'Mad' Mike Hughes dies after crash-landing homemade rocket

Hopefully he got the answer before he died. Either way, it probably doesn't make any difference to him now...

'A US daredevil pilot has been killed during an attempted launch of a homemade rocket in the Californian desert.

"Mad" Mike Hughes, 64, crash-landed his steam-powered rocket shortly after take-off near Barstow on Saturday.

A video on social media shows a rocket being fired into the sky before plummeting to the ground nearby.

Hughes was well-known for his belief that the Earth was flat. He hoped to prove his theory by going to space.'

Where do they think is "the edge"?

He would have been better off by just traveling in one direction continuously, until he came right back to his starting point. lol

sad poor Mr Hughes. i know we laughed about him last fall but it is truly tragic that he died this way. he was a very dedicated man.

Yes, very sad. I don't buy that theory but I still think it takes some guts to do what he did.

That's sad. I'm sorry it ended that way for him. Hard to understand his obsession but he definitely stuck to his convictions.

here is the video of the launch and crash. Note one of the parachutes is seen coming our as it takes off. Then people realize it has gone wrong and he gets a lesson that gravity is real...

Meh, not really disturbing IMO. Can't really see anything from such a distance, except a puff of dust.

He didn't get up very high, did he.

Stupid to not have more parachutes.

I feel bad for him, but he made the choice. Nobody to blame but himself.

What I don't understand is why wouldn't he just get a plane licence and rent a small plane instead of building his own thing? And why would anyone who believe in a flat earth NOT get a boat licence, buy a boat and go see for themselves. Hell, if I had the slightest doubt about an "end of the earth", I'd want to see it for myself.

Except I'm pretty sure deep down they all know they're hallucinating, which is why it's better to kill oneself in a selfmade rocket, or to never buy a boat and go one talking nonsense online, than to face the fact that one can be so totally, ridiculously wrong about something.

I'm guessing he probably thought it would be quicker to just go straight up into space, instead of spending all that time traveling around the world in a plane or boat.
