Rate last TV series seen - Late Summer edition

I am so glad I followed a recommendation to watch this series which is now streaming on Hulu. It is so entertaining. First, many of the actors ended up being breakout stars later, such as Seth

Rogen, James Franco, and Jason Segal. Second, This was produced by pre-celebrity Judd Apatow who brings a drop of sweetness to the characters despite all their flaws and adolescent self-centeredness. Third, it is relatable especially if you went to high school within a decade of the early 1980s setting. Fourth, it is funny. And finally, it has some great classic rock in each episode.

I'm going to go w/ the 4 star system.

Special (Netflix): Only two seasons, second one just came out. Super fun, touching, and worth the binge.

Loki (Disney+): Worth. Every. Minute. The ending was a bit confusing, but I guess it's a setup for Doctor Strange (as will the Spider-verse movie be).

Shrill (Hulu): It's a real coming out story for the main character, a woman and writer. Three seasons total, the last just came out. I think it was a great vehicle for Aidy Bryant.

100 Foot Wave. Just starting it and it's more of a docuseries so it's difficult to rate. I've always loved watching surfing. Can't surf myself. Too cowardly of being the only "one", nowadays that's not true anymore, yay. But to me these are some of the most beautiful images in the world, a solitary person barreling thru a crashing giant wave. So I'm loving it and learning a lot I've never heard before.

^ I found this is a series I can't get in to despite the hype. It feels like tragedy porn to me. shrug I'm glad Liz is succeeding though.

No spoilers:

So you've never watched The Handmaid's Tale before? It's a really good series. I've read both books, the sequel just came out in 2019 or so, The Testaments.

Season 1 is basically the original novel, The Handmaid's Tale. The narrator in the book is much more passive and non-resistant. Although she's not named as June, the cassette tapes we see in the series are especially noted in the novel. We assume it's June, but we aren't sure. The novel has an epilogue in the future, where Gilead has fallen, and the U.S. looks slightly different but is stable again. A university is having a symposium on Gilead, and the tapes are talked about, but they can't quite know who recorded them.

Margaret Atwood is a consultant on the series, so her influence is still very much in the series. I'm curious to see how it all finally ends, and how the stories from the three narrators in The Testaments will be incorporated.

The first 2 seasons are pretty dark and dim. But it's all leading to something, trust. Season 3 has more fight in it, and season 4 is totally a 180º in many regards. I think the latest season is the best one yet, by far.

Grace & Frankie (Netflix) 4.5/5. I've been watching it for a while now. I always stop mid season because I think it'll be the last one and I don't want it over. But now it's at it's 7th and final season. It'll probably be a year before I make it to the final episode. *sigh* But I have thoroughly loved and enjoyed the heck out of these ladies. A wonderful throwback to the Odd Couple and I Love Lucy, all wapped up in one, for modern times.

Planning on watching this. I know this dropped this week, so is your rating based on the whole series or the first few episodes?

Season 1: star star star of 4.

Entertaining Netflix series that explores being an Indian (Asian)American teenaged girl in a Freaks and Geeks context. While this is not as good as Freak and Geeks, it does have the unique cultural aspect as well as one aspect that went against expectations: She is smitten with the hottest guy at school but also has more in common with a fellow brainiac who likes her. At first, I thought it was obvious at some point that she would see through the shallowness of being obsessed with the hottie but things have taken an unexpected path and I don't know where things will end up in Season 2.

Yes for the entire series. I've seen all of 1-6 and half of 7.

I'm not sure how I feel about this show yet. That poop scene took it out of bonds for me. I hope that doesn't become the new norm, like having to watch people vomit in movies nowadays, you have to watch it in explicit detail every single time, almost. I don't do that in reallife. Anyway, the show definitely raises deep feelings. I liked Tanya, up to a point I liked Armond. I get Shane wasn't supposed to be likeable but I couldn't dislike him. Quinn was kind of standard coming of age. Everyone else plays on the border of liking and disliking, except Paula who fell all the way into dislike land.
