So is anyone gonna sign up for Disney+?

If you are, is it for the kids or you? What are you looking forward to?

It’s all Star Wars for me and the kids stuff.

Well, after reading this article Disney will be censoring. Which means altering the original content.

So, nope I won't be signing up.

The launch isn't going very well.

And, no - no Disney+ for me. I am outraged at the fact that they have pulled from theaters all the classic films they obtained when they acquired Fox. Disney can suck it.

Well, I'm just glad MJ is scrubbed from the network in The Simpsons episode. Good on Disney.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn’t know about this.

On reflection though, I’m fine with it. The old 50s and 60s musicals are ultimately aimed at kids and if there’s songs and scenes that are now understood to be racist in our slightly more enlightened time then cut it. I don’t want my innocent kid going around singing stuff unknowingly that is demeaning to a minority group. I’m sure he won’t enjoy the movie any less.

Wouldn't it be better to watch the uncut movie with your child and discuss with him how views that were commonplace in an earlier time have evolved - and how we are better for it?

For my part, I am glad that Turner Classic Movies has stood by its commitment to always show movies in their original form - absolutely uncut, no matter how uncomfortable it is. Of course, they always include a disclaimer every time they show Holiday Inn (for example). But that is a small price to pay to not participate in the current cancel culture.

Fair point and yes. That would be a lot better. I remember how impacted I was as a child watching movies that were overtly ABOUT racism and how bad it made me feel.

But, when racism is not shown as a lesson but just as a fun matter of fact then you’d NEED to explain to your kids as you say, why those things aren’t acceptable. It’s a great idea but I’m not sure how realistic it is for most people who’s kids will be watching movies alone on iPads and stuff.

I just did(about 30 minutes ago). It's a one week free trial then $7.00 a month. I recently got rid of Netflix, so i might keep Disney+ for a few months. With Amazon Prime and Disney+, I'm good.

So there were stories about Disney censoring Dumbo & Toy Story 2, but now there are stories about them using content warnings.

https://www.washingtonpos...perts-say/

So which is it? Have they censored or are they just adding content warnings? Doing BOTH doesn't make sense.

(EDIT: I see in the link provided by luv4u that Dumbo was to be censored but instead got a warning.)

I would prefer they just leave it alone and people would have the common sense to not be outraged because they know times have changed. But that's not going to happen.

That leaves: content warning, censoring (like some articles say they've done with Dumbo & Toy Story 2) or deleting (Song Of The South).

Of these choices, I'll take the compromise of a content warning EVERY SINGLE TIME, rather than censoring or deleting a title.

Why do people want to censor stuff from the past? Any rational adult should understand that times have changed, be happy with social progress, and see these old films as proof as how far we've come. As for children? TEACH THEM!! Or, don't. But don't get mad when they repeat the mistakes of the past because nobody remembers the lessons learned.

If you disagree, and think it's good when this old stuff is censored, eventually something you like will be deemed offensive and censored. How will you feel then?

This is just one more reason why I will never give up my physical media collection for streaming. If a movie gets censored or deleted from a streaming service, you can't watch the original anymore UNLESS you have it on disc.

One would hope that by then we would be over this outrage at our offensive past and accept historical truth rationally. But they're censoring Mark Twain today, so, maybe not.

The one person posting on this thread that likes censorship brings up politics to denigrate those whose opinions they disagree with.

Everyone else who commented on that aspect of the D+ service politely shared their opinion on the matter.

That says what? lol lol lol

You could wait until the final episode airs and then watch them all together.

From what I read they don't have this as an option.

Thought it seemed odd though, can anyone confirm?
