesha, played by Elizabeth Debicki, unveils to her chambermaid the perfect Sovereign she has created to help destroy the Guardians once and for all. Ever since that scene, fans have waited patiently to see who would ultimately play that character, with their wishes now granted.

Sources say Gunn and execs began their lengthy search for the person would be playing Warlock at the end of August, with Poulter meeting along with several other actors for the coveted part. As it is common with any major Marvel property, execs and Gunn took their time with the role given how excited fans were when it was first teased. In the end, Poulter’s test was too good to pass up.

Best known for roles in The Revenant and Detroit, Poulter has been busy on the TV front, most recently appearing in the acclaimed Amazon miniseries The Underground Railroad. He next can be seen in Hulu’s limited series Dopesick. He is repped by WME and Hamilton Hodell.

Didn't do the What if..? series, well I saw the 1st 2 episodes and figured what was the point. Went to the movie-house for Shang-Chi, outside of Awkafina giving me stereotypical old jewish lady vibes, I was cool with it. I will be going to all the Marvel movies. Will do Hawkeyes show. I don't have it all down when or what is supposed to be coming but I'm there. DC lost me, I'm sure I'll see a few but only a few. And that'll be my superhero journey.

What If? came from a comic book series. The DC version is called Elseworlds. It's like one off alternate stories, sometimes with a Twilight Zone kinda vibe to it. Like how would it be different if Kal-El (Superman) landed in the middle ages instead of modern times with the Kents. They're not supposed to be official timeline stories.

I'd love to see that.

Yeah, I got the point of it. I'll probably get to it at another time. I'd rather stay linear for the moment until they conclude with this batch of heroes.

What If...? may seem like random episodes at first, but it's all tied together in the finale to make the entire season one cohesive story.

Completely disagree.

Black Widow was a fun spy movie in its own right and helps set some future storylines in motion with the introduction of Yelena and establishing Julia Louis Dreyfus character as a villain version of Coulson's role from Phase 1.

Shang Chi was pretty good although the best thing about that movie was Tony Leung's "Mandarin". Shang Chi himself still requires a sequel in my opinion just so we can get more invested in him.

Wandavision and Loki were fucking amazing. Wandavision was almost like a Marvel version of Twin Peaks or something and Loki helps set up the entire future of the MCU by introducing the multiverse while also being a great character study of Marvel's best cinematic villain. Falcon & The Winter Soldier was a fun, action packed show that also fulfilled its purpose of introducing us to a new Captain America and some villains who will play important roles in future movies.

The beginning of Phase 4 seems to be designed to set up the future of the MCU. And it's understandable that they'd be in full "reset mode" following Avengers Endgame. That movie was the end of the Infinity Saga and now we're into something new. This is a new beginning. A new story. It would be unfair to expect them to be able to pick up where they left off in Endgame. They need to establish the new cast and introduce a new big threat first. If they rush it we'll end up with something like the DCEU. And nobody wants that.

The next few shows and movies look pretty good. I'm not sold on Eternals but that's mainly because I've never heard of them. Hawkeye looks alright. I wasn't sold at first but the Christmas setting really appeals to me. Spider-Man: No Way Home looks mental. I can't wait for that. Doctor Strange 2 being like a sequel to both Spider-Man and Wandavision has me hyped. Next year's stuff looks pretty good all round with She-Hulk, The Marvels, Black Panther 2 and Thor: Love & Thunder.

That's not to mention what else they've got up their sleeve. Not only is Charlie Cox rumoured to be making an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it's also been rumoured that Marvel are reviving the Daredevil show for Disney Plus and that he'll be reprising his role in multiple movies going forward, possibly along with Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin also returning. Daredevil is one of the best superhero shows of all time and both Cox and D'Onofrio played their roles to perfection.

So the future of Phase 4 looks bright but more importantly than that, what they're doing now means that Phase 5 and 6 look even better.

Maybe Black Panther 2, Spider-man: No Way Home & Fantastic Four will get me juiced for these movies again. Namor's always been one of my favorite characters, so I'm looking forward to seeing him in BP2. I hope Marvel doesn't ruin him like they did the Hulk - he went from being a savage badass to comic relief. 2008's "The Incredible Hulk" is still one of my favorite superhero flicks.

THIS is what I'm talking about!

I was hoping the full trailer for The Batman would grab my interest but I'm still not sold on it at all. Emo Batman does absolutely nothing for me. This doesn't even look like a movie. It looks like a TV show. And not a particularly big budget one at that. The whole cast seem very low rent too. Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman? Gollum as Alfred? Colin Farrell looks completely unrecognizable as the Penguin though. Some great make-up effects. But that just begs the question, why cast Colin Farrell to begin with?

I'm hoping that this trailer is not indicative of the movie and that it's just been put together to garner the interest of, let's say, "difficult" teen boys who are impressed by anything they perceive to be "edgy". But yet another Batman origin story just seems boring to me. How many times do we need to see Martha Wayne's pearls drop in slow motion? lol

By contrast you got Junior SpaceCadet Spidey-Boy eternally-bereft of any "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibilty" core principle aggressively avoiding responsibility at all costs every film because the fanboys and larger MCU decided everyone already gets/knows the Uncle Ben origin.

Let's pull up the last Batman iteration to intentionally omit that important piece of Wayne family history for insight in how that worked out for character development:

That's just it though. I don't think it will flop. I think Batman has a place in pop culture now where they can release any old shite and give Batman a starring role and it will make money. And in fairness, this movie doesn't look awful. Just boring and badly cast. I will of course hope that I'm wrong and if the movie turns out to be really good I will happy. But everything I've seen so far suggests I won't like it.
