I'm totally a fan of the movies.
But the trailer didn't really catch my interest.
Maybe on time when a fuller trailer is released

But the plus side, James Cameron!

This could go either way. Everything from Terminator 3 onwards has been an insult to the original movies but Dark Fate has James Cameron on board.

The trailer isn't great but I don't think that's necessarily a reflection on the movie. I mean, it does show some cool stuff. The new villainous Terminator is like a T800 with a T1000 wrapped around it so it's essentially two Terminators for the price of one.
The "guardian" role this time isn't a Terminator or a regular human. She's an enhanced super soldier, which makes sense. If John Connor and the Resistance are up against an army of machines, it's only natural that they'd experiment with that kind of thing.
Also, Sarah Connor is back, so that's good.
The airplane part of the trailer looks like it could be fun too.
Plus, and best of all, Arnie is back. And even in the shit Terminator movies, he was always watchable.

I think many people will find it difficult to just ignore those other sequels that have now become irrelevant. Some reviews wonder how they are going to explain that the old T800 (Arnold) has aged but I think that has already been sufficiently explained in Terminator Genesys, even though that movie´s storyline is now totally irrelevant but they could just adopt that explanation and use it in this film, too.

The trailer looks a bit cheap for a Terminator movie but all in all it´s good to see Linda Hamilton and Arnold together again.

Not sure if this is going to be a big blockbuster hit.

With technology so much better why do the effects look worse? I would say it has to do with being freed from the merely technical, to needing more sophisticated artists. The technology is there, but the sophistication needed to produce believable effects is lacking.

sadly CGI on so many modern movies just looks unrealistic, cringeworthy and awful, there are just a few exceptions

There is nuance, friction, gravity, light, opacity and all the other things we take for granted that are seemingly not taken into consideration. The early CGI used it sparingly taking into account all the limitations of the medium. On modern films like this trailer, they linger and even go slow-motion giving us too much time to see how off it is.

They've already said that a younger looking Arnie-model terminator will be in the movie so my guess is that he'll be playing two seperate characters. One is the younger looking terminator and the other is an older human soldier who's likeness was used as the basis for the terminators.

Seems like they´re reusing some ideas from that Genesys movie where they also used a younger Arnold/Terminator.

They had a younger Arnie in Salvation as well. I suppose it makes sense. Why would Skynet send an aged model back in time?

Yup, that was a great show. My son was especially disappointed that it was discontinues...and so was I. Hope the new movie is good. Totally loved the first two Terminator movies...especially the second one.

There doesn't seem to be any "Terminator universe" at this point. The only movies which are considered canon are the first two. But I really liked the first season of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I never got around to the second season because once it got cancelled I didn't see the point.

Well it was good and if you like the band Garbage you have Shirley Manson in it, who was not bad as an actress. I said terminator universe because I know they usually ignore TV shows story lines or they ignore all the bad sequels stories lines as well, like how the last Halloween movie did.

How is that possible if the whole show and the sequels to Terminator 1 and 2 are all based on the storyline and therefore universe of parts 1 and 2?

Isn´t it all part of the canon?

Or do you think that the TV show and Genesys and Salvation stray too far from the first two parts? I mean, they are all based on the same background story, aren´t they?

James Cameron himself has said that Terminator Dark Fate is a follow up to his two Terminator movies and that everything else is being ignored as if they never happened. It's not a case of them straying too far from the originals, it's just they no longer exist in the official Terminator continuity. Well, according to James Cameron anyway. But seeing as this is his creation, I'd tend to just follow whatever he says.

It would be like George Lucas getting back the rights to Star Wars and making his own Episodes 7-9 and pretending that the recent movies never happened.

Ahhh, that´s how you meant it...I see. Makes sense.

I didn´t get it at first because technically, the TV show and all sequels I mentioned above are part of the canon UNTIL this new one is released, or rather....they WERE part of the canon until Cameron´s statement.

.

It´s getting a bit on my nerves....all these reboots, remakes, reimaginings in films. I understand updating a character´s story, or giving it a new try with a new director and actor as happened with Spiderman and the three different versions (and that complicated rights issue with Marvel and Sony etc. etc., which just complicated matters in the Marvel Universe), but it is a bit tiresome, really.

And it´s the same in the music world. We get an album, then we get a deluxe version with more songs, then the remaster, then the super duper deluxe anniversary edition and so on. I think in the long run it kind of cheapens the product, or rather....it makes the original album obsolete.

.

As far as movies go, for me it started with Spiderman, then went on with Conan the Barbarian and continued and took the cake with Mad Max Fury Road. Not a bad movie per se but felt as if George Miller couldn´t be arsed to care enough about his own creation and characters and then used lame and lazy explanations for the timeline of his character and story.

I see what you mean. I'd probably give Cameron a pass here though. I mean, he had nothing to do with those other Terminator movies so if he wants to go back and do another movie to follow on from his last one, he should be able to do that if he wants to. It's not his fault the that the previous movies were shit.

As for remakes and reboots in general, I don't have much of an issue with them. Just so long as they're worth doing. For example, that last Robocop movie was a massive mistake from the very beginning. Their biggest motivation for doing it was to turn Robocop into some kind of superhero franchise. There was no thought put into its story or respect shown to the original. So it was no surprise that it failed. But the flip side of that is the upcoming Robocop Returns. It's a movie set in the original's continuity, made by a director who says he will go out of his way to ensure it lives up to the original, they have no interest in dumbing it down for modern audiences and it will be very adult in nature, just like the original was. Two remakes/reboots of the same movie, yet handled completely differently. Same can be said of that god awful ghostbusters movie and the upcoming Ghostbusters 3. The Paul Feig version was doomed from the beginning but the new one looks like it might actually be good. Hopefully mistakes have been learned from and Ghostbusters 3/Robocop Returns/Terminator Dark Fate will turn out to be good.

I'm looking forward to this movie, but casting a Jason Biggs lookalike to be the new sinister terminator was a mistake.

The "Jason Biggs" lookalike plays Ghost Rider in Agents Of Shield. He's pretty good. He's not that big of a star but neither was Arnie when the original came out. From what little I've seen of him, I think he could be really good in this movie. Depending on what the script is like, of course.

Not blown away by the trailer, nothing we haven't seen elsewhere before. And its a bit confusing where this sits in the story. Are we supposed to assume Terminator 3 never happened then? They could have at least given it a title which helps explain where it sits in the canon.

James Cameron has already said that this is a follow up to his Terminator movies. Everything from T3 onwards is no longer canon.

Thanks, I didn't know that about him. He just doesn't seem to be sinister enough, he reminds me more of a college frat boy than a coldblooded killer.

Good old Robert Patrick. It would have been great to see him have a little cameo in the new movie.

I completely agree! They brought back Drago for Creed II, and it was awesome.
