Agree, there is no greatest movie ever. Even if you broke it down into categories such a comedy/drama/thriller/Sci-fi/Horror/Action/Western I could come up with so many for each category.

thx much for this, btw.... Seven Samurai perhaps worth another go, been awhile there too...

Have you ever seen The Magnificent Seven? Maybe a western version would be more to your liking. (The music's great, too.)

Not The Wild Bunch? Westerns in general ehhhhh.... Eastern Japanese samurai/Chinese wuxia films are wayyy superior genre, Seven Samurai just plods along though. It birthed the ensemble film, but... like for example Citizen Kane is influential artistically, but the characters/story is still compelling...

Impossible subjective question ... it'll change from person to person.

However, if you try and look at it objectively I'd say Jaws has a good shout:

- Acting: Superb across the board

- Directing: Genius, ever more so considering the circumstances under which it was made
- Editing: A masterclass in the art
- Soundtrack: Genius again, the best example of what you can do with music in a film
- Box Office: Huge!
- Impact: Changed the industry and created the summer blockbuster

Right, movies are subjective. I would not expect a conservative Grandmother to like Taxi Driver. Or my Mom to like Texas Chainsaw. My Sister thought Casablanca was boring.

So many critics hated the Spielberg movie AI. I thought it was a masterpiece, and proven right by Jonathan Rosenbaum, America's top critic.

He thought Color Purple was too touchy feely, I thought it was masterful.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Watch the 1943 Jane Eyre sometime.

Will have to check it out.

It's on Turner Classic Movies tonight (12/2).

Is The Wild Bunch based on Seven Samurai? Pretty sure it isn't. The Magnificent Seven is definitely an homage to Kurosawa.
