TV Sitcoms: Night Court, Taxi, Cheers, The Jeffersons/The Decades Channel D -5.5.

I watched those shows a lot(the re-runs) when I was a kid!

I am watching Night Court right now - on the LAFF Network, ch 7.3.

It's a great and too often overlooked show these days.

Post about it here --https://prince.org/msg/100/464600

I did not know that Harry(the Judge)passed away a few years ago.

He was a great actor, comedian and Magician! His Sun Sign was Libra.

IIRC he first got a tv break on SNL.

Dan was definitely my favorite. That being said, I think the show has not aged as well as I had hoped. To compare it to a show I loved as a kid and still like as much now if not more is Taxi. I notice Dan (John Larroquette) does the Louis De Palma (Danny Devito) role of being mean sleazy and crossing lines, but does not have the menace and meand Devito brought to his role. Strangely enough he also does not have the heart Devito brought to his role. The only time Dan brought out some real sympathy was when his parents visited. Other than that he is just a jerk. Dan wanting Markie Posts character was not as well developed as Louis and Elaine in taxi (look up the episode where Elaine complains about Louis peeking in the womens' changing room and he tells the story about buying his clothes from the childs section ("husky size"), Louis also had a proper relationship with his real wife Rhea Perlman being on the show. No real development for Dan.

Markie Post's character (Christine???) never had the appeal of Elaine with her interplay with the other characters, her vulnerability including her love for her children. Also Marilu Henner (Elaine) had more sex appeal. Markie Post was cute but that was it.

Andy Kaufman was the better weird guy as Latka, than Bull (Richard Moll) and I think it was developing the character more with his wife again. That being said, I loved Bull as a kid, and the episode with the puppet was cool. Once again I enjoyed Jim (Christopher Llyod) much more too.

As far as the moral compass of the show, Harold T Stone was a little hollow. Sometimes he was just too wacky and shilling for easy laughs. Kind of like his character in the original Stephen King "It" tv series. Judd Hirsch was more the moral compass and had the humor.

Not trying to shit on Night Court per se, but just thought there was a comparison in these two work place comedies, which I noticed with my two favorite characters from respective shows Louis and Dan, then noticed more similiarities.

I WILL SAY, Night Court is still funny and is watchable and that I loved and was excited for the show when I was a kid, but it is a little tarnished, and has moved down in my estimation when it comes to sitcoms. It's all just opinions.

I guess my perspective on both series is a little different than your own considering that I was a teen when Taxi was on the air and an adult when Night Court came out. It's interesting that you compare the two; to me they are representative of their two different eras and are still funny today. I would say the writing on Taxi was more consistently funny, had more character development, and perhaps had more of a social statement to make...but I'm still quite fond of Night Court's cartoonish characters. lol

I also like the sitcom Taxi and Cheers!

I watched the re-runs of Taxi in 1985, the 1990s, 2000s and currently on TV/Decades Channel. Danny Devito(Scorpio), Rhea Perlman(Aries), Tony Danza(Taurus) are some of my favorite characters from Taxi!

Harry "the Hat" Anderson also had some great moments in Cheers. Here is one of the best:

Sherman Helmsley was still really funny even on a kind of lame show like Amen. lol Norman Lear said he had always planned the character of George Jefferson for Sherman and when Sherman couldn't do it initially for All In The Family, Lear held the spot for him (with a temporary actor) until Sherman could do it. Lear said he really couldn't see anyone else in the role. He was right.
