'I was worried Lindsay, Paris or Britney would die': why the 2000s were so toxic for women

This was a very insightful read, and I share a lot of the same sentiments remembering tabloid culture during that time.

Body shaming, media harassment, relentless cruelty – it’s time to reassess the decade that feminism forgot

by Sirin Kale

.

Iwent to university in 2007. On my first day, every fresher had their photo taken; the pictures were pinned to a bulletin board in my halls. That evening, older male students scrawled on the photographs of the girls, rating our attractiveness. No one got in trouble. Later, the same men published a gossip magazine that Photoshopped images of female students on to porn stars, dissected our sex lives and made rape jokes. The magazine was printed using university funds. No one got kicked out. None of this seemed particularly objectionable to me, an 18-year-old girl. This was just the way things were. Internalised misogyny ran deep in the 2000s. Hell, I was just happy I got a high score on my photograph.

Thanks for sharing. I wasn’t a fan of either of them and thought they lacked real talent though Lindsay’s movies were good, so I remember putting them down as well, mainly cause I was bitter about long time favourites not being popular like before. And I hated how the media treated mj, there should be an apology to him too in my opinion

I'm still surprised Lohan isn't dead. Nicole was facing some harsh shit for a minute there. Lohan seems to be the most un-self-aware one of them. Paris knew she was sorta playing a part. But Lohan just lies and lies and lies about the simplest of shit.

Calling the truth isn't an attack. She's been caught in lie after lie. Saying one thing to people like Oprah (at the time), and something else totally different happening. I'm not the press or paparazzi or a gossip mag. I have no investment in her life, so when I see her say "I went left" and she's got her proverbial right blinker on - that's a lie.

I think some people just remember events differently depending on their mood, I think that's lohan. her memory is sort of coloured by how she feels in that moment in time?

Let's not forget how poor old Janet was treated after the super bowl. It was a nipple not a porn film and J.t got away with it...

It's not about a mood. She's not stupid or blinded by her mood at the time.

Her problem is substance abuse. When she's drunk or doing whatever, she forgets things, or purposely lies knowing she's never going to follow through. Her moving to and living in Dubai has been good mostly. Paparazzi is illegal over there, so they can move about without being hounded. I hate the stereotype trope of childhood star grown up and fucked up, but Lohan really got in that role for a very long time. It's all too-often true of people. Danny Bonaduce, Leif Garrett, Lohan, Dana Plato, Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges, the list is long.

I also believe a life of privilege and yes-men just ruins someone's self-worth, perspective, and grip on reality. I mean, when you have Jane Fonda reading you for being late or not showing up, you got issues. lol

I hope nothing but the best for anyone in their positions. But you can't change what you don't acknowledge. (Also, her parents are nightmares of people - remember those years of child custody and divorce in the press? Michael went on Dr. Phil talking shit, and Dina showed up at another time drunk off her ass.)

I think it's mostly a matter of reflecting, most of all. I don't think that recognizing the toxicity from that era means we're to ignore those women's flaws, but then to think they have a responsability for their actions to being ok with their harassment or indulging in pleasure in tabloid rumours is a long stretch. I didn't like their music a lot of times back then as well, but I absolutely never understood why there were people who felt they had the right to send hate mail because of this.

I certainly agree that Michael Jackson deserves an apology from the media, but with regards to 'either of them...lacked real talent', we know that cannot apply to Britney Spears since we now know that Britney Spears is objectively a better songwriter than Beyonce Knowles.

Anyone who thinks the 2000s were particularly toxic for women hasn't been around for long.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

And to be sure, there exists more footage of Britney Spears playing the piano to an untitled piece:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMokPJ_JnIQ&t=95s

*

To be sure, this helps to obliterate the ludicrious notion that Beyonce Knowles is as good a songwriter as Britney Spears.

*

Beyonce Knowles owes an apology to both the music industry and to the black community on this subject;

*

for all her championing female empowerment, it is ironic that the only factor keeping her from being disgraced on this matter is being married to an influential man.

Totally off topic; go back to your own thread no one is interested in. razz

Any reason you post this in response to threads I’ve replied to or started?

At the end of the day, the ultimate (deserved) humilation of Beyonce Knowles is that there remains 0 evidence she has ever written a hit song in her entire career unlike Britney Spears, and no amount of Grammy Awards or hiding behind racism can ever make up for it.

*

Even if there is footage of her playing a musical instrument, there is 0 evidence she can write more than one melody on a musical instrument, unlike Britney Spears.

*

And she doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt for anything; about Beyonce hiding behind racism(?):

*

"Those of you who have heard the deluxe version of Beyoncé's I am... Sasha Fierce will know of the song "Smash into you". Well, it turns out the song was Jon McLaughlin's before it landed in the metal clad hand of Sasha, Miss Fierce, Mrs. Carter, Beyoncé - whatever the bitch is calling herself today...

*

Christopher Stewart (Tricky Stewart), Terius Nash (The Dream) and Thaddis Harrell had always written the song, but not-so-mysteriously Beyoncé still managed to snag herself a writing credit, even though the songs lyrics were the same before the song even reached her. She's also listed as producing the song. Her version sounds the same as Jon McLaughlin's. Even down to the way she sings it. So what exactly did she produce except lies?
*
Beyoncé has always been known for this. The first time I caught of whiff of Beyoncé trying to scam writing credits was for Destiny's child Christmas album 8 days of Christmas. Beyoncé was listed as the sole songwriter of "Silent night". Needless to say that's utter bullshit.

*

https://randomjpop.blogspot.com/2011/09/beyonce-songwriting-scams-continue-on-4.html

*

“You know when I was writing the Destiny’s Child songs, it was a big thing to be that young and taking control,” she said in a GQ cover story. As D’Addario points out, despite her use of “I,” there is not a single song over Destiny’s Child’s existence that she wrote herself...

*

“‘Crazy in Love’ was really hard to write because there was so much going on… I mean, I had written—what?—seven, eight number one songs with Destiny’s Child, in a row?” But as Friedman wrote, Beyoncé didn’t technically write the song. She barely co-wrote it."

I think it has to do with the 2000s also having this characteristic of stuff like Britney and Beyoncé embracing very open sexuality in their music and performances as an aspect of "girl power" about women being in control of themselves and how it contradicts this media harassment and how we find it more problematic and a lot more ample than the empowering aspect looking back.

It is also notable how the media is rushing now to categorize Britney as a former teen star to try to absolve themselves for not only knowing they wanted to kill her and ruin her life, but also the fact that there being evidence that Britney being a legitimate songwriter after her teen days humiliates Beyonce Knwoles, which by extention humiliates the black community and the music industry itself.

*

Anyway, it is partially Britney's fault for continuing to stay in the media/industry when she already knows how evil the music industry and the media is.
