I was delighted to see 'Parasite' do well, as someone who watches a lot of non-English language films and series (ok hundreds and hundreds of Japanese, but plenty from many other countries too, including Korea). I could never go back to just watching US and UK films. It's great to get something just a little different. Also, I just really liked the movie 'Parasite', so I'm happy for all involved that they were rewarded for putting together such an interesting film.

It's always been particularly ridiculous that fantastic non-US animated movies have lost out on several occasions to inferior US fare. Especially that year neither Kaguya or Song of the Sea won. I think we all know where the best animation has come from for 30 or 40 years now, but results down the years definitely don't reflect that.

That and the fact the Academy totally blanked the horror / thriller work coming out of Asia in the late 90s/early 2000s ... Ring, Audtion, Oldboy, A Tale of Two Sisters, etc ... I think a couple of the films from that era were actually better than Parasite, but the Academy didn't even acknowledge them!

Right. I loved 'A Taxi Driver' and 'The Handmaiden' too.

I think I probably liked 'Okuribito' more than 'Slumdog Millionaire' in 2009. hmmm

I'm a big fan of Studio Ghibli movies but the best animated movies of all time come from Disney and Pixar.

Really? I don't think it's even close. There's probably 4 or 5 Japanese animated movies I love for every 1 by Disney or Pixar. The US just doesn't really create stuff that covers as much ground as, say, The Wind Rises, Tokyo Godfathers and A Silent Voice, to name just 3 brilliant but very different Japanese anime movies.

The Jungle Book, Aladdin, 101 Dalmatians, Snow White, Cinderella, The Lion King, Pinocchio, Toy Story 1-4, Finding Nemo, Inside Out, Wall E and Up. That's just a handful of movies from Disney and what they all have in common are that they're all classics, loved by audiences of all ages and all backgrounds, all over the world.

Oh, they've enjoyed more reach and more promotional oomph, no doubt about it. Being in English helps. Yeah, I like nearly all of those films, and love some of them, but as I say I don't think save for a few that they're on the same level. It's all good though.

I would have liked to see Joe Pesci win. He was understated but authoritative.

I agree. All the aforementioned Disney movies are indeed considered classics, but I think the themes in the top anime films are in general more complex.

Exactly, Disney focuses on fairytales and they are very good at it. For "Complex" I would say most of the DC animated movies and TV series associated with Bruce Timm are top notch.
