If you're OAF like me and have no idea what the OP is referring to...

Stadia is a cloud gaming service operated by Google. It is said to be capable of streaming video games up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with support for high-dynamic-range, to players via the company's numerous data centers across the globe, provided they are using a sufficiently high-speed Internet connection. It is accessible through the Google Chrome web browser on desktop computers, or through the smartphones, tablets, smart televisions, digital media players, and Chromecast.

It's missing practically every feature that Google said it would have and the only games available at the moment are available for MUCH cheaper on the PS4 or Xbox. As it is, it's far too expensive to be considered any sort of competition for PlayStation or Xbox.

However, next year, when they add in all its missing features and they launch the free version, it might be worth looking at. But by then, it might be too late.

The Stadia's launch has been something of a disaster. It's already gotten so much negative publicity. Add to that the fact that Microsoft's own game streaming service, XCloud, will be launching next year. The Xcloud is cheaper plus it will have a massive library of games ready for the launch. Games you don't have to pay a separate fee for. Google are charging $60 for games that are already 2 years old. XCloud incorporates the Xbox Game Pass, which means that you don't have to pay a penny for it's games, even brand new ones like the next Halo. They're all essentially free. All you have to pay for is the subscription fee. Meanwhile, Google are charging the subscription fee and they also charge full price for games.

PlayStation already have their own streaming service called PlayStation Now and similar to the Xcloud, you only have to pay for the subscription. All the games are free. They already have 800 plus games and are adding more all the time. The only caveat is that PlayStation don't add brand new games to the service yet. They won't add anything that's not 12 months old or older. But to make up for that, their subscription fee is the cheapest. $60 per year gets you unlimited access those 800 games. Google are charging $60 for each game. So again, Google are not offering value for money.

What all that means is that both Xbox and PlayStation are offering cheaper and better alternatives to game streaming. By the time Google get their act together and offer something worth the price, they will have lost a fortune. Now, they're Google so they can afford it. But Google do have a history of dropping projects that are not working out. And, until the free version of Stadia launches, it's most definitely not working out.

....so - what news of Stadia, Emma? Any idea how it's doing?? Your bro know??

It's not specifically Stadia I give a damn about, I just want to know whether we ARE going to shift to streaming wholesale - ie. ANY one of them, Microsoft, Samsung, whatever.... It means the death of the "client side"!!! - high power PC/console/smartphone/whatever!!! - A GAMECHANGER to put it EXTREMELY mildly!!!

Anybody else here (in ANY country) use any streaming service?? Which one, and how was your experience??

I heard that the initial launch was not as good as they expected and player counts have been extremely low. Google are even giving an extra 2 games away for free in an effort to entice more people to jump on board but it's not working. So far, it's been a total failure for them. And it's not really due to a lack on interest. It's more because they launched the service with none of the features they promised.

Music is mostly listened to via streaming services these days. Movies are mainly watched via streaming services these days. Games have not yet reached that level but logically thinking, it's only a matter of time. So yes, I do believe that we are looking at an all streaming future for video games. Eventually. But probably not for about 10 years.

I've tried the PlayStation Now service and it works flawlessly. GTA V, Lego Batman 2, God Of War, Red Dead Redemption and Yakuza 5 all worked incredibly well.
I haven't tried the Xcloud service but I've heard that it also works flawlessly. Although that's still in Beta at the moment but the fact that it's supposedly already in perfect working order, that's a good sign.

Curious - where did you get that exact figure, TEN from?

Here, in India, this is going to be HUGE! Like, bigger than oxygen or water, almost smile (OK, no). There IS no retail gaming here - the shift will take Months. Not even years. Just a dom-stated Fact smile

PlayStation 5 and the next Xbox are out next year. Both will obviously support streaming through PlayStation Now and Xcloud respectively, but they will be predominantly disc-based and download systems, same as the current generation of consoles. So streaming won't overtake traditional consoles while these systems are on the market. Consoles typically have a lifespan of about 7 years. The consoles coming AFTER those will likely do away with discs and be download and streaming only. Initially, more people will choose to download their games because that's what they'll be used to but within a couple of years, more and more people will turn to streaming as it's cheaper than buying games and by then, everyone's internet speeds will be vastly improved over what is available now, making streaming more widely viable.

So, in summary, 1 year til the next consoles, 7 years until the NEXT consoles and a couple of years for people to get more comfortable with streaming. Add all that up and you get 10 years.

However, even by then I don't think it will be something that everyone does. Nintendo are notorious for doing things their own way and I don't see them following the others into an all streaming future. They've always been a games company first and foremost and it's worked out incredibly well for them so they have no reason to change their ways. And as long as they continue to do their own thing and provide gamers with a non-streaming method of playing games, streaming will never be the ONLY way.

Not a fan of online-only gaming, mostly because the internet where we are isn't great.

And what happens when your internet is down ... no gaming? At least with disc based games you can still play.

The installs and downloads are getting a bit ridiculous to. My brother loaned me the latest COD: Modern Warfare last weekend ... I still haven't been able to play it as its been installing and downloading updates all week. If I'd have booked a day off work last week to play it I'd have been pretty cheesed off!

The PlayStation Now requires at least 5mb speeds. Which is reasonable enough. The average speed of my connection is just over 600mb. Internet speeds are increasing all the time.

I don't really play many games. Maybe 2 or 3 per year. And when I do, I mostly play on the Switch. You don't get many "day one" updates on Nintendo games because they're generally finished before they're released. About a year ago, my brother sent me a copy of an Assassin's Creed game. The one set in Paris. I never played it because it said I needed to download a 40-something gb update. Fuck that 😂.

Er - I'm going to assume that you're Not A Tech Person *at all*...? Streaming means there will BE NO CONSOLES, or in fact ANY OTHER DEVICE AT ALL except a DUMB terminal running Chrome!! (a cheapo phone say, or a cheapo laptop...)

I know what streaming means. But there will still be PlayStation and Xbox consoles. How do you think I used PlayStation's streaming service? It was on the PlayStation 4 CONSOLE. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett will be out next year. They will both support streaming through their consoles. You have the option to stream directly to PC or any other compatible devices but consoles will still be, by far, the primary method of playing games. Even via streaming. At least, as I said, for the next 10 years.

I was hoping Google would knock this one out of the park, as I think we'll all end up streaming games eventually no matter what my old man friends say (some of whom are younger than me lol ) but this is just another example of Google being Google and missing glaringly obvious things at launch and having a reputation for using their userbase as beta testers. Plus they have a rep for shutting stuff down after letting it languish, and I think a lot of people think that's what's going ot happen here.

I've thought about getting PlayStation Now but after they pulled Vita support for it, I balked since my Vita is probably where I'd play most of those games.

As I've said elsewhere on here, I don't play games often. But I did try out the PlayStation Now free trial and it works flawlessly. I was very impressed. In fact, it completely changed my opinion on streaming games in general. An all streaming future is a long, LONG way away though. And that comes straight from the horse's mouth. And by "horse", I mean my brother, who works for a video game company called Ubisoft.

For someone like myself, I think PlayStation Now is great. There's over 700 games on there and it only costs €60 per year. So, for the price of one game, you get access to over 700. That's a great deal.
