Ok, so I don't see an Oscar thread here like I would've any other year on the org, so I'm starting one to say congratulations to Brad Pitt for his solid performance in Once Upon a Time...... Well deserved. I loved movie and found it to be very original. Having said this, I really don't care about the other winners

I don't think people put much stock in award ceremonies anymore. The media outlets try and drum up interest every year but increasingly most of us ordinary folk are "m'eh" about them now.

The 'Hollyweird' thing hasn't helped, but I think the Weinstein factor had the biggest impact. A whole heap of the current starlets stood on the Oscar and Golden Globe stages and said what a wonderful man he was; its at best embarrassing, at worst complicit.

Ricky Gervais also did a grand job showing up how pointless the ceremonies really are. I think the Golden Globes thought it was a smart thing getting him to host like he has (and for us watching at home it was) but he pretty much killed their concept and I don't think they've realised it yet.

Having said that, nice to see Parasite get well deserved recognition. Also thought Brad Pitt was great in Once Upon ... as was Linney in Marriage Story. And of course Joaquin in Joker was off the charts amazing.

I thought Avengers: Endgame should have got a Best Picture nom. It was easily as good as Black Panther (better imo) and this year wasn't a particularly strong Best Picture category.

Yeah what I notice every year is that all the other networks that are not airing the Oscars plays repeats episodes. It's like Hollywood is forcing people to turn into the Oscars.

People still watch that?

If the Oscars are not about the Best American Picture anymore, then the awards should be reborn as a be-all-end-all International Film Awards.

Congratulations to either The Irishman or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for beign the best american picture of the year; and 1917 the best british film of the year.

Also, sometimes I genuinely think the Academy likes to troll a lil bit, like Avengers: Endgame not winning Best Special Effects.

I'm ok with Pitt winning a secondary award after 30 years of acting, but not if the competition is Pacino AND Pesci.

Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig managed to squeeze U Got The Look in their costume design medley. Pretty funny.

I was delighted to see 'Parasite' do well, as someone who watches a lot of non-English language films and series (ok hundreds and hundreds of Japanese, but plenty from many other countries too, including Korea). I could never go back to just watching US and UK films. It's great to get something just a little different. Also, I just really liked the movie 'Parasite', so I'm happy for all involved that they were rewarded for putting together such an interesting film.

It's always been particularly ridiculous that fantastic non-US animated movies have lost out on several occasions to inferior US fare. Especially that year neither Kaguya or Song of the Sea won. I think we all know where the best animation has come from for 30 or 40 years now, but results down the years definitely don't reflect that.

That and the fact the Academy totally blanked the horror / thriller work coming out of Asia in the late 90s/early 2000s ... Ring, Audtion, Oldboy, A Tale of Two Sisters, etc ... I think a couple of the films from that era were actually better than Parasite, but the Academy didn't even acknowledge them!

I really love the animation in Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells. Along with The Tale of Princess Kaguya, I may not have known about any of them had they not been nominated for Academy Awards. And they were so good, I later bought them all on disc which I was not motivated to do for the animated feature winner that year, Big Hero 6 (although I did like that one too).

Really? I don't think it's even close. There's probably 4 or 5 Japanese animated movies I love for every 1 by Disney or Pixar. The US just doesn't really create stuff that covers as much ground as, say, The Wind Rises, Tokyo Godfathers and A Silent Voice, to name just 3 brilliant but very different Japanese anime movies.
