Flat-Earther Mike Hughes Prepares to Launch Himself 5,000 Feet Into the Air in Another Homemade Rocket

https://www.newsweek.com/flat-earther-mike-hughes-homemade-rocket-1453535

California resident Mike Hughes, 63, made international headlines last year when he reached an altitude of nearly 2,000 feet in another homemade rocket before guiding the vehicle down to a successful—albeit somewhat bumpy—landing.

For his latest daredevil act, Hughes told Newsweek he wants to better his previous achievement. He was speaking ahead of the launch—which is set to take place near the town of Amboy in California's Mojave Desert.

"It's always a lot of anxiety because there's so much work to get done and there is no team here. It is a massive project," Hughes said, describing his feelings ahead of the big day.

Hughes' rocket measures just over 20 feet in length and is powered by "superheated water." It will launch itself off a 34-foot long, almost vertical ramp.

"It will have about 95 to 100 gallons of water in it at this time, superheated," Hughes said. "[This] will leave the rocket at the speed of sound [creating] a 50-foot shockwave behind. A controlled explosion is basically what it is. Water is so powerful it's incredible."

"We're gonna shoot this thing off, it looks like about an 80-degree launch angle. But with me in it, and the weight of the rocket and the water [it] will be around 1,800 pounds at launch time," he said. "This thing has to overcome around 1,800 pounds before it even moves. It will leave the ramp in less than half a second and will hopefully get up to almost a mile in altitude."

Once the rocket has reached this height, Hughes—who drives limos for a living—will deploy the vehicle's parachutes, if all goes to plan, and guide himself back down to Earth.

why would one go straight up to see a flat thing???

if it's flat it's two dimentional...

why not go where one believes the edge is

and shoot the rocket side ways so they can see the top and bottom....

and what make him think that 5000 feet is enough...

he shoulda paid enough to go up for days,

“do you think he will finally prove the Earth is flat?”

No, because it isn’t. Do you think he will?

If he thinks he can prove the earth is flat by going up 5000ft, presumably he thinks that everyone whose been on a plane and travelled at 39,000 ft is now in on the conspiracy! Plus anyone who climbs mountains. 500 a year succeed at Everest and that’s 29000 ft.

Noted flat Earth conspiracy advocate Mike Hughes is planning to shoot himself up 1,500 metres in a self-made rocket on Sunday, the web outlet Space.com reports. He hopes his machine will hit speeds of about 640 kilometres per hour. The rocket launch will be performed in California’s Mojave Desert.

this is why we haven't heard what happened to mr. hughes

https://www.space.com/craigslist-water-heater-mad-rocket-launch.html

'Mad' Flat-Earther's Steam Rocket Launch Grounded by Bad Water Heater Bought on Craigslist

"Mad" Mike will try again this weekend.

Flat-Earth proponent, former limo driver and amateur rocketeer "Mad" Mike Hughes planned...5,000 feet (1,500 meters) into the air above the community of Amboy in California's Mojave Desert Monday (Aug. 12). But his homemade, steam-powered rocket never got off the ground, thanks to a faulty water heater that he bought off of Craigslist.

The launch is currently postponed until possibly Saturday, Aug. 17.

According to Hughes' publicist Darren Shuster, the faulty heater that Hughes bought for $325 off of Craigslist wasn't able to heat the water to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius), the temperature required to create the steam to propel the rocket. Hughes paid $50 for the nose cone of the rocket, which he plans to launch off the back of a semi truck he was gifted. Shuster added that no one knows where the nose cone came from or what its original intent was, but Hughes modified it for its current purpose on the rocket. The launch is sponsored by hud, a casual dating app.

"I appreciate the support, love and excitement from everybody, and a delay will not stop my mission — the rocket is in place and needs a leak plugged up, so weekend is a go," Hughes told Space.com.

From the article - "But proving or disproving the Earth's 100% verifiable roundness is not the goal of this stunt, anyway. As Hughes has said before, he will need to soar past the Kármán line — that contested boundary where the sky ends and space begins, roughly 62 miles (100 kilometers) over Earth — to personally see our apparently latke-shaped planet from space with his own eyes. To do that, Hughes told the Associated Press last year, he wants to build a "Rockoon," or rocket/gas-balloon-hybrid, which he can use to float high into the atmosphere before lighting the rocket's fuse and blasting up even farther. This Sunday's event puts him one small step closer to that ambition."

But he still has one giant leap before he makes it to space!

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I just read the text below. For some reason, I think it belongs here:

Why is 12:30 AM the middle of the night and not lunchtime? It’s nonsense.

For example:

An event happens today at 12:45 PM, something else happens at 10:45 PM, yet the second one happened after the first one even though its a smaller number. This is dumb.

I propose the AM/PM shift at 12:59 to 1:00 rather than the current 11:59 to 12:00. Why has it not always been this way?
