What is going on with people obsessing over dogs?

Now as a dog owner myself I appreciate and love dogs like any American. However...i saw a post from a friend...and heard from even out the mouths of many people in our mid thirties and down that they would "die" and "kill" for their dog (even for a cat). What really got me was a post from a friend who said she would save a dogs life than a little kid in need of help. Now I love my dogs but if they need to be put down, they gotta go.

I think people who don't have kids / never had to raise kids have no idea what they are talking about. A dogs life is maybe at the most 15 years...they know their place in the world and can learn things on their own really with or without you...essentially they don't "need" us. A humans life to me is invaluable. Are people who have this obsession with their dogs are sometimes annoying in their comparison? Sometimes I feel like they are substituting their lack of human communication and emotional skills onto their animals (who cant talk back or critique them).

I have even broke up with someone due to their disconnection from the relationship because all emotional connection went to the dogs while being constantly rejected.

Thoughts?

I know a lot of people who obsess over their dogs. I think its really disturbing when they are so consumed and they dont even know it. There are people who cant even go to the can without their dogs sitting there to support them, but I guess that is a whole different phychiatric discussion. I understand some people really love their dogs, but I'm like, dude, its a dog! Stop treating it like a child!

Love cats and dogs and used to have one of each, but no current pets. I can’t relate to those who prefer dogs over human company that they deny their human counterparts some respect. My moms friend is like that with her dog and says we should love everybody when my mom told her not to bring the dog over one time, completely disregarding any boundaries set in place and bringing him over anyways. She did the same to another friend of theirs and I find her extremely annoying though her dog is cute, but that’s besides the point

Yeah. I have to train my dog better when company comes over. She will literally run and jump all over them. My older dog gets along with people just fine but not everyone likes dogs like that so she goes in her kennel out of respect.

I agree though...animals are not equal in any comparison to a child or a human and never will be. That comment a friend made just disturbed me but also reminded me that many Americans are obsessed with their pets now. Especially millennials. At least Boomers knew the difference.

I am kinda neutral about dogs primarily because of many owner's weird behavior. I don't like it when people bring their dogs inside restaurants/ stores, allow them to bark incessantly, run off-leash (he won't bite you...), etc.

dogs are disgusting and should be left at home and outdoors, and away from the public...i refuse to visit people that keep dogs in their house... those people are predominantly filthy, and their homes and furniture are stench and hair ridden

I have 3. Love them to pieces. And I can see how someone can get so involved. But for me at this point I do feel a bit wary of people who exchange human companionship for a dog's. The dynamics are not the same. The person is always in charge of their relationship with the dog, the dog doesn't have much say so.

I pity you and your friends with animals are probably happy that you don't come over.

Hehehe. The "I hate people" vibe does hand in hand with some owners. Not all but it does happen.

There are plenty of people out there like that and the media knows it too. All year long there are commercials on TV that feel like they go on for five minutes asking for donations against animal abuse. And Christmas time is the worst. Playing songs like "Silent Night" and "The First Noel" while showing images of dogs looking all sad. There is one that must have come on ten times today along showing a sad looking dog while someone sings the lyric "Born is the King of Israel". Uh....excuse me, but what in the HELL does a dog know or feel about The King of Israel being born? lol If you're going to use Christmas to work people for money, at least use a song more appropriate like "What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas" because all living things can relate to lonliness. lol

.

I used to think I wanted a cute little dog like Chester on the TV show "The Nanny". Uh....no honey, Chester was right where he belonged on TV where he was paid a nice salary to keep getting his hair done so he could continue looking cute. Chester better be glad he was not living with me this year. By the time I got through spending all that money on the "Sign O The Times" Deluxe album, Chester would have been looking like James Brown's mug shot. lol

Truth. I like dogs but unfortunately I'm not in that space where I have the time to tend to one.

Also my wife hates pets. She doesn't go to anyone's house with a pet. I know if I get one his residence would be permanently outside. Another problem would be nosy neighbors wondering why my dog is outside in 29 degree weather. And just like you said dogs have better survival instincts than humans. Of course I'm not speaking of miniature house dogs. Like Soul stated I like German Shephards. One of my childhood friends has one and he is a very good guard dog. I just don't have time for these folks that value dogs over humans.

Dogs are OK. Right now I'm not really feeling them though. My neighbor has a dog that will not shut up. It's 3:57 AM and the dog was just barking for about 20 minutes straight. disbelief

I never understood the excessive love for dogs. They are great companions etc, but except in extreme situations (Hitler's life or a dogs life etc), their lives are in no way comparable to the lives of humans. It's crazy to think that some animals are treated better than some humans.

Anyways, I'm a cat person, so..

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

I fear we are already too far gone when it comes to dogs.

We are currently looking for a new home and it will entail assessing neighbors on either side

for possible dog issues., ie, barking, off-leash charging etc.

Facts all day Andy. You always crack me up on god! For real, I really don't have the expenses for dog maintenance. Many times its why families give them up especially when they start having kids. My albums are my expenses too lol. I was told us it was going to be 350.00 for her to go to the doctor once for some diarrhea. We changed her food and she was fine. I told my bf from now on we doing our own google searches instead of needlessly spending cash unless an emergency. Even for a check up it ran over 200.00 for each dog!

I agree with everyone its really about the owners and not tje dogs themselves. Like kids...there is a time and place for them...not in grown folks business and if they are jumping all over guests they need to be in a kennel or given a bone to chill out with. Some people have emotional support dogs etc...but even those are well trained to be that.
